Secure Set

Күн бұрын

In this multi-segment video, we test Secure Set as an alternative material to concrete for a base for direct-embedded, non-guyed communication towers, towers typically used for antennas, small wind turbines and other purposes.
In the first segment, we compare the process of tower installation via the traditional concrete method versus with Secure Set.
In the second segment, we test the 65-ft tall tower set with a Secure Set foundation to the ANSI TIA222G standard (which specifies a direct buried, non-guyed, cantilever 65-ft tower, when subjected to a 60-mph wind and coated with a half-inch of ice, would have a 4-degree lean at the tip of the tower away from the base of the tower without the base being compromised).
As a final test, we see how much load it would take to pull the Secure Set out of the ground. We hope you enjoy the video!
Find out more about Secure Set and it's many uses at www.secureset.net.

One test that would have proved the footing did not move is to release all tension and see if the plumb bob returned to the same pre-pull starting spot.

Have tower manufacturers approved this method of constructing tower bases for their respective towers ? Also soil density is a critical factor. What are your compensating factors for different soil densities ? And lastly what is the cost differential over a traditional base constructed from a rebar cage and concrete ?

Damm i have never seen something so wacky yet mindblowing brillant, but does secure set act like concrete over time, by that i mean keep getting harder ??, i know if you have old concrete that was mixed with flints, even after 50 years it is damm impossible to break up with a jack hammer, if secure set was like this it would a revolution for us Hams and our towers :) :)

What are the ramifications of putting something like this in the ground? Does it affect the quality of your ground water if you're on a bore supply? Does this change over time?

Thank you for the question and your interest. The use of Secure Set is a zero environmental impact on surrounding soil or ground water. Secure Set is a very hard foam that does not break down over time in the ground. It's projected to last 40 plus years, since nothing really effects the foam. GRA Services

I would imagine up to 25 feet with any kind of wind turbine this could hold but to save your own skin I would probably suggest using guy wires. I have a 60lb turbine and wind load is about 5. Since the city might mess with me for having this free standing I was considering using this to put the tower up with a mid hinge bracket to lower the tower to service the wind turbine. BUT I would defiantly use guy wires. Just because the tower CAN flex that much and survive with no weight up top... doesn't mean you want it to ever flex that much. Especially with a 60lb wind turbine on top. Using foam I could just take the tower out if I get a complaint. You say this is the 4 gallon kit?

Can I use Secure Set to temporarily place a tower until after my building is built? I'm thinking once the base has been pulled out, the foam can easily be cut away and the base re poured in the new location with minimal damage to the base (concrete not so much). If not, is there an alternative way to temporarily mount a tower?

Hello Drinkin-n-Thinkin, Secure Set will be a very good alternative. You can cut it away after you pull it out if you want to set it permanently in concrete. Thank you

What about cost comparative to traditional concrete?
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for your interest and your question. Our customers do their own cost comparisons, because there are so many different ways of looking at the use of concrete vs our Secure Set high-density, closed cell foam. One option is that you buy the numerous 60 to 80 lb. bags of concrete (It takes 5 of the 80 lb. bags to fill the same hole as 1 Gal. Secure Set, since this will fill 2.5 cu. ft. (space/volume) vs. concrete only 1/2 cubic ft. per 80 lb. bag. Then you have the comparison of the lifting/loading/hauling/unloading/lifting again/ moving to work locations and the need for water and a large mixer with concrete vs. using a few 40 lb. boxes or a few 40 lb. to 50 lb. buckets of Secure Set and a cordless drill. Another option is to have the concrete bags delivered to the site, which is normally just a drop not the movement to where you are working. And then there is the option of scheduling a concrete truck, but have you priced that lately? Of course, there is always the option of hiring someone to do all this back breaking work for you. Working with Secure Set is so much easier and saves you time/money in labor, and it sets up so much faster than concrete. So, because there are so many ways of comparing and prices that vary throughout the U.S. and other countries, we do not do the comparisons. GRA Services

Would secure set be strong enough to use for two hammock posts?
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, Yes, it will work for a hammock. However the depth you set the post is different than fences or gates. The depth for the post is 50% of the overall length of the post you are using must be set in the ground. Thank you

Hello, In certain application using a Sono Tube is helpful. Most often they are used when you have sandy soil. If you have normal soil conditions, it is better to set the posts in native soil. Also, tilt your hammock posts at about 15° angle off centerline. Thank you

@SecureSet-Fence-Installation
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Nick, The hole was 28" in diameter and 60" deep. To get the cubic volume of the hole, That would be 14"*14"*3.1416*60". That is 36,945 cu inches. Divide that by 1,728 to get cubic feet. There is 21.3 cubic feet of void to fill. One 80 lb. bag of concrete will fill 1/2 cubic feet of space. (Bag measures 12"x18"x4" = .5 cubic feet per bag. To fill 21.3 cubic feet we used 43 bags of concrete. Current price for a bag of concrete at Home Depot is $5.17. (Jan '22 pricing) $5.17 x 43 = $222.31 (That does not include tax). We used 2 - 2.5 gallon kits and 2 - 1 gallon kits to fill the void. 2.5 gal kits costs $75.95 and the 1 gallon kits cost $36.95. So, total cost for the Secure Set foam is $225.80 It is a no brainer when you consider the amount of labor it takes to mix, pour and set the concrete. Thank you, I hope this helps.

Can I apply secure set to vinyl fence post? Since I have only seen it used for wood and metal fence.
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, The best advice I can give about vinyl posts is to make sure you wipe down the outside of the post to remove any forming oil residue that may still be present. Other than that, make sure the post is held very steady during the expansion process of the foam. The post is so light, sometimes the foam moves the post a little and then you would be off plumb. The post being hollow is of no consequence. Thank you
@victortruong6528
@victortruong6528 4 жыл бұрын
Secure Set, thank you for your response. Your information will be really helpful for me, btw what do you mean by “ the post being hollow is of no consequence” ? Does it mean the secure set cannot be used for the hollow vinyl post? Does the foam will expand inside the post and bend it?
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Victor, What I meant is that the expanding Secure Set will not crush or misshape the vinyl posts. However, it is important to support the posts well and to be vigilant about keeping the posts from being "lifted" out of the hole while the foam expands. The vinyl posts are very light compared to a wood or metal post. Also, if the post is set on one side of the hole, and you have a small gap on the other side, the expanding foam could push the vinyl away from your plumb line because there would be more foam on one side of the post instead of the other. The final result of setting the vinyl post will be good, just stay on top of the process when the foam is expanding. Thank you.

@SecureSet-Fence-Installation
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Rehoboth, Using only concrete, yes, the weight of the concrete is part of the stability of the tower. The main difference between using concrete and Secure Set, (which is similar when we set large towers for stadium lighting,) is that Secure Set penetrates and bonds extremely well to the substrate(soil) where as concrete fills the hole but does not bond as well to the soil. Uplift tests indicate Secure Set, when compared equally to concrete, in the same size hole and with the same soil type, yields a 61% greater uplift resistance. Thank you.

Hello XPFTP, Under ground, life expectancy is greater than 30 years. If any of the foam is exposed to direct sunlight, there will be oxidation on its surface. You can prevent oxidation of exposed foam simply by painting the surface with a quality latex or acrylic paint. I like to use Rustoleum heavy gray primer. Works very well and gives the surface of the foam a "concrete" look. Thank you
