So, rather than edit out the mistakes (and learning) situations. I decided to include this entire video.
Thankfully, it rained just a few hours after I nearly destroyed the corn. The rain healed this mistake and now (nearly a month later), we are just about ready to harvest the corn

There are many things you can change to keep your crop safe one thing I believe you can buy sweeps that only have a wing on one side only , Tim also mentioned that the tines could be moved to the front tool bar, Happy gardening.

Tim kind of curious how much space did you have between the two closest sweeps? I mean you were not tearing the the corn out seemed ok what was the issue. I"m going to be using a cultivator my self this year as the tiller is about on its last legs and due to a bad back rather not stand behind a tiller if I can sit and drive a tractor.
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 8 жыл бұрын
+mrelectron62 I'm not exactly sure now. However, I can tell you they were too close, especially to be mounted so far back from the rear tractor wheels. It DID in fact cut some of the corn off at the roots due to being too close to the rows. I replanted it, and thankfully, it rained within a couple of hours, saving the corn. If you make your own, be sure to put the closest to the row sweeps at the front, as close to the rear tires as possible. One other approach is the disk hiller like I used in the "Hilling Potatoes and Corn" video. This approach worked much better for me. You can buy a cultivator - King Kutter brand. You will see lots of them on craigslist for $100 or so.

Tractor Time with Tim Thanks Tim, I kind of figured by now you would not have that info but was curious. Thats exacty what I did got cultivator off of Craigs list and cleaned it up and added some sweeps. I have about 10'' between the two closest inside sweeps I guess it will be some trial and err hopfully not too much err lol. I liked the set up you had with the hillers may see later if I can add some thing like that to this one. Enjoy your videos and thanks for the fast response.

Yeh farken weeds, never needing nightmare, I’ve got a similar implement to do the same but I’ve got smaller blades on the tines only 25mm wide, they won’t catch the roots. I box blade and rake the tracks between my rows, try to minimise herbicide use as much as possible

I have a similar set up except I use "Fixed" cultivator shafts with sweep's ( 54 deg) For the first cultivation or two I use 16". Then as the plants grow I switch out for 14's. Cultivating is a shallow process as the goal is to go just deep enough to cut the shallow roots of the weed's and grass and not deep enough to cut the root's of the corn/bean's etc. I do not use sweeps for "Hilled" plants like Potatoes. I use 14" hiller disc to bury the weeds as they emerge. You have to experiment with your own soil and conditions.

Some of the veggies look like they could use some composted manure and some Miracle Grow. My dad would take gallon milk jugs, cut out the bottom and stick the spout in the ground next to a plant. He could mix up the Miracle Grow and pour it in the jug. It would slow deliver to the plant and he could water them.

Your not plowing it if you were plowing it you would be digging the dirt up and flipping it over and if you were to do that to your corn all you would have left would be black dirt only no corn just a friendly tip. Take it from a farmer how farms about 600 acres
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting. My dad almost always referred to row-crop cutlivating as "plowing corn" or "plowing beans". He always called the cultivator a "cultivator", so, the slang didn't go that far. So, terminology may vary from one region to another. ...and yes, he farms 2000+ acres. ..some of which Christy and I own. Appreciate you watching our videos. ...but please be careful with the attitude in your comments. Thanks.

One other aspect of this video which makes it 'special' for us. This is our very first tractor video. We published for Katriel's grandparents, never expecting anyone else to watch it. We didn't edit it at all. This was straight off the camera. I know this is more of a reply than you likely expected. ...but I just wanted to give a bit of background to this particular video.
