Don Field G3XTT takes us through the fascinating properties of the 6m Band (50 MHz) which results in people calling it “The Magic Band“. The propagation properties of this band, as it is nestled between the HF bands and the VHF bands, give remarkable and often unexpected results.
These propagation properties attract enthusiasts who seek out these often unpredictable properties but with incredible results.
Don has also written the book, “The Magic Bands” which covers 6m and 4m. The book is available from the RSGB, Practical Wireless and Amazon.
Don Field G3XTT is a well-known person in amateur radio, having been on the board of the RSGB, carried out DXpeditions, and is the editor of Practical Wireless.

Nice presentation Don ! The MAGIC is indeed in the unexpected and L I S T E N I N G W I T H Y O U R H U M A N E A R S ... !! I remember that 20 sec multi-hop Es opening with 5J0BV; driving home @ 100+ km/h in the 50km/h zone to work KH7R in Es/F2/Es longpath (!!!); that crazy opening to Far-East with XX9JN and KG6DX with 59+ signals; ZC4 via F2 going over my head to the west of PA - I had to wait for more than 2 hours before the skip got shorter. Now, that's magic. Let's make the band magic again and put out a classic, audible SSB/CW signal and stop FTx when those sigs get audible ... Clicking a mouse is not magic, it's pathetic ! -- Enno, PF5X (220 6m-DXCCs worked in CW/SSB)

Enno - thank you so much for your comment. It's amazing that you had that contact with the Far East - and more. Quite amazing. Yes, indeed MAGIC.
