The factory that supplied the suspension cables for the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco should still have some offcuts lying around too. One would only need to cover these in a layer of electrical isolation material and attach some (smaller) lugs to the ends.

Man, some of the shit he does scares the fuck out of me. I know he's a brilliant dude who's got balls the size of Mexico, but sometimes I think he's doing _insanely unsafe shit_ at times, but then he goes and tells us that you could touch the contacts and you wouldn't even feel it. He's so awesome, lol. EDIT: Also, the power company must _love_ him in that area. I know Dave Jones was saying that sometimes his local power provider gets in touch with him and asks him to drop from his typical 240-250v to 180-200v at the lab, and he somehow does it. I don't know a ton about this stuff, I just think those conversations would be hilarious. "Hello, Mr. Induction? Photonic? What shall I call you? I'll just call you Mr. Pi, okay? Well, I'm calling today because we're having issues in our load balancing and monitoring systems -- our logs show that there have been intermittent spikes in power consumption in your area. At one point, it seems that there were almost 50k amps _at one time_ being pulled at your home. We're thinking it's a mistake but we wanted to double-check." _"Haha, yeah your equipment is spot on: that was me! We needed to make one of those 'round-the-corner' screwdrivers, so we just put a typical screwdriver across a 50k amp transformer I made in my attic and bent it myself. However, I wanted more out of my new toy, so I put a crowbar across the contacts until it was the color of the fucking sun. Crackin' fun, that."_ "Oh, okay. Thanks for, uh... confirming." _"You're welcome boys." ::click:: "...where's my beer got off to?"_

lego scape I've heard it's not the voltage that kills you, but the current. So I'm guessing that with 50k amps flowing through _any_ mind, it'd be toast. But I'm not an engineer, so if I'm wrong, at least I wouldn't be _dead_ wrong in this case =P

***** It scares me because I'm not an electrician nor an engineer, and I know that if I were in his shoes I'd probably be toast right now, as I wouldn't know how to keep the current to a manageable level. Congrats on the sick burn though, I guess. ::shrug:: Also, yes: He's fucking awesome. The guy's brilliant. He does shit with electricity I've never seen anyone do, and he does it all in a controlled manner. The guy's so fucking brilliant that he can literally toy with a force of nature in ways the average person would _fucking die_ doing, yet he manages to come out completely unscathed. So take your pick: His "brilliant"-level intelligence? Awesome. The crazy "experiments" (quotes for you, dad) he does with electricity _simply because he's awed by its power_ and chooses to share those experiences with the rest of us? Awesome. You have a nice day, you adorable little angry bastard.

I remember working on a 15,000 amp variable constant current power supply we built for Westinghouse, they used it to test circuit breakers. It was 3 phase and used hundreds of 2n3771s for the series pass element. We used 2 large aluminum angle irons and a steel shop stool as the load, you just had to have a 200 pound tech sit on the stool to make sure you had contact. That stool had the paint burned off the legs because they glowed dull red at full load.

I use to work for a magnetics company that made custom one off and very small production run transformers. In 1969 when the USS Enterprise CVAN-65 suffered from a fire and numerous munitions explosions we were tasked with supplying several enormous 3 phase transformers. I don't recall the exact specifications. They started with I think 6 ad by the time final test came around all had failed but 1. I do remember we powered that monster very slowly to the test spec and turned it down very quickly. This transformer you made reminded me of that incident nearly 50 years ago.

Get 5000 10 amp diodes, each with a low value (say around 0.01 ohm) current-equalizing resistor in series, and parallel them all to make one 50kA diode. Make it 7 to 10 thousand in parallel for a bit of safety margin. You now have one 50kA diode & can half-wave rectify. Make four like this & you can build a bridge rectifier for full-wave rectified DC. Or maybe you could find some old, huge mercury vapour rectifiers somewhere - old train station, power station, something like that ? Or, go here:- www.darrahelectric.com/metal-finishing-rectifiers.aspx I'm not even going to ask.....

