In my first entry to Dominic Bender's Tree Challenge, I make an ash shillelagh that works just fine as a walking stick AND a clobbering stick.

You would enjoy it more if you invested in a draw knife and built yourself a shave horse. You can find good draw knives at most flea markets cheap. Just refurbish them. A shave horse is a fun project and will bring you hours of enjoyment. You can find ideas and plans right here on KZfaq.

Actually faction fighter used oak, Hawthorne, and Blackthorn. It was based on availability. Blackthorn became popular because of it's rapid growth. As a Bata crafter myself any number of woods make excellent Shillelaghs. Do your research before spouting off your facts.

Think it's a little thick they are meant to be black thorn but they also use hawthorn and paint it black. They also say what's the best time to cut a stick from a tree? .... Answer " when you see it" if not it would be gone when you go back to cut it out lol.BTW I used to take a friend to show him the blackthorn tree he was a towny . We used to gather the slows from them "bit like a plumb" he made slow gin from it.

+ManhattanWoodProject From its shape, the look of its bark, and how you've described it as being heavy and dense...it might be Whitethorn (also known as Hawthorn) which is a very common hedging plant in Ireland. I very much doubt its Ash, which grows pretty straight, and the bark of which is much smoother. Hurley sticks are made from ash for this very reason (straight grain that is, with a turn at the base of the tree)...plus its 'springiness'. Incidentally, a lot of Irish folklore is attached to the Whitethorn, and where a lone one grows in the middle of a field it's rarely cut down or removed as they are known as 'fairy trees' which are the gateway between our world and the one where the 'little people' dwell. In fact a few short years back in County Clare, a major road construction project had to be altered due to a lone Whitethorn being in the middle of the planned route, and consequently the road had to be diverted, rather than disturb the tree. So, I hope you didn't cut down a Whitethorn, and draw trouble on yourself.

Well, a competent woodworker wasn't on this video. He also didn't have a clue about what a shillelagh is. A true shillelagh is only made from Blackthorn (this is why it's black!) not Ash. In Scotland and Ireland the shillelagh is taken seriously (did you know there's more than one type?). I would suggest this rank amateur avoid contact with the Scots and Irish until he learns what he's doing!

@ManhattanWoodProject
@ManhattanWoodProject 7 жыл бұрын
I do my videos because I enjoy making and sharing how I made my projects, and hopefully inspiring others to make something too. I am absolutely not a master woodworker (or shillelagh maker, not sure which trade you reference), but most woodworkers on KZfaq aren't masters and yet are still able to make great projects and videos that inspire thousands, even millions, of people to at least consider trying something outside their realm of expertise each day. Also, I can't figure out where I try to pass my version of the shillelagh off as a piece of traditional heritage or pass off that I'm a local (from Ireland, I assume). New Mexico (in the U.S.) is quite far from Ireland, and I made the shillelagh because it was what the shape, size, and weight of the wood inspired me to make out of it. Thanks for commenting!

I never herd you say that you were Irish, I never herd you say you were a master in wood craft. But what i did see was someone that loves working with timber, & as you said that you hope it inspired others to try something new. The name of the walking stick comes from the village of that name in Co Wicklow. And any walking stick of that nature is given that name. Nice job on making the walking stick. And this is coming from an Irish man. Ps I would love to see the KZfaq channel & work of the fella that was putting your work & channel down.

Well that says it all. 2 subscribers on his channel. And doesn't even know what a puffball mushroom is. And that the cloud of dust when hit are the spores coming out & they can end up in your lungs. I know that when I about 7 or 8. Don't put someone's chanel down, just because you don't like it. Why don't you make a walking stick if you think your so good!!

Thanks! Don't worry about the haters, they'd explode if they didn't have something to look down on. :)
