Best video for rebuilding an alpha one outdrive. I did it wrong the first time with another video. Boat overheated. Tried again with the better parts detail in this video. Now works great!

Very well done. Direct and to the point. I like this way of explaining. So many on you tube tell me what they are going to do first then do it. Thanks for skipping that part. I usually fast forward through that. You also have a very good way of explaining it

I am glad I watched this, even though I have done this job many times that o ring at the top was always a pain. So it is not going to be installed this time, thanks for sharing this excellent video.

ZOOM OUT!!! Your camera person is way too close. Otherwise, fantastic. Just did this service on my Alpha One. I replaced the drive shaft o-ring, perhaps I will pull it apart again and remove it. The old o-ring came apart and pieces of the o-ring remaining in the female part of the drive shaft. It took me a few hours (seriously) to figure out why I couldn't get the outdrive back together. Very frustrating. Also, I think my "water pocket cover" housing is leaking. I have limited water flow to the engine, and everything else seems to be fine. This is the first place I have ever heard it mentioned, so thank you for that!

Great video and job. We should note that the shifter should be in FORWARD before removing the drive. Also more emphasis on the shaft position to replace the drive.

You can do it in any gear, but it will be easier in forward when the drive is trimmed full up.

The stainless steel plate just drops on. The plastic base itself is a little tight, but it has an 'O' ring. Just use a couple of screwdrivers and pry it up. Only remove it if you intend replace it or the 2 seals in the bottom...

Good video. I bought an 87 rinker and put it in the water last Sunday without much trouble. I had a power steering leak that I worked on during the week as well as a few tinkerings. I saw that it had a closed cooling system but didn't understand that it required raw water in a heat exchange system. I thought it was strange that it could cool without a radiator. Well there's a reason I fully understand the cooling system now. She got a little warm today. And now I know that when your tinkering, never run it without water for even a few seconds. Can you guess what I'm doing this week?

I'm changing mine and when I removed my upper and lower the slinger seal stayed in the upper unit and I couldn't get it out. Is this okay to leave in?What could happen if it's not okay?

Holy SNIKIES !!! Thank you 🙏 for this video. I had a impeller that had scored up the shaft when it melted down . It was a real son of a bitch to get remedied . After sanding the shaft down to 1000 grit and easing everything back together I ALMOST stabbed her without doing the clock wise counter

Hi, thanks for the video, can you clarify, I left my shifter in forward gear before dismantle, so to make sure the shifter spline is correct, you said to turn it counterclockwise until propeller locks. You sounded unsure. I really need to know, because I was fiddling with that shifter spline. Thanks

Chris, I am doing my impeller this weekend. I am not taking the drive off the boat. Do I still have to out the drive in forward gear (standard rotation) or can I just leave it in neutral. Thanks for the videos, very informative and detailed.

the O ring is above the seal ,I cant imagine what it would be for
@chrisa660
@chrisa660 4 жыл бұрын
The idea was for the O ring to seal the cavity where the splines are should the seal fail. But all it did was interfere with the seal as it went in, and cause the seal to fail, and then fail to stop water getting into the splines. Another fine example of Merc engineers overthinking a problem, and creating a solution that was worse than the problem (that didn't exist)....

Great video Chris and so easy to follow. I have a question as I am replacing all parts from a major overheat. When I took the lower pump housing off it seemed that the drive shaft had a lot of back & forth play. Is this normal? Your help is greatly appreciated. I sure hope you get this message and can get back to me. I am ready to install all new pump parts.

If you have an MC-1 or 'R' drive, push down on the drive shaft and check to see if there's still any lateral movement. If it's an MR or Alpha One, then you need to lift the drive shaft. To know the difference, look at the top of the shaft. If it's got a preload pin, it's MC1 or R....

These videos are for instructional purposes only. If you have a problem that is not covered in one of my videos, please visit a marine mechanic or a forum (iBoats is a good one) and post your problem for help there. As much as I would like to help people on an individual basis, I just don't have the time.

Someone needs to show which way the water pickup tube bushing goes into the impeller housing...Meaning does the soft part of the bushing face down or upward?

Anthony Grasso As confirmation, the later drive-shafts don't even have an 'O' ring groove.

But on other videos (and this one also I think) this will cause the splines to rust, as well as help keep water out of the upper unit. Which is another reason to grease the splines heavily.

do you need to remove the gear oil to replace the impeller?
@Condor1970
@Condor1970 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, you do. When you remove the lower, it opens up the gear oil passage from top to bottom. You must drain the gear oil first. Otherwise you'll have a huge mess on your hands.

I am working on a drive that someone else poorly worked on, and this is my fist time on an outdrive. Previously whoever took it apart, not replacing the exhaust seal above the top of the impeller housing. I see you are attempting to remove the top impeller housing and you show a" rest of the o-ring that was damaged by, this is the rest of the seal that was in the bottom housing- the rest of it there, that is the one I flicked out of the top housing..." This part is crucially important to me and your statement is confusing. Don't man to sound like a dick, but I appreciate your video but unfortunately something as simple as what you take for granted can be costly and very frustrating for someone as articulate as me. You call the seal above the housing a "Water slinger", while others call it an exhaust seal. Does it really sling water? I really appreciate your advice on the upper housing, where you advise if the key has been moved r any sign of overheating you must replace the housing. I can't seem to find a video that takes it any farther than the bottom of the upper impeller housing. ( but as anal as I am don't you think I would by a book?! That would cut into my drug habit- that's why I rely on youtube videos! ;^)
@chrisa660

'The rest of the seal'... At 2:18 I refer to a seal that was destroyed because the 'O' ring was fitted to the top of the driveshaft. The seal outer housing was left in the top housing (the bit I flicked out), the rest of the seal fell down the shaft and stopped on top of the slinger. I call it a water sling because that's what Merc call it. (refer Merc genuine manual #4, section 3B, page 2). Most of the time we don't pull the water pump base unless it needs replacing, and that's not too often, hence you're not finding a lot of videos refering to it.
