Er, if your entire pick was magnetic, you wouldn't need to pass a magnet down. The pick would do the same job. However, I'm curious as to why the keys have the dimple notches down one side of their surface rather than down the middle. It seems to me that having them centred would be a better design.
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry, no idea about the non centric dimples :-)

@@LockNoob I've never seen one. It's clear from the design of the keyway why but having cuts down the centre of a key would leave it stronger than along the edge.
@georgelangrick7384
@georgelangrick7384 3 жыл бұрын
I think it's biased to the side for ease of manufacture - the core is simply a cylindrical section with a large slot sliced out of it for the keyway - it seems it would be more technical and/or costly to have the core, a 360° body encompassing a milled out keyway slot in the center. And I don't believe the keys strength is a concern, it's still a pretty chunky piece - oddly without any warding at all, as far as I can see... These are just my guesses for what they're worth.

Having watched LPL pick this, you probably already know it's a 0.9mm hex tool and the pins need to be driven out the other way (hit the rounded end). These locks appear to be made in Taiwan by Federal who also sell their own (improved) version, the UCF series. Disturbing how quickly tools appeared on the market to pick these locks, one is non destructive and the other breaks pins.

@@LockNoob I tend to take a similar path. New locks I pick a couple of times before attempting to film. Older locks I have had for a while that I have picked several times then left in storage finally come out and I pick them maybe two or three times then film. Considering you had only picked that very difficult lock twice you showed great skill. 👍🏻

Lock users, seems obvious, the first thing to do is file off the company name badge from the front of the lock; Extra security making it more difficult to determine the internals.

When I moved in here 11 years ago I changed all the locks to ABS Gen 1 thinking they were more secure but recently the front door lock got bodged and someone broke in. The front part of the lock seems to have broken off but he still got in. I was only out for 20 min and the door was open when I got back, so I need to go 3*, I think I will get this lock any advice appreciated.

With locks with a magnetic element like these. Do you ever have to worry about the key becoming demagnetized? I once had a coat that had magnetic fastenings all over it and it was actually a nightmare for scrambling things like credit cards and especially magnetic public transport tickets like those for the Paris metro. Could my Avocet door keys get similarly messed up or are the magnets in them relatively safe from being changed by external magnetic fields due to their size/power.

@@LockNoob i saw that the magnetic pin was the first pin, not in position 4 like in the demo lock (and also my lock). So it s easier of course to place and remove it when its the first pin. When it s in position 3 or 4 it s harder i guess. I think you also require to press the a detent at the end of the keyway otherwise you can t rotate the core.... Waiting for the magnets and i ll get to work on it. Great video dude, it ll come handy !!!
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 4 жыл бұрын
Jason_Music you can turn the core, but if you want to turn the cam, you need to press in the back of the lock to engage it like the key would. The magnet can be in any position, but honestly, it’s easy to place it anywhere and in fact it stays in better if it’s not in the first or last position. It’s a great lock to learn for sure

If a spare key is left in the cylinder on the inside of the door during the day (to act as a thumb turn), is the magnet in the key going loose it's strength (to the metal pin in the lock)? Is the magnet in the key prone to being weakened by placing on metal/ferrous objects? Would it be reliable over a 5 to 10 year period?
@ddimov2557
@ddimov2557 2 жыл бұрын
I would say no. Magnets lose their strength when heated to above their Curie temperature point which could be 80C or above depending on the type of magnet used in the key
@FranktheTank319
@FranktheTank319 4 жыл бұрын
Hypothetically, couldn't you just use a wiper insert with a really strong magnet on the end outside of the lock? Like after you pick all of the other pins, you put in the wiper insert and the strength of the magnet could carry throughout the insert setting the pin. But I've never picked a lock like this, so it's all just hypothetical.

@LockNoob
@LockNoob 2 жыл бұрын
I surprisingly understand your concern, but it doesn’t stack up to real life statistics on crime. The lock, unless there is a clear and easy bypass, isn’t the primary attack Meath or for a criminal. When the re are windows, social engineering and letterboxes, why bother with a difficult, high skill lock? I always say, should we ban videos on boxing and butchery as we can easily learn how to hurt people watching those videos. Violent crime is very serious but no one would say watching or learning martial arts encourages people to use those skills to hurt people. Another thought is how do you know what lock to buy? Do you just buy the one in the store closest to you? Just leave the one you bought your house with? I think lock security deserves a little more attention from consumers

Always nice to see what's inside the product before you buy. This lock is priced the same but it appears much tougher to defeat. I suspect a burglar would not spend somewhere in the vicinity of 1h in front of a door getting videoed on CCTV but rather break a window or even cut his way through it.
