Every 15 self-help books, there’s always one that punches my ego in the face, forces me into deep introspection, and then pushes through this Damon 2.0 version of myself. I'm here to share that list.

Your ex made some points! Most self help books could be reduced to half of their length cause they get very repetitive. They usually have two or three points they want to get across and then just write and write and wriiiite chapters around them. Still, there's some life lessons in there!

okay, so I agree that most of self-help books can be reduced to some bullet points, BUT the point of those books IS to be repetitive and to tell you the same thing over and over and OVER again, so that it'll finally kick into you. If you just read a small article with a few points of what you should do to help yourself, you're most likely gonna forget about those in a few hours/days, but reading the same concept during a long period of time is gonna make that idea stick into your head Sorry if this sounded aggressive - I've got love/hate relationship with self-help books too, but they really got me through some dark times in my life, when I was 14, 19 and 23 - don't underestimate those.
@carlie9584
@carlie9584 3 жыл бұрын
i completely agree! different people understand different ways of saying something so hearing a concept explained 3-5 different ways you have a better chance of it "clicking" eventually.. i guess some people just get it the first try and thats why they deem the book too repetitive.
@Nikatronixx
@Nikatronixx 3 жыл бұрын
@@carlie9584 this is very true! I'll read a version of a self-help book and practice what I read for a few months, then something bad happens that causes me to revert back to my old ways of reacting and my brain "forgets" the progress I made. And so I gravitate towards another self-help book. We NEED a bunch of self-help books saying the same thing- it's the only way we will [eventually] learn.

between lesbians around here is quite often, tbh. You can even see exes going out on double date with other exes (I think I made it a bit confusing). From my own experience, all the women I dated I have them as friends, some not so close anymore, but for life reasons. My longest relationship lasted around 6/7 years and we're kinda close friends for 11 -we broke up almost 4/5 years ago.

i think what his ex meant when talking about how self help books have a distinct stylist way of explaining and describing our emotions, is that after reading several of these books, the authenticity becomes watered down. they all sound the same even when discussing very different topics. however, that doesn't they're lying because these books can be comforting, relatable and educational. i don't love the cheesiness but i don't know how conversations like this can be anything but repetitive and cheesy, whilst still being impactful and introspective.
@MariannesStudio

10:55 to anyone interested in existentialism i’d highly suggest you read the book “at the existentialist café” by sarah bakewell. it’s more of a biography/philosophy overview than a self-help book however it helped me understand some of the key concepts that philosophers who first introduced this school of thought discussed in their works and that alone served as sort of an epiphany and completely changed my way of understanding life. also, one type of therapy in psychology was based on existentialism and there’s a great book by one of the leading existential therapist - irvin d. yalom, called “when nietzsche wept” which, even tho it’s a fictional novel, also presents main ideas of existentialism in a super interesting way so i highly recommend that one as well!! okay that’s all, have a nice day ❤️

Damon's ex's got a point tho. Like in cognitive science we say cognitive affordance is almost always something to celebrate because some non semantic knowledge like these life advice are not meant to be learnt the easy way. Maybe you feel like you get something out of that book, but most of the time it's only because you already have that lesson in your subconsciousness. Or think about learning how to swim by reading a book instead of getting into the water, but only even more difficult.

You're spot on. The best manifestation for the things you want in life is to just do you, focus on you, and think about how to treat YOU better. Then everything else falls in place and the people that truly belong in your life are a part of your journey. Not the people that want to set THEIR standard/version of you. Seriously love the insight you give us all in your content. 🖤

b mil ppl definitely do this maybe damon but i feel like he does it more to hide his ex's identity? probably bc the ex doesn't want ppl in his business or something like that, i don't think damon wants to shame him every time he says ex it's probably more of a privacy thing

There’s this book called the “Geography of Bliss” I recommend it. It’s not really a self help book but this guy goes to different places and understands different countries view on happiness (or unhappiness) and their purpose in life. “To be a good ancestor.” Always stuck with me. Hope you read this comment and I hope you pick up the book. :)

Always here for a Damon video! Lately I've had this bad habit of skipping through videos and not watching the whole thing. However, with Damon's videos I am able to just sit down, watch, and be engaged. It's quite refreshing. I'm also not much of a reader, but being present while watching the video made me really want to hear him out and now I have a lovely list of books to eventually read! Thank you Damon! and I hope everyone is staying safe

TLDR: existentialism is crippling for some of us. i agree with X on that existential book like I have OCD and anxiety so when these questions enter my head they usually end up with me having a mental breakdown coz my brain can't let shit go. If I can't find the answer then the question is going to keep going in my head and that has happened too many times in quarantine coz life is very uncertain at the moment. ( i have video about all the questions i feel occupied by on my channel, i think its called im 17 or something i dont remember) i dont know where im going with this but i think its kinda weird to romanticize existentialism. those french dudes were not having fun when they became existentialists.
