Tasting notes for Suntory Hibiki 21YO 43%abv
Nose: An extremely rich bouquet; Seville oranges, bananas, liquorice, Egyptian dates, polished leather, oak, apricot conserve, brandy snaps, nutmeg, vanilla slice, cigar leaf, orange coffee.
Palate: Smooth and creamy to start; then a big dollop of sweet spices, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, liquorice. More of the Seville oranges plus white plums, lychees, honeydew melon, nougat, praline, leather and sweet cigar leaf. Complex, oily, mouth coating and full bodied.
Finish: Long, with liquorice, cantaloupe, cigar leaf, vanilla, nougat, butter, peanut brittle and well-judged oak. The oiliness clings to the palate. After some time, a fine envelope of smoke appears.
Last Word: A truly sophisticated, beautifully crafted world class blend. A blend that I could not recommend more highly if you have the means.

Great notes, Brian, and to think I could get it for 250 € but did hesitate at that time (a decade ago) because it was still some money for me (beyond anything I bought so far even nowadays), and also because of batch variations, but when the batch was good, it was becoming a phenomenal experience, and for me quite different from the 17 yo for instance, more interesting too I'd even dare to say.... Like best batches of Yamazaki 18 yo compared to the 12...Kampaï !

Thanks for adding your opinion Greg : ). I've found more batch variation with the 17YO compared to the 21YO which I've found always on point. Yama 18 is an excellent example of batch variation but I would compare it to Hakushu 18, which to me is rock solid and my preference between the 2. Kampai Brian
