@@tedsmarinerepair8956 Your welcome Ted thanks again for all these great videos. Hey did you get a chance and listen to that knocking sound I have with my Merc. If not here it is, tell me what you think it could be, Sterndrive was removed after the video and still had same knocking sound. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9CEmrWom8nDooU.html

@Arcturian1111 yes, not good, sounds internal. But remove the alternator belt and start it, could be a failed alternator bearing. Best of luck!

Best video I have seen 🎉👍 I’m 70 years old and haven’t done this for 5 years and I needed a refresher 😂 thanks for Sharing Your Experience! I’m ready to reassemble the pump and base. I DO HAVE A QUESTION . I pulled the lower unit with out being in forward gear. Should I put it in forward before I reinstall it.
@tedsmarinerepair895611 ай бұрын
You can shift the lower and upper into forward prior to reassembly, easier to line up the driveshaft splines upon reassembly. Thanks for the positive feedback!

@@tedsmarinerepair8956 Ted could you explain the steps to reinstalling the gear housing , the shifter needs to be in the forward pos ,and any other parts I need to set ? before i bolt it together ,does the shift lever need to be also set? thks Randy
@tedsmarinerepair8956 Жыл бұрын
@@randybegins7535 you should ensure the little seal is in place between the two halves is in place, check the water tube is in place and the rubber seals it fits into are in good shape. Shift the lower into forward while rotating the prop counter-clockwise, it should lock when in forward. Place the shift lever facing forward and put the upper on the lower, rotate the input yoke clockwise to line of the splines. They are together, ensure the drive locks in forward when you move the shift lever straight ahead

This was an amazing video- thanks! At the top of the shaft, just below the splines is a groove for an O-ring. I see yours did not have the O-ring when you took it apart, and you don't mention putting one on when you put it back together. I have heard it is not necessary. Is that correct?
@tedsmarinerepair8956 Жыл бұрын
It is an additional seal that you should put on the shaft, it was likely stuck in the upper when it came apart. Good catch!
@richardrumplik702311 ай бұрын
I did remember to look for it in th upper unit and sure enough it was up there any torn. I just grabbed it and pulled it out and put my new one on the shaft . Good catch I thought the same thing lol. But I Didn’t want to criticize the FREE ADVICE, I also think he should include replacing the base of the pump. The seal on it is important to not leak and let water into the gear lubricant.

Thanks so much for this video very helpful. I followed your steps and got everything apart and replaced no problem. I had a very difficult time putting the lower unit back on. I finally got it on, filled with oil and went to test start it. and my shifter would not move back to neutral. It was in the full forward position during the entire time. I do not recall moving the gear spline etc. Any suggestions. I'm probably going to pull the lower unit again tomorrow and try again.

Did you shift the drive into forward before installing it?

My new impeller ID is 0.882 while old one is 0.875 so new one does not snug on the shaft well and it has a play. Is that ok or my made in China kit not the best quality but still ok to install?
@tedsmarinerepair8956 Жыл бұрын
Not too concerning. I've seen impellers with a good amount of play.

I'm in the middle of this task, any words on how much vertical travel on that intermediate (not propshaft) shaft... shaft that impeller slides over...I have mine apart and it seems to have quite a lot of vertical travel. Does this shaft require a pre load 🤔
@tedsmarinerepair89562 жыл бұрын
If it has a pre-load pin (old "R" drive) than it will have a little up and down play, the pin pushed it down into the bearing. There should be very little play in the newer Alpha drives due the gears are cut to apply upward pressure on the vertical drive shaft.
