Hi Craig. If you use dehydrated meals write the required amount of water and the recommended cooking time on the outside of the packet in large lettering using permanent marker. Easy to read for tired eyes and minds. Kind Regards, T

#5: Try out any new gear at home, before you have to use it in the field. Keep up the great work!

Great job. Thank you. My tip - get in the habit of packing things the same way so that in the field you know automatically where stuff is. Simples, I know!! May I trouble you to share your kit for wild camping. In particular, what is the half-zip base layer you are wearing? Looks ideal!

Another nice short one Craig, I have a system of drybags of different colours, this allows me to find kit that I want at first glance into a rucksack or on a hanging line, another one is put your toilet kit ( toilet paper, wet wipes, hand sanitiser, lighter) in the brightest bag you can find, it's the one you'll want to find the fastest 😀😀👍

Hi Craig, My tip would be: Get you kit squared away as soon you get home. Get you boots rinsed off and and set aside to dry. Get your wet gear hug out. Wash up your eating kit etc. Then RELAX. There's nothing worse than getting up in the morning and having to deal with wet stinking kit. This also maintains your equipment well and makes packing for the next outing easier. All the best, Tony

Hi Craig, I have to agree with several others here and suggest that you always check everything carefully before taking it in the field. Great tips! Take care and all the best from California 💛

My 5th tip would be a piece of advice you gave in another video, check over all of your kit before heading out and make sure nothing is ripped or frayed and all your zippers work. Sharpen your axe and knife. Make sure your kit is generally in top shape.

Bright bags of different sizes/colours helps me keep organised. For my camping purposes, I categorise gear. Tent, bed, quilt. Then food, kitchen, personal (toiletries/first aid), electronics, fixings, entertainment, clothes. I’ve recently added a fire bag for campfires. I can adjust what’s in these bags according to the trip. A baby pillowcase makes a stuffsack/pillow. I only car camp but plan to try backpacking. I’ll have to reduce the gear!

As part of your research check if campfires are allowed, if yes they tend to be dependent on the latest forest fire risk (check that too). This has an obvious impact to what kitchen kit you need to bring and minimize the risk you put on your local environment.

Good points there Craig! My number 5: Check in on how you are feeling. Physically and Mentally. You may have all these wonderful plans set out for the day, but need to be honest with yourself whether they are still viable given how you are. Do they need to change? Or, does how your feeling mean it is even more important that you DO go out? Also, it's good to measure this before you go and then again when you get back - knowing whether what you have done has had a positive (or negative) impact on either will help for planning and motivation for your next excursion. Number 5.5 - Pack ALL the chocolate!

Time I tried one of these dydrated meals. Safer at home. I've always cooked on a parafin Primy, steak, onions and tattie fritters for Saturday evenings, mixed anything soups with par-boiled tatties, mince or sausages and mash, pastas, fried dumplin in winter (nuthin' better) and a beer (cooled in the stream) to watch the sunset. Ach I think I'll try all these at home 'fore I go on the hill. Spiritual man spiritual! Another clear, concise and useful vid. McIntyre. Scotland.

My 5th tip is to load up on slow carbs the day before a trip, like a meal with lots of pasta. This gives you energy the day after so you don't need much fast carbs when doing anything strenuous.

You're awesome! What you cover is so important. I'm an amateur radio operator and have a handheld (walkie-talkie) I carry with me and can contact people at any point of my trek here in the N. Cascades. If anything happens, I have a tool to contact folks outside the catastrophic event (God forbid). Checklist... awesome idea. I really need to make one of these rather than rely on repetition and experience - I have forgotten things and this would nix that for sure (I've actually done that; beat my pack up and I was laughing the whole time 😂 watching that). I'd like to comment on the other two points, but no need. You're the first I've seen to aggregate these important points and you are obviously on top of your game. Probably one of the most important vids on wild camping/hiking/day hiking. Thanks so much! #5: Weather.

Hi David, apologies that he's taking me so long to respond to your comment. Thank you for your kind words and I'm very pleased that you found elements of the video useful. How are you getting on with your use of a kit checklist??
@davidvaughn7752

@@TheBushcraftPadawan Hi! The checklist has made life easier and have incorporated one successfully. I have two, actually... one for when I return from my outing and prep my pack and clean my gear and re-aggragate for the next trip, (which is when I use it, since my sleeping bag, food, water and hard copy chart/itinerary, are the only things that go in my pack just before I leave) and a second one that is sort of a running list of ideas, thoughts, and of things I might need to improve my kit/life while I'm actually out in the field as I have found myself pondering "what was that I thought of that would have been so great to have" after some time has passed after a trip... I keep a small notepad and pencil in my packs hip moly-pouch for this. Thanks for sharing such a great tip and the prudent will incorporate this easy and useful thing... although being a professional pilot by trade certainly has something to do with appreciating the value of checklists! (Sorry to ramble on 😄)

All good advice, the checklist in particular I will have to implement, my memory is terrible. About the only tip I have is to have a compact/basic kit that you carry for most outing's regardless of duration, like an expanded EDC kit, the point being flexibility, it's better to have something than nothing.

I notice you use a Sunto watch, what would you recommend in that department, thinking of the altimeter mainly.
@TheBushcraftPadawan
@TheBushcraftPadawan 2 жыл бұрын
I've had a Suunto Vector for about 10 years and it's still going strong whereas my Suunto Core packed up after ~3 years. Both of them provided good altimeters in terms of accuracy, so it's worth looking at what you want in terms of altitude increments, recording, altitude alarm etc.