Hmm, diodes in parallel, that was my first thought too. But I think there could be problems ....NTC attributs of diodes.......
@Phillll
@Phillll 10 жыл бұрын
if each diode has a series resistor to give say 0.05 volts drop, give or take, not too critical, at the operating current, the diodes will tend to share the current equally & survive the ordeal, but use more diodes than you think you need :-)

Drop 2 zeros and you have your amp out put. Even with an Ideal "zero" Ω load you wouldnt achieve 50ka with that. The sparks even tell you that. I don't believe you have the saturation to make enough magnetomotive force to induced that kind of current. If you are going to use braid (Litz) wire, I would highly recommend you strip the jacket off that wire, remove as much as you can to the primary coil with out removing the varnish. Then to isolate the pri-sec use wax paper or something similar that will take the heat an be ultra thin. If you got it avalible I would try flat stock or square stock bare copper for the sec. Also noticed you said the coils are running 120, you sound like you may be from a 220/440 region, are you running split phase to it? If so have you verified that each of your 3 coils is phase balanced with each other? You will now when you hit 50ka the tip of that prybar would have exploded when it made contact.

There only 0.5V so it had bad contact with prybar, surface of contact is small it start vaporizing metals, metals oxydizing and made oxide layer which is not conductive enough(for 0.5V). Also he didnt made 50kA in this video, he even said so, but he made transformer for 50kA.

I bet it's still under control because the electricity where he lives is being Charged differently. It's super expensive in the morning, but once it's nighttime, it becomes super cheap. So, with that said, I'm pretty sure that he does most of his experiments during night, where he could be charged very cheaply.

+Jayson Fabregas Thats a popular but im afraid misguided conception. Power is only cheaper at night if you have a dual rate meter ie Economy Seven in UK. Dont know about economy tariffs in europe but even the night rate is not" SUPERCHEAP" I know as i use it for heating and hot water. Its very expensive compared to gas and you have to be careful of your Peak Time consumption as the unit price is much higher than a "normal" 24 hour tariff.

Thanks for the great video. Can you advise on what is the best type of bolts to use for interconnecting the copper bars and terminals? I've been using stainless steel bolts, and also some bronze types with washers, but I've been suggested that there is a better choice and it wasn't too long since I've installed the firsts, what do you suggest? What are the bolts used in your transformer bars made of?

HeadShot360IN Headshot - Are YOU ? At least in my country (& IEC & British Standards), 240 volts ac supply is classified as 'Low Voltage' (which is reassuring to know when you accidentally connect yourself to it :-) So few of you guys UNDERSTAND voltage, current & power. 'High Voltage' is, of course, a relative descriptor & depends on either personal opinion or whose standards you choose, or are required, to adhere to. Same thing for "low amperage" but, especially under fault conditions, you CAN draw a significant current from your 'average' household supply before something (e.g. fuse, breaker etc.) 'gives up' - enough to scare you. Try it !

Philip Chalk I think Headshot was thinking of the street wiring, not the mains wiring. That IS high voltage by anyone's standards at about 4KV most places in the world. But... guys? I can pull 25KVA from my mains on a sustained basis and up to 75KVA in short bursts... and my mains are the common US 100A service (240V split phase so I get 120V for appliances and 240V for water heaters and "cookers", like the stove).
@phil5367
@phil5367 10 жыл бұрын
Joseph Perkins Oh, OK, I guess he was. In my part of the world, power is distributed up the street as 3 phase, 415V star. That comes usually from 11kV 3 phase, which you get in streets too. Your typical consumer end pole transformer here is 11kV 3 phase delta to 415V 3 phase star. And sure, you can pull 25kVA from a decent sized house mains (I'm in a rural area; my switchboard is fed 240V single phase, via 95 mm^2 conductors, from a 25kVA single phase transformer across the road) but look at (a) the size of the wires in & out of his variac & (b) the size of the variac. Neither of them would sustain 25kVA for any length of time.

Sorry, Valueless Dollar, I replied to the whole thread earlier. Think of the current (flow) that is supplied via your grid, essentially limitless, yet your devices will only pull what is required given that voltage potential. Also the mostfet threshold voltage is about 0.5V so it may or may not even trigger the phones circuitry to allow current flow. Now if you used the phones case which has quite a low resistance to short the circuit then it'd cook it :-)

Bit of wishful thinking there. Many years ago in the factory where I did my Electrical apprentice ship we had an Electrician drop a 12 inch spanner across a 1000 amp transformer output terminals. It vaporised the spanner, the explosion blew off his clothes and he died on the way to hospital. Ive seen a real 50,000 amp transformer and its just a little bit bigger than yours.With the air gap around those secondary cables you would be lucky to get 10% efficiency. On real very high amp transformers they use square section secondary cable so they can get the windings close together.Never mind, Its good fun playing around with electricity anyhow.

