Why I'm Going To Carry On Breaking The Law
In this video I provide my own insights and perspectives on the recent and overt attempts by landowners and National Park authorities to clamp down on wild campers.... or is it fly campers.... or is it both?
I also explain why, despite knowing that what I'm doing is "wrong", I'm going to carry on breaking the law (kind've).

What amazes me is people's acceptance that a single person can withhold access to huge swathes of wild and otherwise unused land. Is it because they have a piece of paper saying they "own" it? Surely these vast beautiful pieces of land should be managed by the people, not a single member of the aristocracy?
@brianthesnail3815
@brianthesnail3815 2 жыл бұрын
They own it. You don't. The number of people who seem to think they have a right to use other people's land when they never would accept anybody invading their own property is breath taking. They own a house in a town and would go mental if someone parked or camped on their drive. Also please remember the natural landscape you enjoy isn't actually 'natural' in the UK. Take the Yorkshire Dales. Every inch of it was created by farmers herding sheep. Without them, the landscape would not exist. It would be covered in trees. You couldn't walk through it because it would be covered in gorse and ash trees.

@@brianthesnail3815Private property such as farms, homes and businesses are not the places i'm talking about. I'm talking about the 100,000s of acres of unused land that is being horded by the minority. This land is only "owned" because a a system that has been designed by these very same land-owners. Having an ancestor who took control of some land 300 years ago by force doesn't sound like a legitimate claim of possession. As for the landscape... you are very correct. It would be very different if not under control of the current owners. These landowners get huge agricultural grants if they keep the areas clear and "available" for agriculture. Ever wondered why there are a few sheep just scattered around every hillside? They're not being farmed, they're there to keep the vegetation down just enough to make the land suitable for the grant.

I wrote to my MP about this. I had a phone call from him assuring me that it was the fly camping and other types at low level that are the target. I also met up with a lake district national park ranger and discussed it. Please see the interview on my channel. I was reassured on both counts.

Craig you have voiced all of my concerns. I am looking forward to getting back out there again and that will not change. I wild camp on my own as a rule. I leave no trace. Fly campers are the devils spawn as far as I am concerned. I am aware of a you tube post where someone has been moved on. I hope that this settles down but I am concerned about the new law that is going to make it illegal will be used at the convenience of central government whom I no longer have any faith in.

I completely agree on all the points that you have made, there should be some level of discretion when it applies to experienced and responsible wild campers. Most if not everyone who responsibility wild camps tends to have equipment that far exceed a tesco tent, sleeping bag, sleep mat ect... on most cases I would argue that something as simple as a sleeping bag, or mat has cost more than the total cost these "fly campers" have spent on their whole setup. Is it time to implement a system similar to that anglers have, with the need for licensing at a national level? Licensing would have the potential of creating an additional cash flow to the popular areas (Snowdonia, Lake District, Peak District, ect...), the land owners are also neglecting the free labour that often is provided by the responsible campers that carry more than their own rubbish out.

In Scotland it's completely legal to wild camp with guide lines, I'd post the website link but YT doesn't like that for some reason. There's certain popular areas unfortunately that have bye-laws and or permits etc.

If it is illegal there will be a lot of KZfaq channels I follow in trouble. So many are landscape and astrophotographers. They wild camp while looking for the sunsets, stars, and sunrises.

I am lucky to have the Scottish outdoor access code and can camp pretty much anywhere that isn't enclosed land. I also believe wholeheartedly in the leave no trace rule. Often though, I come across abandoned campsites with all the gear and litter left behind. After a rant to the wind and trees, it gets cleaned up and left the way it should be. Perhaps a compromise could be reached where wild campers pay a couple of quid for a permit, where the rangers then have details of the person who leaves a mess behind. There are current laws to prosecute flipping etc. In today's life of mad rushing about and stress.filled lives,.camping is an important part of taking care of mental health and should be available to all.
@TheBushcraftPadawan
@TheBushcraftPadawan 2 жыл бұрын
I like your idea Colin, but I suspect that those who are causing the problems would be exactly the time of people who would pay for the permit in the first place - so no ability to trace them etc.

As there are no "opening " or "closing" times on national parks what is wrong with "sheltering out of the weather"; maybe overnight; or do you have to be awake, if your asleep is it "camping" not "sheltering"?

We must always remember these places are (National Parks)....set out and fought for by our ancestors....so that the future Nation-Generations could enjoy them....if we do it in a responsible way there should be no issues at all be you wild camper or hiker ect ect ect....people need these wild places for there well being and mental health.... to restrict access and put up barriers and offputting signage to these place's is the very act of tyranny itself and is a crime against humanity itself....it should be stamped out immediately !

I had the situation, a few years ago, where i had only just got out of my car with all my gear in the peak district where a park ranger did exactly that he came over and said "its obvious what you are doing here, and i should tell you that you're not aloud to do it, but i know your not going to leave a mess or burn the place down are you." and think that's all that needs said. even if some does have a problem with us camping then a polite request to leave, then you pack up and go. They can tell the difference between us wild camper/ hikers and the 'others'

+BA Survival Hi Ben and thanks for dropping by, I hope you're keeping well? It sounds like you met one of the more level-headed rangers that are out there, nice one! I found out on Friday that Snowdonia only has 5 or 6 wardens, some I'm fairly confident that I can continue evading them for the time being 👀

The problem is the "fly campers" are unlikely to get the message they are not welcome because they are unlikely to read the KZfaq websites such as this as they have no interest the same as the rest of us! So we have to find some way of getting their attention by other means... That would be like catching them and prosecuting them with a very large fine or imprisonment! And showning it on MSM!

Rangers should have to use discretion i suppose, some of us will be undergoing long distance, multi-day hikes, and where else are we going to camp overnight when it would be potentially dangerous to continue hiking after dark?. A lot to consider. Thanks pal, i love your content.

Hey Donald, hope you're keeping well? As I mentioned at the outset of the video Scotland does indeed have it's own laws in this area (as does Dartmoor) but it's a hell of a long way to go when I've got Snowdonia on my doorstep - having said that I am considering an outdoors project in early Spring 2022 that will take me up that way 👍

You CAN legally wild camp on a Dartmoor so long as its in the designated areas as shown on the Dartmoor National Park website. It's a very large area but still sadly abused by the idiotic minority.

@@TheBushcraftPadawan thank you, now subscribed. Yes sadly there is a consultation process on going at the moment. Thankfully on the whole wild campers shouldn't be affected too much. They are trying to make tents no more than 2 man, doing away with tarps and hammocks altogether, zero campervans parking overnight anywhere, and some other stuff that won't effect wild campers at all. They are also taking back small amounts of already allowed camp land. I can see their thought process but its never going to work, they can't enforce the powers with so called flycampers as it is. Its all going crazy, just as I'm getting into the hobby!
