Niall, always good to get up early in the morning for that beautiful light☀ Followed you along on the Oudoor Active map to add to the sense of where you were at. The stretch along the Owenea River did look beautiful and the wet is a given💧💧Agree that Herons are cool and so patient and skilful in their fishing👍 Good to hear that Bluestack bog roads are particulary boggy, I would expect nothing less😊 No doubt the sight of Lough Eske was a great lift knowing you were well on the home stretch. It looked lovely down at the shore with that beautiful light coming back on the hills with the evening. Well done on keeping on with grit and determination despite all the aches and pains that went with the challenge👍 A superb achievement👏👏

Thanks Gerry 🙂 I guess it is ironic to complain about bog roads being boggy 🙈 At the time it just felt unfair 🤣

@@nialloutdoors Tom Crean would be proud of you brother . The legendary distance you travelled mimics the crean portfolio . You now know how he felt that day when he marched 56 km to safety point and fell into the arms of the Dimitri. Rest well, Man of steel .

I think Tom Crean is many, many levels above me but I appreciate the sentiment 😊

Oops! Somehow missed this comment Miriam 😳 That last bit was far from pleasant but the feeling of success wiped out all the discomfort 😊 All healed up now and ready to rock and roll again 😎

Mr Heron 😂 you absolutely flew that. Great persistence to keep moving for that distance in one day. I would imagine the feet were hot, tired and sore after that. Well done Niall 👏 and fair play. All the best.

Hi Niall, many congratulations on finishing the hike in 1 day. I live in England and was on holiday in Donegal visiting family in August 2023. I called into the tourist information office in Donegal town, picked up the 3 route cards for the Blue Stack Way and walked it from Donegal town to Ardara in the last week in August, so missed you by a week. I enjoyed your video so much, as it brought back so many memories. Views of the great scenery and the deer I saw standing on the path near Lough Eske. I was wearing boots on my hike, but even in August the climb up Cloghmeen was very boggy and needed sock changes. All the best.

Hey Tony, glad you enjoyed both the walk and the memories. I may do it that direction some time but maybe camp halfway and not in one go 🤣

Wow, fair play to you Niall! 52km in one day. Epic! I could see you were flagging near the end but you kept going anyway. I bet you slept well that night. Were you sore afterwards?

Thanks Kevin, it was definitely a long day. I actually slept badly that night due to an achy knee that I kept turning on to in my sleep 🙈 Apart from the blisters that took 8 days to heal properly I was in surprisingly good shape the days after. I was back in work on the Tuesday (walked Sunday) and by Wednesday pretty much all aches and pains were gone. If it wasn't for the blisters I'd have been good to go again, I guess my training was better than I thought 🤣

Did you take magnesium after your trek? I am usually sore the second day after a big push and I find magnesium/calcium tablets help a lot with muscle soreness. Another thing that I find good is curcumin, which is an extract from turmeric. It's a natura anti-inflammatory. Today I got myself a pair of Altra Lonepeak hiking boots with the wide toebox. Looking forward to trying them out on the weekend 🙂

I didn't but daily I take omega 3 fish oil and a broad spectrum multi vitamin. The fish oils are anti inflammatory also and I find them good. I think most of my issues with sore muscles were tight calves from walking funny on my sore feet during the walk and the few days after. I really need to stretch more!

I've ordered a pair of Topo Athletic Trailventure 2 WP, hopefully it getting them in a few days. Similar to Altra but not quite zero drop.
