The most important thing to master as a healer is when to fit in a full snack emote between heals. Healing is hungry work.
@CaetsuChaijiCh
@CaetsuChaijiCh 10 ай бұрын
That is certainly difficult! Sometimes when fights aren't going crazy, I could eat something while spamming glare, but a snack emote ingame?! Thats a different level of difficulty entirely!

Thank you for mentioning "wherever the corpses are". That is an information I usually don't see, neither in other guides nor in the wiki. I once was in P7N with 4 players down. I used my LB3 while the platforms were separated. I saw 3 players die immediately and wondered what attack hit them. Only later I realized I rezzed them above the void.

You can't imagine how much of a stroke of luck it was that I got footage of both needing lb3, and that that specific situation happened to occur 😊 I hope the direct demonstration will help many healers with this weird quirk of the limit break! Thank you for sharing your story as well! 😄

I only ever healed in dungeons but yesterday I tried doing Unreal as WHM and I gotta say, it took a few pulls for me to get used to using _all_ the tools in my toolbox, where usually just Lily heals and the odd regen were enough. It was surprisingly fun!

Preach to the emphasis at 7:08 I dislike the guides that apply all emphasis on "never gcd heal, always always damage" as I truly think that's an awful thing to teach new healers. I get the sentiment, I also get annoyed at the healers casting cure 1 on a tank at 99.7% health and doing no damage -- but so many times I see the other end of the spectrum where they'd rather someone die than spend a gcd on healing.... And guess what now they're spending a gcd on res and that person has now lost far more damage than the healer contributed I'm just glad someone's accentuating this in a guide; generally speaking the people looking for a guide are *not* the people confident enough to never use a gcd heal. Not to say they won't in the future but I've never agreed with the guides saying that's the only way to play healer
@CaetsuChaijiCh
@CaetsuChaijiCh 10 ай бұрын
Exactly! If someone dies, not only do you now have to raise them, but when they get back up, you still are low on healing cooldowns so now you probably HAVE to use cure 2, so now you spent 2 gcds, plus all the gcds the dead player lost and so on! 😅 And you are absolutely right. Some of the things I might say in this guide (or other healer guides of mine) may sometimes be a little extra safe or suggest less aggressive strategies, but that is specifically because the healer mains that are confident enough to go full blast, have learned when it is safe and when it isn't, so they can take a more nuanced approach 😁

I always tell new healers to get plenty of practice with weaving. Practicing over and over on a training dummy, practicing in dungeons and trials etc, will let you tackle the harder content that much easier. Its worth the time investment. If you are a console player (bless your heart) spend a lot of time setting up your hotbars in a way that is intuitive to you and allows you to easily weave. For any healer, get tons of practice with swiftly targeting party members. Whether you use specific tab targeting settings, or you click party names, this is a mark of difference between a decent healer and a good healer. Reaction time is king. Any amount of "unplanned" healing will require certain reaction times, ranging from split seconds to half minutes to deal with. Part of that is in knowledge of the fight you are in, but another part of it is simply in your awareness of damage landing on the party and how long certain things take to actually trigger. (Reference, SCH fairy abilities which get queued and take about 1 GCD to actually trigger) Finally, damage is important. But if your split second thought is "I think i can get another dmg spell in before needing to heal," then you heal. Unless you KNOW you can get it done, 100%, you should always revert to healing. Ive seen plenty of wipes because healers kept casting dmg, hell ive even been the cause of it, instead of just putting out a heal/shield/some ability usage.

@@Quantum_Bluntz yes. You can have tab targeting work on closest or party list order, for example. It's a bit of work but you can make tab target target party members instead of enemies.
@halosaft
@halosaft Ай бұрын
@@Quantum_Bluntz You can also change button layout however you want. So by default, clicking L3 is lock-on, I have *never* used this (on purpose) so I changed my L3 to be Assist Targeting. Meaning if I click L3, I target the target of my target. That's a convoluted way of saying L3 now lets me switch between targeting the boss and the tank with the simple click of one button. Now as I'm typing this, I'm thinking I might switch L3 and R3, so I have R3 as Assist Targeting when I get home. So it's easier for me to move around with the L stick and use Assist Targeting at the same time.

I just returned to the game a few weeks ago after being away for two years. Just finished HW yesterday. Exciting. My main is a WHM. I have been doing dungeons to learn how to heal again, and it's scary. It's fun. Like, I enjoy healing more than anything, but it's scary. When shit hits the fan, I often find myself panicking a little and forgetting how or what to cast. I fumble a lot. I play with a controller. Also, I have no idea what any tanks skills are. Playing 100% reactively. One day I'll get better, but it feels like I have too much to learn. So yeah, scary, but fun.

