Visited several prisons when I was a Deputy in Florida. Props to all the Correctional Officers out there. I would much rather be on the street rather than working inside those fences.

Most of time the stress come from your fellow officers, not the inmates.

It's funny you mention the female CO the way you did. I just went through a job shadow this morning for the application process, and my FTO was a female. She ran the dorm herself, and pretty much was the laid back kind. Letting very small things slide as long as the inmates were well behaved. She was fun to talk to. I shadowed her for 2 hours. I'm not discrediting what you're saying at all, just putting out my findings in this one experience. Thank you.

This guy have no idea what he’s talking about. He left a big one out which is what I guarantee this guy is, the inmate lover. As soon as he said inmates are upset when he leaves his unit I knew it. And that’s the WORST kind of officer. He’s the one that lets inmates do whatever they want and a lot of times they become some form of a duck. Also the by the book officer is a lot of times the best kind because they are the go to when shit hits the fan or you need a guy that knows what he’s doing.

You forgot to say The Scared Officers. The Office who appears to be a convict lover. They're scared to say,"NO". In a hearing the'll put themselves on the witnesses to defend the convict. They're the buddies of prisoners. They will tell you something then get amnesia on you. When their on the floor they let convicts do what ever they want.

I totally disagree with your point of view on female co's. Maybe that's how it was ran at your facility but at the facilities I've worked at it was never that way. I've worked city, state and county level corrections in three different states and never have I seen females just pushing buttons/only working admin positions. While working state and county we had females on C.E.R.T./SRT. The county jail I work in now has more female officers than male and for the most part..we're the stronger officers. So for any female whos watching this... don't think you'll become a CO and just sit in the tower or dorms doing nothing. You are going to work your ass off!

Don't know what state you're from but TDCJ, that's Texas Department of Criminal Justice, our female co's must be from Texas. I've seen 5 WOman teams go in on some 'bad a**' men inmate and TCB just as fast and effective as any 5 man teams. Run the floor like a boss. Lots of respect for our female officers here in Texas.

I spent 22 1/2 years with the FL DOC and had to medically retire due to an off the job accident. I started as a CO in 1988 and finished in 2011 as a CO Captain. I can honestly say that in all that time, I NEVER ONCE had any type of problem with any inmate. I dealt with every type and custody level inmates from minimum to death sentence. I didn't baby inmates but I did treat them with respect and I received respect in return. It was ALWAYS 100% of the time with other staff. So I agree with you on that issue. As a Shift OIC, I listened to my line CO's more than I did Sgt.'s. If someone wasn't doing their job, I knew about it and took action to either correct the problem or help those individuals find another career path. I worked multiple shifts weekly and I worked hard. I never stopped long enough to sit down more than 5 minutes and rarely ate any type of meal while on duty. My point is this, I expected my officers to 1) come to work, 2) do what their trained to do and 3) make sure that everyone goes home at the end of shift. Just my $0.02 worth.

It’s always better to be respected than liked. I’m the CO that’ll drop everything to go unclog an inmates toilet, fix plumbing issues, etc. but don’t bother asking for extra trays, blankets, or giving me a sob story to get out and use the phones. Treat inmates like human beings, but don’t get close to them. Treat them all equally don’t play favorites and don’t make promises that you’ll end up falling through on. An honest “No” gains more respect than an empty promise. Don’t share personal details to inmates, especially about coworkers, don’t rile inmates up or pit them against each other. Don’t shit talk inmates, it’s better to keep a poker face and pretend you don’t hear them. Not every inmate will respect you nor like you and same goes for your coworkers.

Bless your heart darling. I am a female and worked in a male facility and I worked every position the only thing I did not do was strip search. I did have to call a male for that. But I worked the cell block. The female officer can do more then admin. Lets talk about the male in a female facility who can't even do a pat search.