Some questions: The transformer itself should be safe to touch since voltage is so low right? (electrical pressure being low enough to not have dry skin being conductive relative to it) If the answer to the above question is no, how do we determine exactly how many joules/second can decrease the resistance of a material like skin? It would have to do with the the way the electrical current would heat up the point of contact and all subsequent points as the previous points were stripped of resistance via the heat right?

As a fellow electrician, I was very impressed with your demonstration, however I know you know something about ohms Law, and you MUST know that "it's not the voltage that hurts or kills you, it's the AMPS (current) had you touched both electrodes at the same time, we would have watched you EXPLODE!!! Just be careful in the future mate!!!

Lewis H. "As a fellow electrician..." Jeezus!! This is why electricians scare me!! I'm NOT an electrician - I know physics & electronics. You remind me of my previous business partner, who used to try to impress me by saying "I know Ohm's Law - V=IR...." So I'd say "O.K. your car has 2x 60 watt headlights, how much current do they draw from your battery?" Of course he had no idea... It's like saying "I understand (special) Relativity - E=MC^2" Parroting a three term equation does not imply any kind of understanding of fundamental concepts nor how to APPLY them. Clearly you either DON'T know much about Ohm's Law, or you don't UNDERSTAND it enough to apply it to real world situations. Had he touched both electrodes at the same time he would NOT, OF COURSE have exploded, and I suspect HE knows that, even though YOU DO NOT !

Jasper Dar The impedance of the human body is much lower on the inside. About 2K on average. Your skin can act as a dielectric and protect against higher voltages if dry and intact. But, 1/2 a volt would need electrodes right in the heart, most likely :P 10uA there can be lethal.

Yes, it does take a certain amount of amps to kill, but it also requires voltage to push those amps through the body too. This only gives 0.5v, and so the resistance of the body is too great for barely any current to flow. Even a 12v car battery, who can supply 380 amps+ will not even give you a tingle.

Ok, I think I understand now. Your saying that by using only 0.5v The resistance rqmts. are raised to be more than the human body, therefore when the bars are touched, current cannot flow because your body has aprox. 1MOhm of resistance which is two much to allow current to flow accross the terminals ? Is that correct ? And are you using AC or DC ?

@theelectronwrangler6416 9 жыл бұрын
The reasons he's not being electrocuted are a number of factors, but the gist of it is that he only has .5 volts between terminals, just a very high current. Ohm's law says that voltage is equal to current times resistance. If you have a known constant voltage of .5 volts, and human skin on the super low end of resistivity (your tongue) is around 500 ohms. So solving for current you get .5V/500 ohms = 1 mA. You might feel a tingle at that level, but it's not dangerous. He's measuring 50,000 amps with his clamp-on meter because of the low resistance per meter of the copper lines he's using. Using ohm's law again, we see .5V/50,000A = .000001 ohms, i.e. there's next to zero resistance when there's no load. The metal is heating up because it has a higher resistance than the copper (iron is about 10 times more resistive) and so it acts as a resistor which leads to Joule Heating and the bar gets white hot.

This young man could consider using his intelligence in a more useful manner. He is capable of understanding a much higher order thinking than simple transformers where V1/N1=V2/N2 and V1*I1=V2*I2. In the rank of electrical engineering this is simple stuff. Just because he plays about with the high currents it seems he thinks he is doing something great. To me that is like instead of playing around with a handful of sand he unloaded a truckfull of sand and enjoys counting it with a pair of toothpicks. Such enormous currents are so simpleto generate, he should move into higher order thinking, he has potential, but only he must realise it and get out of this low silly stuff.

Why you mention 240V? in secondary coil he have few volts, and why you mention volts at all, it is all about amps when you calculating can wire withstand or not. As for amps, in car wire to starter is lot thiner and current on starter can reach 500A depends of car and conditions, this wires thicker and 3 in paralel so suppose to hold at least 5000A in total, and if more they will heating a lot but it still will work for some period of time even at 50000A. And he didnt made 50000A, as i understand, 50kA is what this transformer can, but you need to power it with ~110A on input as i understand, i doubdt he had 110A in powerwall or some other power source with 240V*110A, but it could deliver 50kA for some short period of time.
