I usually uses my middle finger for the spin controller.and it also helps by adding few more 2 to 3 extra spins I find very helpful.

I think I saw your video about 6 months ago. And about thousands of times of practice, I CAN DO IT FLAWLESSLY NOW!!!! THANK YOU. People look at me in awe and it feels so cool. So whoever is trying this trick, it needs lots of unrelenting practice, and lots of mistakes. But, you will get it eventually. So stay at it.

Keeping your middle finger still, focus on moving your index finger out and down after clearing the fleshy part. Moving the index finger out is the important part, it's what makes the pen point up (giving it a bigger looking motion). The more you move your index finger outwards the more the pen points up. Move your index finger back in to make it return to your thumb, and down to help return it from the big arc. Focus on 2:02 - 2:12 of the video

I have been mastering this for all of ten minutes and I have a tip (but correct me if I am wrong). I think if it feels like you are doing it right but it doesn't look very pronounced you should try moving the pen closer to the tip of your fingers for the animation.