I've been a C/O for 6 months and I consider myself a laid back Officer. My pods are always calm and well run. I respond to fights in other pods but have yet to have one in my presence which from what I understand is a sign of respect from the inmates who will not fight in front of you. I do my rounds always on time, I do my searches, and I always get a proper count. I work at a level 3 institution which in my state is a high security prison with a 22/7 lock down. Great videoz so one question is for the female officers, are positions offered in the prisons as the same in the military. Because in the military there are certain positions thats female cadets cannot not do due to the military not allowing them to work, it sounds like it's the same in prison and wouldn't that create amonisty among the male officers who are doing the job the right way and get upset that a female officer would do less for the same pay rate, your thoughts

Obviously this guy was/is a terrible C/O. Listen to what he says here about how he's had inmates almost cry when he would leave their dorm. That's terrible... The man speaking is not the type of guy you want to learn from. The fact that he has a cell phone in a restricted area alone is enough to show what a poor officer he is, let alone he looks like a scraggly mess. Most really good C/O's do follow the books fairly closely, you're much less likely to get hemmed up that way. It's the guys who go off course and try to somehow earn respect from inmates that end up being of no value. If an inmate likes you, I assure you he doesn't respect you; he just likes that you allow him to get away with more than he should be. I can listen to this guy for just a few minutes and I know his whole character. As far as female C/O's there's good ones and bad ones just like the guys. As a C/O you are not here to be respected or liked; you're there to do your job. Nothing more, nothing less. There's a reason the state sets up rules to be followed by both inmates and C/O's alike. These are well placed guidelines and really the bread and butter of the institution. Firm, fair and consistent. So if you're a C/O who is liked by the inmates, there's a reason for that. You do your job poorly.

Brad, I am not you typical Correctional Employee and I do not have any idea what State you are from. I have been retired for number of years now but when I was working, in many State prisons in the northeast, life was not always as you described. I am not here to challenge what you have said but I am here to give my opinion about what you said. Over half my career was spent at the Watch Commander level. I have undergraduate degrees in Criminal Justice and Criminal Science as well as a graduate level degree in the same field. I pride myself to have been called an Officers Supervisor because I lived your life while trying to operate one of the largest prison systems in this country. I know what it is like to be at a level where you lived with the inmates and tried to do your job as best you could. I agree with the types of officers you will encountered and your general assessment of those groups. I want you to look to look at your assessment of female officers. Look at it from the observation of male Officers working in female prisons. Male Officers are arrested and removed from female prisons at a much higher rate than female officers from male prisons. Why is that? Because male officers in general take much more advantage of female inmates. I do not always mean the male officers used their physical strength over female inmates, although that sometimes happens. Female inmates have much more power over male Officers with their ability to place Officers in compromising situations. Male inmates do not have that much ability to compromise a female Officer, unless they are willing to get involved physically with an inmate. What is my point here? Female Officers working in male Correctional Facilities is something that will continue in the future. Should such conditions be something that should be allowed? You are right that some females move into non-contact positions just like some male Officers do. Sometimes females Officer have no choice in how they have to behave. I worked with many female Officers that were outstanding with male inmates, some much better that male Officers. Once I had to address the issue of directing a female Officer to comply with a housing policy on naked photos posted inside the inmates cube. The female officer was willing to comply with my direction however, she explained that the inmates posted those photos just to get a rise out of her. I never thought of that from her point of view but she was right. I could have ordered her to follow my orders but was that the best course of action? She assured me that with the aid of fellow male officers she could get the issue under control and she did. There are some things that go better with female Officers between inmates than with male officers. A good supervisor tries to balance that issue. Female Officers can get something from male inmates that sometimes male Officers cannot. Does that mean that all Officers should be treated the same by their employer? No! It is a dynamic that we need to learn. There are some things that a good Officer can do over a bad one. You clearly described the bad ones. Should a female Officer be allowed to move from an inmate contact position? Males do that all the time but your position is that females do that sooner than they're seniority dictates. It that a similar situation in female prisons with male Officers? I am not sure, but it may be. If it is, does that mean it is right? No it is not. Equal pay for equal work. But that is reality in modern prisons. Are we likely to go backwards in time to the good old days? Do you really think that? Brad, I offer you this advice. The future is not likely going to change much. Women working in male prisons is a thing of the future just like male employees working in a female prison. Try to find what works the best for all of you. There is a balance here, you just need to find it. The safest position for you is to find a way for all to work together. Your life depends on that. Your future depends on that. I cannot tell you how concerned for you I am, as well as your fellow employees. Please use your head. It is the only thing keeping you alive. Each Officer you encounter has a new set of life experiences. Learn from them, grow together, stay safe together.

