58 Strong Black Coffee

It was spring in Augsburg, Germany,
Another night’s duty to get through,
In the Army it’s curious what you think about,
With nothing else to do.

Let me check the phone log,
So tedious and un-fun,
I wonder why we make copies,
Nobody reads the original one.

I wonder what my job is really,
I have no gun and have no fear,
And why are all the doors locked,
If I have duty and I’m here?

Well, it is time to set up the coffee pot,
It’s easy when you’re alone,
Because there’s no argument about measurements,
But don’t the men have coffee pots at home?

What if I loaded the coffee pot with decaf,
Now wouldn’t be humorous,
I wondered if anyone would notice,
When in the morning no one was nervous.

But then I thought about myself,
I don’t like decaf coffee,
I’d have to make mine in a different pot,
And drink it separately.

But I couldn’t find another pot,
Anyway the real thing was faster,
Yet another time I saved my men,
From impending unnatural disaster.
