Did our video help you? If so, consider buying us a beer: bit.ly/3feE6tJ
In this video we show you how to relocate the back-up camera on your 5th Gen 4runner. The reason why you would need to do this is because you decided to install an aftermarket rear bumper with either a single or dual swing-outs and the swing-out blocks the OEM camera location under the Toyota 4runner bezel on the rear hatch.
You could basically consider this Part 3 for the C4 Rear Bumper Installation but since there are other manufacturers of rear bumpers for 5th Gen 4runners, we decided to have this as a stand-alone video.

Recently purchased 2015 4R SR5 with 100K miles. Within a week or so, the backup camera would only work part of the time. A month later, NO GO. The transmission backup switch was calling for the camera and the dash display would go gray. I used this very good video as a guide to remove my rear hatch inside cover and the center bracket. I was able to unplug from the camera and the frame wiring harness to get the short jumper out with out pulling the outside trim off. Plugged both in and out a few times and camera is now working 100%. In hind site, I probably should have put a small dab of dielectric grease on each of the female terminals b4 I replugged everything back together. I will if the camera stops working again. These connectors are outside of the plastic vapor barrier and would see moisture from the outside. Thanks for the great explanation of how to get the hatch cover off.

Thanks for putting this video together. I need to relocate mine but will likely move it up to the top of the hatch, beside the 3rd brake light. Seems like it will be much easier.

Thank you. This video was very helpful. I had no issues running wires with a coat hanger. I installed this on a cbi rear bumper. Bracket mounted perfectly to my jerry can holder. For anyone wondering if this c4 mount will work.

FYI the larger harness at the top of the hatch houses the wiring for the camera and lic plate light wires. Cut there and tap the new harness there and run it the camera bracket and you're done.

Great video. I watch a lot of Wanderlost Overland and their work has helped my with a few mods. I am no tool man but channels like yours and Wanderlost are awesome. My wife thinks otherwise! Trying to think if the review camera is worth all that time and effort. I'm not sure I use it that often always looking over shoulders and in mirrors while backing up..

Great to hear you appreciate our channel. We know about the Wanderlust Overland couple. They make good videos. I personally have never used a backup camera, but then again, I've never had a vehicle new enough that has one. It seems people like and use them but I also understand that relocating the back-up camera is quite a bit of work too. If you do go for it, good luck with the job.

great plan use your own connectors when c4 provided a solder shrink tubing connector. glad your not working on my 4runner. but connectors are never stronger than a solder joint.

Hey Brandon, you use what you like and I learned to like using shrink butt connectors. The connections I made aren't going anywhere. And yeah, something tells me you're the type of person I wouldn't be inclined to help anyway. Helping my friend Garett out with his C4 rear bumper install took 3 full days of filming to document and even more time to edit. I find it amazing you can watch this video and only mention this supposed fault of me using an inferior electrical connector. There's a word that comes to mind when describing people like you and it's "Trolling A-Hole". There's a way to bring something to somebody's attention without pissing them off. You could have simply said the C4 provided connectors would have been a better choice to use. But, instead you went straight to a-hole mode. Happy Trolling. No need to comment on any more of our work. Your comments will be deleted.

@@TimmyTheToolman on a vehicle that is obviously taken Offroad and a camera that is for all intents and purposes now mounted to the frame of the vehicle. you don't think that butt connector could ever shake itself loose? i have seen way too many car fires from failed butt connectors and faulty wiring to know it only takes a few minutes to solder the wires and use heatshrink tubing. hell C4 didnt provide an all in one solution for nothing.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 жыл бұрын
@@messeduprex Oh, you're going to talk civil now. Ok. There's no stress on those wires anywhere, especially where the butt connectors are. The butt connectors inside the hatch are protected, wrapped in electrical tape and securely ziptied many times. On the swing-out, we put the wires and butt connectors in split wire loom, wrapped electrical tape around the area where the butt connectors are and ziptied it throughout it's entire route from under the vehicle, to the driver side swing-out bracket, and then multiple slots in the swing-out itself. There's no way in hell any of the connections I made are going to work themselves loose. If you truly watched the video and saw how we did it, you'd understand there's no forces being applied to the wires. Furthermore, the ratcheting type of crimpers I use make a VERY solid crimp on the wire. Follow that up with the fact that they are shrink butt connectors with the ends fully sealed, how are they are going to work themselves loose unless somebody get the wires in their hand and yanks very hard? Come on Dude, you're reaching. My friend Garett's rig isn't going to catch fire from any work we did. Speaking of car fires, what's your personal experience with them? Are you an arson investigator? Maybe you're an insurance adjustor? I've been a firefighter for the last 13 years and have been to dozens of car fires. The amazing thing is I couldn't say if a wire coming loose from a butt connector caused any of the fires I went to. Now, some of these fires looked like the source was electrical in nature, but there's usually no way to know what the definitive cause was unless there was a dead give-away like an arson fire where a window was broken and the fire started from an interior seat with no plausible ignition source.

@@PhoRunner You know, I try, and sometimes I can but often I can't. If I can set the record straight and possibly educate someone, I will. If the comment is really offensive, I just delete them from our channel. This guy Brandon wasn't necessarily wrong but his approach definitely was. Are the solder shrink connectors good? Yeah, they are. I've never used them so I wasn't going to experiment on my buddy Garett's rig. I wanted to use what I knew would work well and that was the shrink butt connectors I had. He was trying to make it sound like my connectors of choice were a potential fire hazard but the dude was talking out of his ass. He tried to sound like some authority on car fires, but what he didn't know is he was debating with an actual firefighter who's put out dozens of car fires. There's absolutely no way you can tell what caused an electrical fire in a rig. You can suspect some janky wiring the owner did, but this guy Brandon was trying to say he has personal knowledge that wires falling out of butt connectors has been the cause of many car fires. Yeah, sure Brandon. Boy, the things people pull out of their ass when they are debating online.