Well as a female officer in a closed custody male prison I work in segregation and we do showers and the ONLY thing we don’t do is unclothed searches smh 🤦🏾‍♀️

I like the video but I have to disagree with your opinion about female officers . Female officers bring a lot to correctional work. They are often highly skilled at de-escalation ; especially when working will all male offenders. Both make and female offenders tent to behave themselves while in the presence of female officers. Female officers have the potential to garner more respects from offenders. Female officers resolve conflict more than male as they are more calm and level headed. Less physical use of force is prevalent with female officers over male officers. Female officers are apart of special teams and require the same training as their male counterparts. I’m not sure why you’re painting this negative picture of female officers. No institution would risk the safety of an untrained incompetent staff..

I was a male officer in the Tn Dept of Corrections for several years in a male facility and our female officers had to do the exact same jobs as us male officers except for strip searches, every other job was expected to be done just the same as male officers including pat searches.

I work at a state prison as female CO and our females CO don’t get any different treatment than our male CO’s I work as a pod officers with 128 male offenders. My department doesn’t do gender based training or special treatment for female COs.

Rules are there to be enforced. There’s no problem being “by the book” if you exhibit empathy at the same time.

Very true about all perspectives on COs. Awwwee man i hated working with the COs who go to sleep majority of shift or never come back to count, then have to be call over the radio to 56. Ive done use of forces, clothed searches, been on the floor by myself against 60+ inmates and the only hope of getting out alive is in trusting my fellow CO. Its serious business man but some get compliance and its just sad. Because while one is sleeping another is working twice as hard gettin the same check

I just don’t tolerate disrespect but I’m not a hard ass Officer either. I’m more like an enforcer but I’m consistent but the guys that have done a lot of time tend to like me because they know what to expect 🤷🏾. Always love to learn though. Okay....mentioning the female CO, offended, it has not always been PREA standards as far as same sex pat downs, announcing your entrance, etc. I have been in the depths with many of my fellow officers, gotten assaulted before (hit in the forehead, big ole egg), will always back anyone up and NEVER want to be treated any different. I have proven I can do it and wanted to be treated the same! If you can prove you can do it, it should not matter what sex you are in my mind. Been there, done that, still doing it.

The most skilled C.O.'s out there are the old-timers who faced multiple demotions.

I retired from LAPD after 31 years. I worked patrol, Special Enforcement Group,and C.R.A.S.H all in glorious uniformed capacity. I learned that it was easier to talk people to jail than to put my hands on them and use force. Treating people with a little respect and dignity always paid dividends, and saved my body and uniform from unnecessary wear and tear.

Yep you made some good points but I disagree regarding female officers. The reason for that is that the majority of female recruits end up in female prisons working with female inmates. In these facilities you have male officers treated the same as you describe females here. Only a small percentage of female officers end up in male facilities. It’s not that they are any less helpful it just depends on the facility that the are employed at.

I need to know where this prison is because the “females “ at the prison do it all. We work on the floors, the large cell houses, cert, tact, and High Max.

So untrue about female officers. We have to work just as hard if not harder then the men to prove ourselves. That might be what goes on there, but not where I work.

I am currently a CO a few months away from having 3 years in. I am not sure what facility you worked at but the only things females cannot do at the male prison I work at are strip searches and showers for the inmates on Alpha (the hole). We are able to do strip searches on transgender offenders but there also has to be another male present to ensure the inmate cannot claim anything inappropriate happened. There are PREA announcements when a female walks on a unit, that part is true. It is a requirement in the state and it is essentially useless but they want to cover themselves legally. We run units on our own, averaging 242 inmates per unit, we can do pats and property searches... again we do everything except for anything involving nude males. I honestly see more lazy male officers than female officers and I am impartial. If someone works they WORK and that is great. We go through every single training class with the male officers. We get on teams just as quickly as male officers. We are all held to the same standard. Some of your other points I agree with but I'd say about 70% is alright while 30% of the information was a little wonky. Granted a state run prison compared to a private prison and different states could definitely have different ways they handle things. Still, thank you for taking the time to make the video regardless.

I 150% disagree with the things you said about female officers! Evidently that's how your facility was run, but not mine! I work as a CO at a State facility and we do and deal with just as much or more than a male CO will ever do or is scared to do it! I run 4 dorms by MYSELF every single day when all the men do is rounds in ISO Seg and sit on their ass doing, nothing! I go into fights alone and everything else daily before assistance even gets there! Try being a female officer has 200 and sometimes more inmates at the time (alone), then you can talk because I do this everyday! How many inmates do you have alone on a daily basis?

