I’ve never really tried a structure to it. I just let my thoughts ramble, especially when I feel confused about something.

1. Morning pages (first thing you see or think when waking up). 2. Freestyle aka brain dumping (inner dialogue to deal with anxiety and stress). 3. Bullet journal (organizational system of everything in one book). 4. Unsent letter (help with closure, write to someone not in your life, try writing to future self). 5. One sentence (daily affirmations, quick life update, book list). 6. Gratitude (focus on what you have). I use 2,4, and 6. I'm going to try "night pages" because I find myself getting ideas before I sleep :) Journaling is truly powerful!

I was making the same mistake like you did, when I focused on aesthetics side of bullet journalling, I was stressful that I could not produce a ‘great’ looking journal like everyone else in social media.. I even bought the expensive journal. In the end it became a unenjoyable experience. I abandoned the journalling routine. Until last year when I had anxiety disorder, I started to write daily journal, not thinking anything about template, just write (or draw), and it was liberating, journalling becoming my routine and it was part of my healing. Now I’m adding habit tracker to my journal, monthly focus, and daily to do. It helped to be more mindful in making decision.

Thanks for sharing! It's important to me that I enjoy the journaling experience, so I try to make it as simple as possible. Otherwise, I know I won't be consistent with it. That's great you will be adding a habit tracker. It keeps me focused on my goals :) thank you for watching

I can relate to this soo much! I got kind of frustrated when starting to journal this year, because I always felt like I was not doing it good enough. Seeing this more realistic kind of jouraling definitely gave me a new motivation boost to just journal in whatever style feels good for myself and not trying to reach the „pinterest/instagram aesthetics“.

I am at home with my husband and 3 kids, sometimes I feel so stressed and I loose my temper and meditating, exercising and journaling has been the 3 things that have saved me since this crisis begun. I love what you said about journaling being our time to be ourselves, a time to say everything we think and feel just the way it is. Thank you Sophie for this wonderful video, I will keep on journaling and I will use some of this new techniques you said, blessings to you, Cristina

1. Morning Pages - 2:23 2. Free Style - 3:47 3. Bullet Journal - 5:38 4. Unsent Letter - 8:22 5. One Sentence - 10:00 6. Gratitude - 10:52 I just learned about Morning Pages. I feel like this would take me FOREVER to do. 😂 I usually "free style" it but more importantly I make use of templates in a digital journal called Day One Journal. Ive recently been very intrigued with Bullet Journaling but my concern is that it would feel like work. I have played around with the Gratitude journal off and on. I find that if I make use of mindful practices throughout the day, it provides a similar experience and output as it does to consistently make use of the gratitude journal method.

Journaling has been part of my life since I was a child. Like you,my content has obviously evolved but it has always been my true expression, has helped me through some harder times, always kept me goal focused and inspired. I think everyone should do it! I like the ideas/layout of how u do yours! And yes I have wrote to myself,it was one of the most empowering things I ever did. I wrote to myself remember who I was as a child, the character I was,who I have become,I reflected on a lot and found myself wanting to reintroduce things that I had forgotten I used to do! Never forget ur inner child! Love your channel

🇬🇧 I love to journal, I’ve been doing this for over a year now. I do Journalling where I write about what’s been happening each day, I do Gratitude, Art Journalling and scripting (LOA), I have to do lists. All these have become my everyday rituals (part from Art Journalling, I do this when I want to be creative) and has helped me on my journey of self care, which is what we all need in times like these. Also keeps my mind occupied in lockdown, stops me from getting bored, I also have started reading old classics and annotating, so lots to do to keep your mind occupied and also teaching yourself too......sorry going off in one now haha 😂 x

Thanks for this, Sophie! I’ll try have that MORNING PAGES as well. As for me, I always do FREE-WRITING. After dumping my thoughts, I would usually make graphs or spider web to summarize or to point out the main themes. Usually, I do free-writing when I am worried about something or when I am trying to figure out solutions to my problems. It really helps me a lot as well. I have 3 journals. One is being used for my every day to do list. One is being used for my finances including my savings, expenses, budget, etc. It helps me reflect on the things I bought and how much more I can spend for the month. The last one is used to jot down the essential items I need to buy and the items I am getting rid of. I also write 5ere my mini projects like learning how to make soaps or learn how to make oat milk. Basically, that journal is dedicated for my slow living, minimalistic, and more sustainable lifestyle goals. This is like my main journal this year since this is where I do free writing. Again, thanks for this Sophie. I am also still working on my capsule wardrobe. I will post it on Instagram as soon as I am done. It really is super hard to let go of some items that have sentimental value huhu but I have already separated them in a box. I might sell them or donate them by the end of February.

I do a mix in my journaling. I use freestyle and gratitude. I started bullet journaling which is almost like a planner to me but like you I focused on the aesthetic that I got tired of it. I stopped for awhile but am back journaling since i turned 50. Ive been writing journals on and off since I was in grade school, but as I got older I got busier and stopped. With me turning 50 in middle of pandemic, journaling has become a form of therapy. Thanks for sharing the techniques.