Welcome back to the game! Great that you are enjoying healing! 😄 Each tank is very different and have a lot of tools, so my best suggestions is either looking up each tank to see what they have, or try tanking yourself! Naturally you don't need to play a tank to be an effective healer, especially not while you are still progressing through the main quest. But one day it might be worth a try! 😊

A healing guide from a content creator that isn't downright wrong on major aspects? Shocking. And a pleasant surprise. My only real quibble is with excog use. I don't think it's necessarily bad to use outside of combat. The earlier you use it, the sooner it comes off CD again, which could net you an extra use in the upcoming pull. While it might seem like using it too early could be a detriment, it will often net more healing overall. Great beginner guide overall, though. Really nice to see.
@CaetsuChaijiCh
@CaetsuChaijiCh 10 ай бұрын
Thank you! ^^ Yeah the Excog tip is mostly because if you are still learning as a Scholar, it might be better to focus on a strict system, and some scholars don't even realize that the Faerie Gauge is not given if you use it before engaging combat. If you have full Faerie Gauge for example, then using Excog during combat is equal to using it early. What exactly is best can depend on the situation, but if you are still learning, it can be difficult to know when it is better to use it early, and when it is better to wait, so focusing on generating the extra resources in the faerie gauge to have more tools in case you need it is a good starting point I think! But yes just to reiterate: Whether Excog should be used asap or once you enter combat ultimately can depend on the specific situation!

another very important thing about LB3 is that if someone falls down their corpse takes a bit to re-appear, so if you LB3 right before it happens they will NOT be rezed at all (very funny to see in P10 normal after a harrowing hell gone wrong) also applies to normal rezes. don't be like me, immediately clicking swift to raise someone just to have to not do anything for 1-2 GCDs while I wait for their corpse to re-appear.

also, thank you so so much for encouraging healers to *ask* to pull more. I have faith in my tanking skills, but I do not want to force my faith in *my* abilities onto others and force a healer or new dps to deal with an aggressive pull, and a healer turning around and just forcing a bigger pull rather than communicating just makes me lose *more* faith in my healer, rather than gaining more confidence in their abilities.

Really new sprout here, sorry if this story seems too prosaic lol I over leveled my main (DPS) while doing MSQ and then I decided to level up my WHM to do MSQ until I reach the point in the story where of my SMN level is at. It was fun in the beginning (the job quests teach you very well) but started to get a bit stressful from level 40 onwards. Had some troubles in DF. I struggled to keep up with some tanks with my Sprint and when nobody in the team had Peloton (and the tanks got mad at me when I couldn't reach them in time and we wiped), people mad that I wasn't doing DPS enough, squishy tanks that go to 20% HP in one second if I'm not healing them nonstop... Kinda discouraged me of continuing after I reached 50. Considering to even level another DPS class since it feels more fun due to less responsibility. But I still clicked this video, who knows.

The level 40 range can be brutal because unless you go and grab more gear intentionally, you can easily end up being heavily under geared for the content, and the level 40-47 dungeons stone vigil, dzemael dark hold and aurum vale are all some of the most brutal dungeons in the game due to the combination of gear and actions you have access to. The under gearing factor means that even if you have done everything you can do, the tank might be severely under geared, and it isn't uncommon in some of these dungeons for tanks to pull too much (blindly doing wall to wall pulls not realizing the danger), and the ones that immediately jump to blame the healer also tend to be more likely to forget to look at their own situation 😅 What I mean to say is that you might have been unlucky with groups! For example, unless EVERYONE in the group are solid and prepared, pulling more than 2 packs at a time in stone vigil can be a wipe. In dzemael dark hold there are multiple trap packs, such as the area with toads where the fish mob can increase the damage the tank takes. And aurum vale has the chaos of the first room, and the first boss requiring people to stop attacking and eat a fruit to not overwhelm the healer. Dzemael dark hold also has a particular mechanic in the first third of it, that standing in crystal light makes you nigh invincible, so your tank might run away from you to reach these spots! I am confident you can catch up. The best advice I can give you is try to see if you can get some gear upgrades, and then review if there is something you are forgetting! I have starter guides for all the healers on my channel in case that might help you! And then simply, jump back into it. Not all tanks are mean... At least I hope not! 😅 I hope at least some of this can help you back in the healing game!

