Adept at logical calculations and anything that doesn't have to do with emotions, the INTP is that quirky friend that always seems to know what's going to happen next.
Here's 5 common traits you can use to spot an INTP instantly.

Most INTPs play dumb to be social. It is easy to point out all the logical inconsistencies socially. Ideally we should use this to play with a situation. Humour is prominent with INTP and almost a prominent form of engaging socially positively, if not we become reserved and cautious of expressing ourselves, as it can feel too unusual.

Interesting, so that explains why INTPs always take things playfully What causes INTP to be humorless?

@@brianon4049 Hmm possibly too much social etiquette and structure, but I think it is easy to think a lot about others and then social anxiety can kick in. It seems to happen personally if there is a social expectation of emotions I guess, it is not that we don't feel it in that moment, but that is when our thinking side kicks in the most to control us unfortunately, so I either just mimck expectation or avoid. Using my imagination and rolling with it and not caring about my quirks/gestures and random characters and situations I create is when I am at my best. ENTP in disguise! Nice video by the way ;) it is tho

We moved around a lot when I was a kid (due to parents employment) and I always found it hard to fit in. I would often hold back, in class at school, if the teacher asked questions, as I didn't want to be the 'new kid', and some kind of show off. I would pretend not to know something, just so I wouldn't draw attention to myself. On the other hand, I would tell jokes (often sarcastic), or get up to mischief, in order to get noticed in other ways.

My experience with INTPs is that they understand social cues (usually better than I do as an INFP), they just don't like them. There's this ideal with IXXPs that the idea is the most important, and if other's don't like or can't understand how we express it, that is their problem. It's not until later in life that we realize that if we want to accomplish anything, we have to get others on board, which means learning to use the dreaded fourth function in a more mature way. On an unrelated safety note: It's important to change your smoke detector battery on a regular basis.

This sounds like a way to spot young or immature INTPs. But you seem to have missed one key part of the INTP type. They learn and do so quickly. So while they might not understand why mentioning that the cake was dry caused a problem they will take it in and are unlikely to commit the same error a second time. As INTPs mature they learn how social interactions are meant to operate, and can also spot emotional cues. With enough data all of this simply becomes another logic puzzle. While they enjoy the puzzle element they don't enjoy the emotional interaction. But being able to navigate it can ease the discomfort and also allow them to slide through social events with minimal disruption. Knowing how Intuitives process information helps to understand why INTPs seem to be so knowledgeable and why they can spot things that others miss. If you think of the information as waves of data being sent to you. There's too much to catch it so there's two ways to deal with it. 1 (the most common way) is to filter out as it comes in, just keeping hold of the relevant or immediately useful data - this is how Sensing types work. The second is to let as much data in as possible without sorting and then your brain can sort it out at leisure. This is why Intuitives will randomly come up with connections, solutions, or insights seemingly out of the blue. It's not intuition as the dictionary defines it, but it's looks that way from the outside. It's that the brain has been sorting and cross referencing information all day and had just reached a relevant piece that connects with something else.
@brianon4049

That is an interesting perspective - I do often encounter situations of subconscious insights, but I never thought it could be due to the brain processing things on it's own More research needs to be done on how wonderful the human body can be :o

Older INTP here, and i habe to agree. I mean, i still suck at social interactions, but ive found that when i can actually turn my emotions off and approach a social interaction like a flow chart (specifically when talking to women). I find moderate success. Problem is turning my brain off and getting the hell out my own way, because for some reason it still boggles my mind that humans can be so predictable.

I get what you’re getting at with the calculative tasks…but I think isn’t necessarily “math” more that math is entirely logic based with a defined set of parameters. I would say a better giveaway would be something along the lines of “INTPs constantly attempt to understand and then improve systems OR alternatively go into problem solve mode.” For example when playing a video game, my ENFP friend will laud the graphics and depth of characters and I’ll be like pointing out how they could have laid out the inventory system, pointing out inefficiencies in the weapon building, loopholes in the plot, why I should be able to jump to said ledge based on the game physics etc. I notice the good stuff but tend to focus on the things that could change to make it better. This gets us into trouble all the time because then we don’t necessarily follow the traditional/set way of doing things…at work, at school, at home. I’m good in math, but that’s also the class I got my only ‘B’ grade because I would solve things in a different way than what the teacher or book described or I would think it is dumb and a waste of time to show my work for certain calculations. A lot of people call it being contrary and stubborn but most of the time it’s just us trying to figure out if there is a better (more efficient, or more logical) way. Add to this the absolute hatred of being controlled and conforming and I can understand why some actions seem chaotic and contrary. The worst thing my parents could say when trying to get me to do something would be, “because I said so.” Ps Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner is who I always point to as an example. Enjoyed the vid!