I really do enjoy your videos - so soothing to watch and listen to. I love the scenery, the classical music, the quotes you add, your voice, all of it. :) Thank you for producing these! I just started using a bullet journal late last year, and I've certainly learned you need to make it your own. Certain aspects are more or less useful for me, so I add or remove as desired. I've been keeping a thought journal for 2 years now, since my dad passed. It just helped me to write things down, more than I would have thought. Now I include any thoughts about major events, or any time I have a new idea about something, like a new discovery. I'm also documenting my journey into learning more about my faith. I do type my thought journal just b/c my hand gets tired after writing. :) I appreciate the techniques mentioned in your video - very helpful!

I journaled alot when I lived in the country in my late 20's. I lived in Stowe, Vermont then life sped up when I returned to NYC. The hectic & work week left little time to be reflective. It was a shift into action mode. But I managed to switch my writing style to a form of instructions to myself since by my mid 30's since I had jumped into my passion full time & became a street artist. I would write out my step by step routine and short term future goals. I developed my inner nurturing dialog during those 7 years as a street artist. I spent all that time alone (directing) myself to produce and sell art, learning all the emotional ups & downs of that terrain. Around that time, age 35. I started using a Genesh mantra. You can look it up on KZfaq. It changed my thought cadence . It Condensed & configured my thought pattern. . So now I write paragraphs of poetry . Later I became an art teacher & while teaching I made a collection of these instructional poetic paragraphs. Which give non artist and artist insight into the creative process as well as life perspective. I hope to publish some day. ❤️

Never thought how powerful journaling is. I even have moments wherein I just don't want to write but end up writing most. I learned that it is when you think that you need it least that it makes more sense to find refuge in writing.

my favorite way of journaling is the unsent letter.Actually it's more like my prayer in the journal 😅.I am one of those who are guilty on not praying before sleeping and waking up in the morning.it really helps me a lot and it's really calming like I'm a step closer to our Savior!I started journaling way back 2009.as a student apprentice in a foreign country, journaling helps me overcome every hardwork, disappointment and even anger...I think I should be writing unsent letter again not just bulleting!thank you for sharing us the importance of journaling!more powers!❤️

Yes, I recognize the aesthetics part. Having a journal that is not aesthetically pleasing has stopped me many times from making it a routine. I just started writing a journal again, and your tips are very helpful. I will try to focus on the process and not the end result of beautiful looking pages😀.

For folks who are curious about morning pages (which I love), it was developed by Julia Cameron and it’s one of the core practices in her book on creative recovery, The Artist’s Way. You write three pages of stream of consciousness writing first thing in the morning. Usually takes about 30 minutes or so. Cheers!

Really great ideas Sophie!! I love the way you go through different ways of journaling! One type of journaling I did at work. I would put my thoughts about work in a daily email to myself. Often it would be about the successes I was having, but sometimes it was about the conflicts and hassles I was having. I would revisit them a few months later to see if the issues had been resolved. Often times the went away on their own! It was interesting to read those a few years later just to see how much I had grown!

What a coincidence I recently had to give myself this talk too. As always, thank you for your knowledge and for sharing it. My story: my SIL planned a mani/pedi party for a wedding in her family and invited everyone, including me. I do nails, so I was wondering who was going to service this party because I had no clue what was going on. Moments later she text me, “I need your help on this date.” I was furious because she expected me to help without asking me first. After I calmed down, I told myself, no, I don’t have to do this. So I gave her an excuse on why I couldn’t help. She seemed fine with my answer, but I kept beating myself up and questioning myself. Why? Because I know she’s going to talk crap behind my back. I know her. Then, I told myself. That’s on her, I can’t help it. I chose myself that day and it was hard but I feel such much better being the “bad/selfish” person than resentment. If you lose anyway, might as well do what you want.

Feeling guilty when we say No seems to be part of our DNA. However, this is something we need to work on. So good for you. You do you, let them talk. Brene Brown once said that “when you work hard to keep the peace on the outside, you wage a war internally. It’s not your job to make sure you don’t disappoint anyone.”

I love writing, but I have trouble with organizing my journal so stricktly hihi. I always kind of miss the point of a bullet journal. As I have two little kids, for now I just use it as a way of playing. I add all kinds of beautiful illustrations, I jot down recipes and thoughts. Its a jumble. My good intention is to make the next one into a "real" bullet journal. I do use a bambook for lists and to dos, and the great thing is that I can actually wipe it clean when it's done. I love your method too, because you can look back and see what you've accompliced. Love your videos, they are very inspiring and a lovely way to start my day.

Wow, watching this video was as relaxing as meditation. Your voice is so calming. Excellent video, editing and especially SOUND. Great music choices, mixing, recording… To answer the question: I’ve journaled almost every day for many years. I used to use pen and paper, but found they were casualties of wear and tear. I started keeping a digital journal about 25 years ago and still have most of them (although again, occasional data loss, file corruption etc. still steals the occasional entry.) I mostly just write free form, but incorporate most of the other techniques from time to time whenever the urge strikes me.
