In today’s episode I go over the installation of a 6.0 powerstroke coolant filter from t&a diesel performance. These are underrated, and provide inexpensive reliability. The oil cooler failures in these trucks are very common and it’s usually due to a blockage in the oil cooler on the coolant side. Filtering your coolant will keep you temps in spec. The tow pig 2.0 is coming together!

Damn!! That’s it! Why aren’t recalls on a method like this. So, I’m replacing the oil cooler on my 2013 Dodge Journey. From my research it turns out that the journeys from 20010 to 2018 have these issues with the oil cooler going bad. But I haven’t seen anything about sand. I mentioned it to my wife when I told her about how nasty it was. I couldn’t figure out how sand got into the coolant. Seriously though, how the hell Is that not a recall? I’m assuming this must be protocol? Or maybe Dodge doesn’t say anything for fear of a lawsuit. Why are your thoughts?

Wonderful install video. You did a great job. But what is your opinion on this, when you tap into the coolant like the kit provides a t fitting. What exactly is getting filtered here? Isn’t the coolant still flowing straight through the line as it would’ve, only sending a small amount of coolant through the filter, then to the overflow tank? Doesn’t make any sense to me. Looks like the t fittings in the kit belongs in the trash can. In my opinion the kit should tap into the coolant line, flow all the coolant through the filter and then back into the same line. Let me know your opinion on this! Great video!!
@LeftLaneDiesels
@LeftLaneDiesels 3 жыл бұрын
So most coolant filter kits only filter about 10% of your coolant at any given time. There are companies like IPR that make a full flow coolant filter kit that filters 100%. Generally after an oil cooler I like to install the cheaper 10% filter setup. Helps keep things clean but won’t create issues if I forget to change the filter. The ipr kit is great and will most certainly work better, but does require more maintenance. Also after a proper oil cooler install and flush, there shouldn’t be a need to filter 100%.
@craiggerlach5548
@craiggerlach5548 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, was looking for a kit that could filter 100% of the coolant entering heater core to prevent it from being plugged up. when heater starts to blow cooler air, just swap the filter... 10% is by chance you catch what you are after.. has anyone used this type and converted to 100%? I have a kit here wanted to use on my Pontiac to trap some kitty litter a shop tossed into my coolant tank and is plugging my new core.. had just swapped radiator, water pump, thermostat, heater core then shop did this to me.. fluid had been flushed 3 times between all the repairs so it was clean., get alignment and suddenly no heat and things plugging up... happens on that one job just not set up to do myself...

Interesting, I had thought the coolant filters were because of the coolant cooled EGR’s and that if you had an EGR delete you didn’t need one... was unaware of the sand issue, makes me wonder if I should plan on one of these myself.

I'm really curious, what did you do with the lock washers that you forgot to put on the bolts that hold the filter block to the bracket. They are clearly on the bench and not on the bolts. Also you told us you were going to cut an inch out of the heater hose but you didn't. Too busy thinking about the next shot I guess. I believe the filters are mostly used to make sure that as the coolant gets used up and breaks down it starts to form balls of sediment in the coolant. Especially if someone uses the wrong (green) antifreeze in the engine.
@LeftLaneDiesels
@LeftLaneDiesels 4 жыл бұрын
Tim Pedzinski this kit does not come with lock washers. I am aware that many kits do, I do not see any adverse affects of not having them there. Not sure what you “clearly” saw, maybe the lock washer that’s provided to attach the bracket to the truck. Next point, listen closely, I did cut roughly 2 inches out of the heater hose. Maybe you skipped part of the video or you were to worried about commenting about the lock washers. Lastly I can agree with you about the type of coolant going in the these trucks, breaking down and creating scale. I do not recommend green, but I did make a joke about it. However another major part is to filter the sand from the sanding process when the block was made.

Ok so got a question but it’s not directly related to the video, posed it to you and the guys at 6.0 bros as you two seem to be the go to 6.0PS guys here... So had a very strange incident today, typically my truck will hit 110-111 and I get the shut down, today not so much... had an asshole in traffic not letting me over I speed up he speeds up I slow down he slows down, finally I slowed to the point I was doing like 45mph and said screw this... I floored it expecting the bog a black cloud of smoke, then spool and go (I do have a non-vgt after all) which all happened, idiot hits it at the same time and paces me all the way up to what I figured was going to be the limiter but instead my speedo started bouncing like it was doing a test sweep, went back on the other side got stuck at like 35 I finally passed the stroke slowed down a bit it flew back over to the other side after doing like another few test sweeps got locked at 90 while I was slowing down for a few, and then finally returned to reporting actual speed... any ideas? Bad speedo sender or something? Whatever it was my limiter didn’t work because of it I’m sure I probably wasn’t way higher than the limiter but I was definitely over it

Frank White first thing I would do is run a code scan. preferably a higher end scanner that way you can read hidden codes set by the instrument cluster. My instinct tells me that it’s an internal instrument cluster issue, unrelated to the rest of the truck.

listen. these coolant filters are a GIANT scam and waste of time and money. these trucks are anywhere from 16-24 years old, most with around or over 200k miles. if your truck has NEVER had its coolant changed in 16-24 years, you have other problems that needing to "filter" your coolant. additionally, these filters are only filtering a small portion of the coolant, since only the coolant that is going to the heater core is filtered. save your time, save your money, and simply change your engine coolant and flush your system and keep on top of your maintenance. fords service schedule (at least for my 2003) has the coolant changed at 6yrs/100k miles, and then every 45k miles after that. your original coolant should be long gone and hopefully most of the contaminants went with it. keep changing your coolant every 45k miles and you will be fine

Rip that stupid shit out of thier. That coolant filter is just another restriction in the coolant system. If you want to protect your truck flush the coolant every 2 years and use a aftermarket radiator with a cooler thermostat and don't over heat the engine. Deleting the cat helps on getting the hot exhaust air out quicker. It's all about keeping your egt low as possible.
