Using the 50 watt version 2 (concentric knobs) EL34 and 6L6 5153s. Let's see if there is a big difference between the 2 tube versions!
The EL34 does have the C137 mod as well for the Blue channel

Nice video man. It’s an awesome amp, I love my 6L6 version. I like how I’ve seen comparisons on these amps- but still another video pops up and I’m like “ooo I should check this out.” lol

There are sooooooo many 5153 comparisons out there. I had them both at the time so I had to join the club lol. Hoping my approach was at least entertaining. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for posting this! I just snipped the c137 capacitor and the blue channel is much better, not as flubby… i have the 6l6 212 combo. The 6l6 has a more aggressive bite to its distortion. The el34 is much more open now, snipping the c137 cap is an improvement for sure.

I agree. I love both amps so really can't go wrong with either esp after snipping one of the legs of the el34 version for blue channel

I keep hearing that the EL34 winds up sounding like a Modded Marshall with the C-137 mod, and I’ve been dying to try it myself. I figured with how much you would have to pay for a brand new Marshall amp, the EL34 with the C-137 mod seems like it would be a great way to get those Marshall tones without having to pay Marshall prices, especially since it’s even less expensive than the Friedman Runt 50 brand new and the Runt 50 doesn’t even have a lead channel like the 5150 EL34 50 watt.

Ehh, I think it's still very much 5150 flavored after the mod. If u are wanting the Marshall tone I highly suggest a DSL 100H. I would say the JCM2000 DSL but finding one with all the issues fixed is tough. You want get Marshall out of the el34 5153. But it is a def necessary mod for that channel to open it up more

Great job! I like the aggressive sound of the blue channel on the 6L6, but way prefer the red channel on the EL34. More upper mids and more tight. I mean they are close but the 6L6 has a ''scratchy'' sound on the red channel (that's how I hear it anyway haha).

I owned both the 6L6 100w and 50w for a verrryyyy long time (like 2011 to 2018) and the 50w, honestly, sounded way too thin/not enough headroom in our band mix with 2 guitars (when I was alone with the bassist and the drummer, it was better)...like it fell apart. I never had the EL34 50w but I would be curious to see if to would do the same thing cause I've been more in to that modded Marshall thing over the last few years.

@Benjamin Girard I know exactly what you mean. I agree for a full band setting they both fall apart. But if you have a good PA at hand and micing that it definitely helps. I've never we had the 100 watt but I'm sure it doesn't have an issue. For shows 50 watts work as long as they have a decent enough PA of course. Cheers man!

@@DeathMetalDevin Yeah for a second I thought that maybe I should grab one (there's a guy who's selling the 50w EL34 with the C137 mod) but I think I'll stick to either order a Splawn Super Sport 50 or find an Engl Retro Tube or something ;) Cheers!!!