So coming over from a WoW player who's gotten used to tanking and dps so far in FFXIV. The main issue for me and healing is how do you guys do mouseover macros or keybindings in FFXIV? I'm so used to just having mouseovers onto my party frames from WoW that having to click a player and click the spell has me alarmed that it won't be a fast enough reaction time. Also what's a good form of content to do to try and get my feet wet as a healer?
@CaetsuChaijiCh
@CaetsuChaijiCh 10 ай бұрын
For the vast VAST majority of buttons you should never use macros at all in ffxiv. The reason for this is that to put it simply, macros do not have spell queueing (the feature that both wow and ffxiv has that allows you to press a button a bit too early and the action still happens on time). Ffxiv has spell queueing for over half a second, and with a perfectly set up macro, the best you can get is ~13 frames of spell queueing (meaning higher fps = less time) For this reason, if you macro for example cure 2, the probability that it will clip or delay your gcd every time you use it is much greater than if you do it non macro. I also came from wow myself and the fact that the gcd is a full 2.5 seconds always gives me plenty of time to switch targets between actions 😊 For learning healer i recommend doing dungeons, the big wall to wall pulls tend to be a strong test of your ability to use your toolkit to it's full capacity. The bosses in between give you an idea of how to deal with big single target encounters as well, so for practicing the role in general, dungeons are great! I hope this helps! 😊

As a SGE main, I always have a set rotation for every leg of the two wall-to-wall pulls from boss to boss. Knowing what buttons to press and when makes using Dyskrasia more accessible, because letting tanks get low as a SGE is just a bad time since SGEs are terrible at getting a low HP tank back up. Druchole isn't enough, and you can't eat through addersgall too much because Kerachole and Taurochole already take up two for the pull. Thank goodness for Rhizomata. Which means you have to spend a GCD on healing which should never happen. If this happens, you're doing it wrong.The point being treating shield healers like pure healers leads to bad dungeon experiences, don't do it. Let the WHM and AST play limbo with the tank's HP and be willy-nilly. You need to come in with a healing plan if you want to succeed as a shield healer.

I feel like I improved a lot as a healer when I started playing as tank, since I started understanding how good my tanks were and how low I could keep their hp before I had to heal them. As a an added question: for white mages, is it truly okay to just holy spam mobs in a dungeon? I fear stunning enemies might "waste" the tank's mitigation skill (especially arm's lenght) and that the stun resist might prove counter productive in case there are mobs that might need to be stunned. Because of this I mostly stick to aero and stone, but I'm not sure... Also, I was once told "If the tank dies, it's the healer's fault. If a DPS dies, it's either the tank or the DPS's fault". I don't think this is strictly true, but found it funny anyways. English is not my native language, so any correction is greatly appreciated!
@CaetsuChaijiCh
@CaetsuChaijiCh 10 ай бұрын
Indeed! Playing the other roles is also a great way to learn to understand how they think, which makes you better at your job! 😊 To your questions! An unfortunate side effect of holy stunning the enemies is that it removes the tanks' ability to use a stun in a tactical way - if they happen to be a tank that uses stuns like this. However, once the pull has reached a stand still (step 3, finishing the pull), you dealing as much damage as you can will end the fight sooner, which means your tank will need fewer cooldowns to survive. If the tank is attentive, then they realize you are a white mage so if they mind the "wasted mitigation" angle, they would intentionally hold back on their cooldowns expecting your stuns 😊 you HAVE to stun to do damage, there is no way around it. While the tank is still rounding up enemies however, I recommend sticking to aero and stone, as using holy at that time will make things difficult 😅 Unless someone dies from an obvious reason, who is to blame for a death is difficult to explain. If the tank wasn't using their defensives properly, and they die, then it isn't necessarily the healers fault. In a reasonable group, it isn't about figuring out who's to blame, but rather what the group as a whole can do different or better to avoid it happening again. To pose a thoughtful example, if your tank does a big wall to wall pull, but both dps happen to be either flat out afk, or just doing extremely poor damage. The tank uses their defensives to the best of their ability, you use your healing to the best of your ability, but somehow, the enemies overwhelm you because the fight goes on for so long you both run out of options, and your tank dies. Whose fault is it? 😊 You could argue that the tank is to blame for pulling more than the group could handle, or the DPS are to blame for playing poorly. Ultimately, you probably couldn't have done anything differently. But pointing fingers doesn't help anyone, and figuring out what to do different to succeed in that moment is ultimately what is going to resolve the situation 😄 I hope this makes sense! 😊

Honestly the best bet is to just communicate. If a tank says "I'm going to invuln the next pack" do NOT holy spam because it completely wastes a 3-5 minute cool down. Cooldowns should have higher priority than GCDs like holy, since getting them on cool down sooner gets more value out of them. As a tank, I can't trust that a WHM will holy spam if they don't communicate, so I assume I will need to use my standard cool down rotation because I've been burned by the number of white mages that just panic heal instead of spamming holy. But then I've been burned by situations where I've used arms length and rampart (or worse, an invuln) on a particularly nasty pull only to have the WHM holy spam through it and waste those big cool downs.