As an INTP, I think your missing the fact of age. Because we study and observe people all the time, and listen to people life situations, and reactions, we learn when, where, and how to react. Yes, I know how to fix your problem, but I see you’re not ready to hear it, so I will just listen. Or, I know how to help you, but I’m going to stop and pick my words carefully, so I don’t hurt your feelings. I feel like these tools come with age, knowledge, observing peoples reactions, and mistakes made in the past. I also have been told by people, that they value and appreciate the truth and bluntness, of my personality, because they know I won’t beat around the bush, and tell them what they want to hear, but a true and honest answer. Yes everything you said is true, but we are smart enough to be kind, and loving. And as a female INTP, I hug and kiss my children in public situations, and don’t cringe, and feel awkward, and now that my children are adults, I still hug and kiss them in public, hold their hands when walking, and give them a kiss. I think that INTP people, are very emotional and have huge hearts, that’s why we are so hard to get to know, we protect ourselves, and don’t let that many people in, because we see the hurt, pain, and drama, that is out there. So we are very careful, and choose wisely, who we allow to get close to hearts, but once they’re in, it’s for life, and we will move heaven and earth for them.

I don’t think INTPs are mean; they’re blunt. There’s a difference, and that difference is intent. INFJs, especially mature ones, are also very blunt, but we do sugar coat things a lot more than INTPs. What’s really shocking is encountering a female INTP. I think this is where the stereotype of the masked female aspie comes from. Younger female INTPs will be very eager to try and fit in, and be like other kids, when they are so different, and by their teens, they tend to not GAF anymore, so the “mask” slips. I would imagine that INTPs are probably the most friendly, social babies, especially if they have a really good, attentive mother, because they copy whatever their mother does.

I think emotions/feelings are the ways the brain deal with things when the brain doesn't have enough thinking power to deal with them. For INTPs, they have enough thinking power, therefore the feeling/emotion part is repressed or goes behind the curtain, so that these departments are not often used.

@@thidasfernando9698 Ah , what you need is time and perspective, and truth, you first put into perspective..and maybe you expect way too much and way too fast for yourself compared to your ideal situation... Everything has to grow, and eventually a seed becomes a plant, and the plant might become a tree if that is what you planted, but never is it said..that the tree will grow straight... Neither is is necessarily that the tree grows straight for its survival, because all it need is to catch the sunlight in order to thrive, and sure maybe the wind might send you into another direction and therefore you cannot grow straight, but eventually it doesn't matter because you will thrive in your own way and find your own way. Trees don't look to each other and judge each other, hey you are crooked... Thats a human thing and more likely a brain thing not necessarily is understood by the human itself. The brain just collects data and compared it to its internal data,most people are not aware of this..but you should... THats why most ppeople are ruled by their brain, but you on the otherhand would be able to rule the brain eventually in some form or be aware of its functioning in REAL TIME.

I agreed with most of the video, but the "INTPs are always good at math/statistics" is inaccurate. Calculations can include collecting other forms of data, not limited to quantitative. I'm an INTP who isn't the best at most forms of math unless you count trigonometry/geometry if you give me the formulas, because that for of math is less abstract. I went into medical anthropology because I want to help people by understanding and applying health care systems concepts - which requires analysis. Perhaps instead of calculation, analysis would have been a better term? I know I'm knit-picking, but that statement didn't apply to me and I know other INTPs who are more versed in other fields that don't involve intense application of algebra. Edit: Also not a huge fan of the "male vs female [insert personality type here]" - gender stereotypes are determined by dominant culture as opposed to individual reflections of how someone might express gender. There are also various societies where the binary male/female isn't the entire picture of what gender is, eg genders that are not binary. I never understood the belief that there is a correlation with gender behavior and personality type - yes both are socially determined, but gender is much more malleable than cognitive functions.
