Well, Ann really opens up a can of leaky, dribbling worms in this video. She is in search of constructing the perfect pouring pot. After doing research and gathering tips from the worlds most renowned pouring vessel experts, she constructs several pieces and then tests them for pouring effectiveness. Ann shares 5 1/2 tips and demonstrates how she constructed the pieces. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say, this video will most likely change our lives on earth.
POST PRODUCTION NOTE: We did find that after further testing, the first piece Ann made PASSED the no-drip test several times. So, the answer to the question on the thumbnail is...yes Virginia, there IS such a thing as a dripless pourer.

Answers to questions we get all the time:
We typically bisque to Cone 04 and fire to Cone 5-6
Ann typically uses Standard English Porcelain no. 365 unless specified otherwise in the video

*****Thanks for watching everybody. One note....Making a good pouring pot was more controllable , but the problem with the dripping at the end of the pour was most difficult to avoid. We showed you the little drips on each pot, but in reality the pots didnt always drip. Factors that made them drip may be a combination of lots of not always controllable variables ....in addition to the design of the piece and the specifics of the spout, things to consider are the type of glaze you use, the viscosity of the liquid you are pouring, the angle at which you are pouring, shaky hands, and even whether the outside of the pot is wet (causing a capillary reaction where the water will latch onto the other droplets and drip out) and probably even more. My guess is that this is one reason, you wont find a lot of information on this subject out there 🙂. Cheers!

Hmm, how to overcome the drip is something the research team should investigate - tableware should be functional...

@@edelgyn2699 Hey Ed. You are so right. We here at the Little Street Pottery Research Facility are on it! We have had several suggestions from perhaps after glazing the piece to wipe away some of the glaze under the sharp spouted edge. Someone said she heard to put a little vegetable oil under the lip to repel the water from dripping, experiment with different glazes rather than the thick white glaze i used etc. Truly it is not one that has a magic answer...a one size fits all as there is so many variables

Your artwork gives each of your pieces such a whimsical happy vibe. Fun video & exploration of an interesting conundrum. This led me to wondering what the most practical and comfortable lip on a coffee mug would be. 🤔 Thank you for making my Saturday so much more interesting! 💜

Thanks so much. Im glad you are enjoying the videos. As far as making the lip of a mug comfortable, you are right that that is a definite consideration for functional pottery, but I think as most things, everyone has their own preferences. What is comfortable to one person may not be to another, right

These are all so beautiful and give me so many ideas. I too have trouble with drippy spouts. I was recently talking to my pottery instructor and she said that people think they need a sharp edge to cut the liquid off but you really need a small, hardly noticeable ridge of clay on the inside edge of the spout. It's so small that it won't impede liquid from going over it but it should cut that last drop off and encourage it to drip down the inside rather than the outside. I haven't tried it yet but if you do, I hope we get to see.

I love that Michele!! Great minds think alike, right. I wish you could tell me what you are thinking for the upcoming videos, haha. Coming up with fresh ideas is one of the hardest parts to making these complicated videos. The other is getting the sample pieces done in time as people like to see the finished work, you know what i mean :-)

Leave a thicker rim on the top of the cylinder and then with two fingers pull upwards to thin one area of the rim into a half circle upwards. Then put two fingers on either side and rub the half circle downwards towards your fingers to make the spout. This way, the spout is much thinner and will pour better. If you tilt the rim downwards just a touch, this should prevent the last drip. The spout of a tea pot can be cut so that the top of the spout is perpendicular to the rim of the pot. Then with a wet finger, the lower part of the spout can be thinned out and tilted just a touch downwards to improve pouring and prevent dripping, bearing in mind that with porcelain clay it may be necessary to do this at "ten to two" because the spout may turn during baking due to clay memory.

Ann, I was taught to make the "spout" edge sharp to eliminate the dripping. When the glaze is applied, it softens that sharp edge, even if the glaze breaks at that point. It's been a while since I made a pouring vessel, but the gravy vessel I made at that time has never dribbled. To control the gurgling, Clary Illian's book (A Potter's Workbook) suggests that you need a more open neck, like the one you made with the beautiful floral images, to stop that gushing. One question -- do you always throw wearing your wedding rings? How do you do that? Even without a diamond, I'd be gouging the clay with my ring. And one of my instructors had to replace his wedding ring because the clay wore it down to nothing. 😊

@@catherineschutz3588 that is perfect Catherine!! I really appreciate it and am looking for any tips that you have. I think you are right about the glaze softening the sharp edge. I also think that the viscosity of the liquid you re pouring out has something to do with it too. In the video we were using a coffee as the darker color looked better on film than just water. That dripped, but after filming, I tested the pots again with regular water. Some still dripped, but several of them didnt. I might be wrong but I do think there is a lot more variables than the pot and spout like shaky hands or the angle at which the piece is being tipped etc. ...just a guess.

Well, you got me curious, and as it happens, I inherited my mother's huge mid century pottery collection, so I pulled out and tested one of each of everything that had a pour spout, and, to one degree or another, they all let a drip cross the finish line after the race had ended, with the exception of a limited edition square Gladding McBean creamer. Fiesta pitchers were the worst, with Hall in the middle, and Gladding McBean generally not as bad of leakers as the others. So the answer is not some secret lost to the past. In fact, I also tested every Pyrex measuring cup I own, and none of them dripped, dribbled, or even held onto a hovering droplet. Notably, the spout on the one GMcB creamer is very close in shape and thickness to the Pyrex spouts, so I would say that if we want to create functional spouts, we should all be looking to our Pyrex for answers and guidance. The Pyrex spouts are narrow, and they do almost come to a point (as another person suggested might be key), but what stands out about them even more is that the glass at the spout is very thin--much thinner than the rest of the vessel. I think it must be the combination of the pointyish shape and the thinness of the material that makes the winning combo. FWIW, I Googled the thin spout theory, and at least one site suggested that the thinness offers better flow control, so that might be the reason they work better. Thanks again for all of your great videos! --Leha

I've discovered that if you put a small ball of clay right in the middle of mouth of the spout, works really well catching that last drop of liquid.

Hey!! Great to hear from you. You are right. That is another consideration to think about. Closes spouts always have those issues but potters still make the snakelike spouts. My guess is that it is difficult to prove that they are stained on the inside unless you break them opened, haha.

Thanks for the video! I love that you let us see your process of testing! Do you think if after you glazed it you thinned the glaze right at the pouring edge or even removed it right there would help with the drip at the end? I want to try this and see what I find. Thanks again for all your work!

Great instructions. I have the same drip problem but I find that I really need to reestablish the sharp edge of the lip after I apply the glaze. That seems to help and it does not impact the look of the piece. I go back and be sure the sharp edge is parallel to the table.
