I became a better listener when I got out of my head and stayed in the moment and also was not stressing that I should always have something to follow up with or participate in every conversation.

5 points to note; 1. Not paying attention: It is easy to get distracted by other things (sometimes under the guise of multitasking) as you’re having a conversation. However, it takes your attention away from what the other person is saying. The more stimuli around to distract a person such as cell phones or a nearby television-the less likely they are to actively listen to the person speaking. 2. Interjecting with a personal anecdote: It may seem helpful to sympathize or relate to the speaker by offering your own experience. However, this habit can make the speaker feel like you’re not fully respecting their story and simply want to turn the attention to yourself. 3. Judging the speaker: Some people tune out or get defensive if someone shares an opinion they disagree with. The listener may shut down and refuse to relate, which prevents a potentially meaningful conversation. 4. Not asking questions: Not asking follow-up questions about the speaker’s story can indicate poor listening skills. Asking questions shows engagement and curiosity and makes the other person feel heard. 5. Talking over the speaker: Good listeners rarely cut someone else off to comment with their own opinion. It can send a message that your thoughts are more important than theirs. A silence or momentary pause is not always a reason to insert your own story, rebuttal, or belief. 6. Waiting to talk: Formulating a response while the speaker is talking results in distracted listening. If you appear more interested in telling your own story than listening, it can degrade your personal and professional relationships. The other person may not feel heard, making them less inclined to have conversations with you in the future.

Listening with the eyes, makes such a big difference. I always notice people'e presence through whether they are making eye contact with me or not!

I really like the question, "what question did a I fail to ask here to understand your reality?" It reminds me that I may not always be tuned into them and focused on their perspective.

I continue to improve as a listener using the following two principles: 1. I keep reminding myself how I have personally felt when the other person was quite obviously not giving me their full attention, and I've been narrating what I felt was important to me. 2. I remind myself of the high impact conversations and coaching sessions I've had with those I work with, where I've been able to highlight THEIR successes simply by "listening" to what they were saying; successes they were not even cognizant of conveying in their narrative...and the resulting shine in their eyes and lift in their shoulders when I've been able to do so. There is little that is as gratifying as knowing you have had such an impact on another human being!

I get excited and blabber. So I’ll try opening my conversations with “what’s on your mind today?” And “ how did it go?”

This is so important! I feel like modern technology has so many of us more and more distracted by the day. I agree with doing some of your own research and truly caring & understanding the other person in order to carry out meaningful conversation. Loved the video and also love your presence as well! Fantastic video on listening! Loved hearing your perspective on this as a journalist. I have a background in psychotherapy, so I was trained to be a listener. And, with that being said, there were things you mentioned here that I hadn't thought about before. So, that was cool. With the last point of taking notes, I know that stat is true, however, I'm a horrible listener when it comes to taking notes. I usually retain more if I have my eyes focused on the person the whole time and take notes shortly after. Different strokes for different folks!

My favorite tip was, "how over preparing will give you confidence, but stepping into their uncertainty by listening & improvising will give you CONNECTION." That was amazing. Second biggest take away for all of us to practice is to not try to fix, give advice or interrupt. Something I will always have to consciously work on.