I was a Corrections Officer in Virginia in a maximum security prison for eight years before going into the military. The qualifications for being a corrections officer is; if you can count to ten, a clean criminal record and if you could walk to point A to B - you got a job. While being a corrections officer I've seen people beaten-up, stabbed, fired, bullied and riots. I've seen officers quit on the first day, officers getting romantically involved with prisoners and officers bring stuff into the prisoners. (IT'S A TOUGH JOB)!

Assholes are everywhere and can be either one, male and female. However, you actually have 3 types of officers, only 3. One. The ones by the book and quick to write up cases. Two. The ones that are more human, considerate and know common sense. They're nice but at the same time, they make sure that being nice isn't being weak. Then, you have the ones who are "dirty". These are about image of either officers from one and two, but in reality are nothing but the ones who not only are dirty, but also dangerous. I worked with many of them and for the most part were (I'm referring to when I used to be a CO) female officers. These female officers mingle with inmates and I remember of one who, after I battled to put the inmates inside their bunks, as soon as I turn around to put the rest to the other bunks would open the door and let them all out again and when I questioned her she would give me a very stupid laugh while flirting with an inmate. The job is very stressful, it changes you, emotionally, mentally and physically. You see a beautiful female officer who just started, a few months later she's ugly. Guys too, you develop asthma, etc. The environment is very negative, noisy and dirty. 5 Years was enough for me.

The bully ones are the ones that beat your son with 4 others because of false suspicion and throw him in confinement without medical help. Among other things. Let me tell you folks being a CO-I in Missouris worst prison, Has changed my perspective on the outlooks of people. There are differences differences in mentality In offenders versus correctional officers Regarding basic things Such as what is and isn't your business. Like they really want you to look at them and not give a fuck If they Cut their bunk up and made a 9" knife to stab the guy next door at mainline. Just wanted to put it out there that we're having a really really bad staffing crisis(Somtimes we only have about 16 CO-I's on camp) so if you're a local And you think you got what it takes to fight a man with a knife with only a pair of cuffs and some mace Then sign right up they'll take you at the door.

How should I prepare myself as a female going into that job

The deadbeat sgt. was allowed to be that way by the upper rank because the upper rank is just as deadbeat.

I am on a last name basis with my inmates, I don’t do nicknames or answer to them, I don’t argue with them. I show respect, when they don’t they understand the answer I will give is no. I won’t talk to them until they are willing to treat me with basic respect as I do them. If they are pleasant, I will do what I can and sometimes more for them. If they are assholes I do the bare minimum. It’s easy when you get the hang of it.

Do you ever regret being a correctional officer? I am currently in the hiring process, but I am having second thoughts... due to reading online post of other correctional officers saying that the job takes a toll on you... mentally, physically, and emotionally... so even say that it will have a negative effect on your personal family life... and changed you into being a heartless @sshole... if you have options... would you still choose to be a correctional officer as your choice of work???

Learn from end "by the book" guy so you know how things are supposed to be done. If you don't want to be that guy then Over time you'll learn what small things you can let slide and how to do so without putting a target on yourself for IA. Can't safely cut corners if you don't actually know where the corners are. +1 for the female Co's. Woman do get housing units from time to time but for the most part our majors prefer to put them in easy posts. Video visits, visiting room, control, towers, med-cart. And especially when on OT. One was bragging about how much OT she had done so far this year. Yea, I'd do 3 doubles a week too if I knew I was going to sit in a tower for 16 hours.

I'm a c,/o Florida and have been in a fight with an inmate. It was myself and the captain,oh did I say that I was a female c/o. Hey he needed my backup what a shift.

Old vid but they can do searches in NC and actually can do strip and pats, they're not wanted too but they can and may have to. My experience there's a select few female officers and one I could cut up with. She actually was dying of ovary cancer at the time and really didn't care anymore expect when it came to doing her job. The imates knew something was up because she starting wearing a hat when she never did before. She was a pretty woman but also wasn't afraid to go hands on. And at the time i was there she actually was on a CERT team for a bit. She was a awesome fto and would banter back as well. I moved to nights and ran my dorms well enough. When she eventually passes even the inmates mourned.

As a female officer, ill be one of the nice sociable ones, but theyll know im not their friend or give favors. I wont be risking my job for the cons that want to manipulate. But there's good people in there, too. Fortunately i have 13 yrs experience with combative violent residents in facilities as opposed to the fresh boots. Definitely not lazy and not a hard ass either.
