Thanks everyone for the terrific questions and comments after my talk. Kudos to Rob Sherwood NC0B for being in the audience and coming on camera to respond to questions and bail me out when the engineering was beyond my current capabilities, LOL! A Q from Nileche about the apparent absence of the Icom 7300 and 7610 in my charts...there ARE there in my analysis as per the Nov 2019 edition of the Sherwood Tables. But they didn't make the cuts based on the Quadrant Analysis procedure for the top quartiles in teh data. But, here are the relevant data points for Nileche: Icom 7300 4.7 eHam avg 113.32 Sherwood Performance Index (SPI) 1.26 Performance-to-Price Ratio Icom 7610 4.6 eHam avg 121.49 SPI 1.25 PPR

Thanks for a deep insight into the economics of picking a good RX, past and present. Both you and Rob hit the topic on center. Thanks, N0UU

Very interesting and a lot of work gone into the presentation. I came away with two main points. 1) It's very subjective, what a person likes makes the rig right for them, 2) the general standard of quality is so high that it's the features and ergonomics which are often the deciding factor of what is the "best" radio for an individual.

"You can go broke saving money" - love it! Thanks, Frank, for a statistician's look at this and for all the work in collecting the data. A very interesting take on the subject of sorting through what's out there.

Sounds Sweet speakers is still in business though they can’t get parts so you can’t order one right now. Talked to Bob Heil about them and he said they just get rid of all the highs. One of their features is “no hiss”, and I like mine, at least for CW! If I listen to pure tone sine wave slowly spanning a range of frequencies, I have noticed there are specific tones that I cannot hear, some just in one ear and others just in the other. It like the nerve or cochlear hairs for that specific frequency in one ear or the other, or both :( , have just dropped out and are gone. At 70, can’t hear below about 100 or over about 10k Hz any how. (As a kid could not understand why the tv’s high pitched scream did not bother my parents.) So individualizing adjustments to the listener sounds good to me.

Jer, thanks. If you're talking about Heil's PRAS system...I believe that the one I have has High, Mid and Low frequency adjustments. The Mid, where voice articulation resides, has a frequency and gain adjustment. I have not had a rig (e.g., Anan) with Pure Sine Wave although Flex has plans they say to add it so I may experience it on my Flex 6400 "soon".

Is it your opinion that eHam reviews are impacted by a bias where the review wants to reinforce their purchase decision (feel even better about it) with a positive review?

Mike, that is a very valid question. We all tend to think that what we have invested in is the best to stop ourselves looking foolish. I do think though, in Frank's analysis, by taking a mean of reviews it gives a good basis for comparison.

Mike, that *could* be the case for an individual. I do not think this is the case for a set of reviews by a collectivity of reviewers. There are “fan boys” who open the box and jump on their keyboard. I investigated the length of ownership variable in my web scraping of individual eHam rig reviews from four years ago. I did not see what you’re describing as significantly influencing the average rating.

Here is my conclusion. If you like your radio, you can keep your radio.
