Yep. Brand new to the caravan world this week and I certainly found some of those tips useful, particularly the blocks that I didn't even think about. Now you have mentioned it, it is (of course) obvious, but not until you know. REALLY good video.

Better tips than many I've seen from so-called experienced vanners, I would never have thought of pads on step legs. On pegging out, when we moved from tents to a caravan seven years ago we had a load of rock pegs already, which you absolutely need on hard standing. I moved from these to screw-in pegs since we had a cordless drill for the steadies, which I hammer in then, when breaking camp, screw out. I agree that thee tops can tangle with the ladders but find a thumb on the plastic tops prevents this. Since we use a full awning and twenty pegs, I find this method works best for me (tip - a dab of WD-40 really helps). Completely agree about the pathetic mallets camping shops seem to think adequate, a blooming good thumping is what hard standing needs.

Cheers Steve... these were just a few tips we found helped us out when started a few years back. I guess as the years pass we find what works best but I did like to try other peoples ideas. I just found the screw in pegs a pain in the... well you know what. The lump hammer is a must.

I use a lump hammer. If you screw a decent hook into the end of the handle as well it makes a great peg puller as well. 😀😀

Another great video Ian. We only invested in lump hammer at Easter as rubber one no good with rock pegs. I get the the kids involved and they do the legs up and down and for the awning rail we have a silicon spray at like you say the awning glides through the rail. 👍

Some great tips there Ian, liking the pads on the step, will be doing that one. I’ve never used a rubber mallet as they haven’t got the weight needed for rock pegs. I use a claw hammer so I can get them back out with the claw. Cheers Martin 🙂

The step idea is brilliant. We used to have the metal ones and yes found they sink into the ground, so we now have a big foot plastic step, but adding feet to the steps is a great solution.

Hi Ian, thanks for the idea for caravan step feet, I have done this to our steps, though I used small plastic pipes to keep the feet in one place and keep step leg in the middle of the feet, also used split pins and washers instead of R clips so as not to catch our toes on the protruding ends of the R clips, works really well, thanks for the idea we are very glad that you showed this.

Hi Ian and Clare, like you I learned the long hard way, so great you have put this together. I upgraded to the Milenco double step which was more safe and secure and obviously doesn't rust but so pleased with it although I had to screw a rubber door mat to the steps as the dogs wouldn't use it. I would thoroughly recommend the step. Just another tip, play with the torque settings on your drill as it makes it even quicker and will not over stress the steady thread. Keep them coming...

Use silicone spray, not WD40 in the awning rail. You don’t want oil stains on your awning and silicone will let your awning slide through easier

Hi there just come across your vlog some useful tips.one thing i would say is dont use wd40 anywhere ,its a water displacement as in wd,better with a silicone lubricant.i use this in the rail and it works really well.also use it on our security locks.hope thats a useful tip.

For the drill to the stabiliser legs, BE CAREFUL. Use the drill for 90% of the work and finish off with the hand tool. Drills can make the gearing inside the wind up mechanism shatter. Otherwise it is a good idea :) use the drill till weight is applied then finish with the handtool

With the drill as a leg winder it’s worth noting that when you use it make sure it’s on scerw setting not drill as if on drill setting when it gets to the end the drill will wip round and will possibly brake your wrist and end your holiday as if on scerw setting it clutches on the chuck thus saves your wrist just saying throu experience myself

Have you come across the problem with your caravan steps that if it rains and you haven't put up the awning the two platforms that are covered in rubber actually hold water, ours do as we have our caravan at home hooked up to the electricity and all services so steps are in use not stores away. So I was having earache from my wife Jan and got the drill out with a 3mm HSS drill bit and made random holes with out taking the strength away to allow the rainwater to drain away, now an easylife no earache
@ForTheLoveOfCaravans

Yeah... I never thought of drilling holes. Will do that. I always flip them over before I put them in the van. They do need replacing really. They are a bit rusty and a bit coroded underneath. Time for some new ones.
