Yeah, that was a nice moment. Another thing mentioned during the podcast that made me smile was the idea that during the live version of this episode they perhaps should have had the waitress say 'yes'. I believe part of what makes the show's dynamic between Charlie and the waitress feel okay is the subtext that most of the audience knows they're married in real life. That, and the characters are all cartoonish anti-heroes. Still I agree it would have felt nice for the live version to break the third wall and her say yes.

@Kvinsky Why on earth would people turn on him? As far as I can see the main people who were criticizing him were teenagers who thought he was a little cringe because he is older than them, and older people are inherently cringe to teenagers. The rest of the criticism I have seen seems like bad faith at best. Stuff like Hamilton not being progressive enough for people. It is good, better even, to comment on the structural problems with the US government, but I am not sure that Hamilton (which was first and foremost meant to entertain) would have been able to navigate that deeper complexity and still remain watchable as a musical.

I envy musician's ability to just come up with something like that on the spot like Charlie did there and just change the mood and emotions of a whole room. Music is powerful, man. I'm a visual artist myself and I often hear people say the same thing about artists, like "I envy artists' ability to just conjure an image out of thin air, it's like a special power", but like, maybe it's trivial to musicians, but music's so much more special an ability to me. What Charlie did there with the improvised musical was like magic to me, it's such a powerful ability.

fellow visual artist who has felt this way for a long time. I realized that I see visual art as more of an energy impregnated symbol that does its work subconsciously, whereas music is pure cathartic expression and you can channel the information/emotion you want to convey in many different ways consciously and unconsciously. make some shit for sure man, you probably have a latent ability

Thank you for doing this episode justice!!! Charlie riffing on the piano several times, Cormac as a fantastic guest, the guys staying on track and covering almost every joke and important moment from the episode AND the live show... This was everything. I was so worried that adding Lin-Manuel would take their focus away from The Nightman Cometh - and I was so glad to be proven wrong! My favourite part (and it's not easy to pick one for this episode!) is from around 58:00 onwards, when Charlie, Cormac and LMM are just geeking out over chords and different styles of music while playing around on the piano and guitar and spontaneously singing. It was a excellent call to have 30 minutes of somewhat more organized discussion with Cormac out of the way before bringing in LMM, and then having another 45 minutes of chaotic discussion and excitement with a genuine fanboy. I really appreciate that LMM himself kept bringing the conversation back around to the episode and forced the guys to break down each song and almost every character moment. I didn't expect him to get the guys to open about their love for theatre and music and Sondheim, and it was wonderful to listen to this nerdy side of Glenn and especially Charlie come out! I was so worried this podcast episode wouldn't live up to our collective love for the Nightman Cometh and end up being a disappointment, so it feels amazing to know we're in safe hands with Rob, Charlie and Glenn, and Megan and the crew. Thanks for respecting us fans and creeps and giving us everything we didn't even know we wanted!

You should do an episode where Lin rips off Charlie and makes a rap version of Night-man and it becomes a huge hit. The gang would talk about it and Charlie realizes Lin’s new hit is his play but nobody can remember doing the play because you know. Then Charlie tries to sue Lin but has no proof but finds the original chicken scratch script and the lawyer guy says “you can do shit with this”. So he tries to find proof but nobody saved the script. Charlie tries to find the piano player but she died long ago but saved the sheet music in her old desk. The desk was bought by Lin at an estate sale. He finds the original sheet music and stole it. He uses it to write a super successful local theatre production that goes viral.

It is honestly kind of fascinating. They have been doing this since The Office was a new thing. I bet they don't even fully know where the line is between the characters personalities and their own sense of humor anymore, as too much irony slowly become reality if it is maintained for too long. As a much less interesting example: My wife and I love the movie Hot Rod. It is just ridiculously stupid in all the right ways. We started ironically calling each other "babe," a term we both hated, as a joke based on the scene where Will Arnet yells it over and over. We were doing it because both of us hated it, and that was funny. But after doing it for a while it is now just literally what we call each other, no irony involved.

I feel bad for him lmao but it’s kind of funny even on the podcast he has the same outcome as his character. I assume he comes back in because he’s in the thumbnail with LMM but I really respect Lin saying it’s good they have the composer so he can ask him questions he seems very humble. Although Trey went to college for music and has always wanted to make musicals, he teamed up with Robert Lopez (someone who was already a theater legend and is a multiple EGOT winner) to write a full Broadway play.
