You could try a flange and spring retention system for the exhaust to reduce vibration transmitted to the pipe, it's the way the race bikes do it, solid pipes always crack.
@ferrumignis
@ferrumignis 28 күн бұрын
I was thinking the same, but also if mounted on springs perhaps they could rig up a lever and cable to pull the pipe out of the exhaust port a bit to help that initial pick up problem.
@Tom-Lahaye
@Tom-Lahaye 28 күн бұрын
Use the ball joint system with spring clamp, separate 2 part ball joints are for sale from Rotax to weld on the flange and the pipe, hook up with springs and the cracking must be solved as this allows for much more flexing and moving. Also very easy to swap pipes without risking your studs.
@ferrumignis
@ferrumignis 28 күн бұрын
@@Tom-Lahaye Ball joint style connections introduces a very unwanted increase in pipe area and volume which will impact exhaust performance on such a highly strung two stroke. Simple slip fit joints with spring retention have been used successfully for a very long time.

I remember that my dad's supervisor, who used to do 49cc 2 stroke tuning for competition engines in the late 1960-ies, told the story that after one heat they've lost at least 500 RPM due to bearing wear. They indeed casted their own cylinders. I also remember my dad (now age 86) told me the story that when one arrived at the job with a new 49cc moped,....it would be tuned by the racing bunch when you went home in the evening.....whithout you knowing! I'll interview my dad about all this...a heap of history is getting lost quite fast! 😉 Keep up the good work, still wearing my 'Say No to Camshafts' T-shirts too!

I was on the pit crew for a drag racing car, a fueler. For my birthday, without me knowing, our mechanic took my 350 Honda 4 cylinder, ported and polished the heads, tuned the carbs, tweaked the valves and timing, and switched to a rear sprocket with an additional tooth. What a difference! It nearly jumped out from under me. Scared the shit out of me at first.

Hi loving the effort all u guys put into your quest for the record. We had the same problems with our RC boats cracking the exhaust pipe. Our fix was to have a flexable joiner on the header pipe to the pipe, we used silcon hose with an inner tube same diameter as the header and had different lengths to help with tuning. Our extended length of 52mm was the sweet spot for our set up. We also changed our mount to the end of the pipe on the small pipe diameter with a flexable mount to help with vibrations, no more crack pipes. hope this is useful. GO FOR MAN!!!!

Hey @2STROKE STUFFING, Been a long term lurker and decided to comment with a really useful tip for sealing the exhaust. I use PC-Fahrenheit high temp epoxy between the flange and head. At first you may think it will never come off but believe me it works exactly the way you need it too. It sticks and seals at high heat but when you need to take the exhaust off you just need to a give it a little tap with a rubber mallet and it will pop off. I use this method to seal the exhaust pipe on my little 17cc helicopter nitro engine.

When it comes to using a damper to lessen the vibrations, you would most likely need a pressurized damper body! We often think of liquids and oils as non-compressible, but in reality they do compress, the amount is just extremely small, and on top you have the seals that are compressible. Therefore you always have a small "deadzone" in a none pressurized damper, but using a pressurized damper body, you can remove that small deadzone. This is one benefit from using a monotube damper design with a gas bladder or separator piston, but that benefit can also be achieved with overpressure in a twin tube construction, easily achieveable by installing a schrader valve. Another thing that could be worth trying, is placing a balast weight somewhere on the engine as far as possible from the axis it rotates around, to see if changing the characteristics of the vibrations have any positive effect on the cavitation or aeration. Best of luck to you and the crew, I'm super excited to follow another adventure across the pond!

Getting closer to the target. Re spring mounted exhaust. There are a few benefits of it, one being it reduces the chance of a broken exhaust and it also makes it quicker to get the barrel off to fit new rings in in the pits between races. But the number one benefit of it as that it reduces vibration at the cylinder head as the vibration isn't reflected back into the cylinder and head, and its a know fact that engine vibration in the cylinder head will cause a drop in power. So if for no other reason than power output you need to isolate the exhaust with spring mounting. TZ Yamaha engines had a pair of O-rings at the header spigot to seal that further help to isolate vibration too.

My real life starting at 17 very much followed that pattern until it was rudely interrupted at age 22 by a beautiful girl a marriage and then babies like it was an assembly line (I’m from Detroit area but to use that analogy for families should be given some more spiritual based . My mom finally decided it was time for a trip to the vet. Snip snip you won’t feel a thing. They lied, my own mother. She still was the best mom and absolute champion grandmother. Love seeing you back on the record attempt! Next time shooting indoors over there, remember they have 60Hz in their power-system = set the camera to 24fps or try find another shutter speed to avoid flicker… Kör hårt!

If I was allowed to join your team my advice would be….a treadmill strarter for testing and bump start on the salt plus a pressurized fuel tank like on a camp lantern and to always run the tank dry.

Loved it, but just in case you haven't figured it out yet you may have to swtich to NTSC frame rates to get rid of the flicker in the shop.