@CaetsuChaijiCh 10 ай бұрын
I disagree on that Scerttle. If the tank using invuln on a pack of, say 6 mobs, mean the healer has to not use holy for 10 seconds, that's equivalent to around 4-5 holy casts, and that is worth 3600-4500 potency worth of damage. Both the tank and the healer have plenty of defensive cooldowns such that the tank doesn't need the full value of their invuln to make it through, just like the white mage itself doesn't need the value of the stuns to keep the tank alive. Ultimately, if the tank says they re going to invuln, then I will expect the tank to be aware enough to pay attention to what kind of healer he has with him, as white mage has to stun to do aoe damage, and the whole point and benefit of the invuln is to give the team (including the healer) free uptime on the enemies. If the healer isn't allowed to attack because of that, then it actually ultimately makes the fight slightly longer. Most effective would be for the tank to recognize that the stuns are going to be there, and use their invuln once the stuns end, or it becomes needed (depending on the tank of course). However all of these concerns and issues can be solved by communicating 😊 Edit: naturally, if the tank and healer both want to maximize the value of invuln and stuns but the tank used invuln first, the healer could spread dots, but it is still a dps loss, and a very big one at that, if the enemies don't live the full 30 seconds of the dot 😅

@@CaetsuChaijiCh That's a fair point. If everyone's on the same page then a WHM can go straight into Holy spam and then the tank can invuln after 🤔 I guess I just have general frustration being on both sides of the situation and would love it if people just read party chat lol

One of the things i see with most astrologians, they use horiscope, but then they do not combo it wit a gcd heal makeing the horoscope stronger, they have 10 seconds to do it, and thwy just dont No idea if they read a guide telling them that they shouldnt, but even i got yelled at because i made it a stronger version
@CaetsuChaijiCh
@CaetsuChaijiCh 10 ай бұрын
I think its simply because it takes a GCD to prime it, so it clashes with the idea of having to use all GCDs to attack, which some guides might really focus heavily on. If you have the GCD to spare while the pull is starting, there really is no downside to priming Horoscope in that way, and I recommend it in my guides as well!

I love healing....I'm a SGE/SCH main. I do hate it when new tanks pull way too much and you manage to save the party by the skin of your MP only for the tank to think that they are a god and they should do it again...lol I have actually let tanks die the next time they tried it and kept the rest of the group alive, just to try to slap their ego a bit. I only do this on new tanks who you can tell are trying to do what they see on YT.

Yeah there's the key thing in a tank pulling an amount that matches the skill level they are playing to 😅 if they aren't using many defensives then it can be tough on the healer, and when things go well, it isn't always the healer that gets the praise they deserve 😊

Communicating what you're comfortable with is a far more fun experience than wasting people's time with deaths. The latter is toxic behaviour that is reportable if you do it repetatively. A tank constantly pulling when you've asked them not to is even more toxic, of course. But you should always try communication before bullying.

@@Phoenix-cc7xb For sure. I've been mostly playing healer in roulettes lately and you get some really poor behaviour. But just letting people die isn't the solution.

@@Phoenix-cc7xb Oh yeah, for real. It was kinda hilarious. One time before the castrum rework when it was 8 person, the other healer was afking at the start of the dungeon and I asked "can we do smaller packs? I can't keep up with the heals solo" and got vote kicked. I internally told myself "good luck doing it with zero healers then" lmfao

if you are letting people die by choice, you shouldn't be a healer

Remember if the tank dies and you the healer is casting a dps spell, you're in the wrong and fucked up. Yes i am a healer. And yes there is sadly lots of idiots watching this and don't get it nor wanna take the responsibility. 14:13 should put this first in vid, pref. 2-3 more times in, lots of fake healer get this order backwards. which is why ive given up tanking randoms. 14:43 ya im one of those tanks, you spank it, you tank it. and if you miss use rescue and pull tank further along it is a reportable offense. let them pull what they feel comfortable with, else go tank yourself.
@CaetsuChaijiCh
@CaetsuChaijiCh 10 ай бұрын
I want to highlight that on the off chance some one pulls for a tank by accident, it is equally a reportable offense to intentionally wipe the group as the tank choosing not to spring into action 😅 But I get that you mostly just want people to do their jobs right 😊
@Scerttle
@Scerttle 10 ай бұрын
How do you tell when aggro pull is the DPS fault and not your own, though? It's a DPS job to kill enemies even during a pull. If someone has higher DPS than your ability to keep aggro, that's on you. A DPS shouldn't have to stop DPSing during a pull because you didn't build enough enmity on the initial hit. Letting people die because they drew aggro is also toxic.
@halosaft
@halosaft Ай бұрын
Well, that depends on the situation. If the healer is spamming attacks and the tank dies because they stood in 3 overlapping aoes, getting one hit killed when they could have moved out of the way, then that is the tanks fault. Healers can't heal stupid. Also, being a "you pull, you tank" type of tank is literally a reportable offense. Your job isn't to pull, your job is to tank. Do your job. If a dps or healer is ahead of you and they pull in enemies, go and tank the enemies. If you don't want to tank, play something else.
