I received a lot of push-back from my huge water changes video, and I found an amazing example of my water change logic. Live Fish Direct is a perfect example of the scientific logic in action.

I got your back bro! Look at my Aquariums, I always do 80% waterchange. And sometimes 3 times in one week. People want to believe that waterchanges are bad because they are lazy.

People don't seem to understand that river fish receive a 100% water change every few seconds. So long as the water chemistry is the same there will be no problems.

@mrdirtydeedz28737 жыл бұрын
I do at least a 50% change once a week on a 36 bow front with 15 fish using tap water. Never once have I had a fish die or even get sick. They're all 100% healthy and thriving. I have 8 Tiger Barbs that have grown 150% their original size in one year. Never be afraid of water changes, it's not as complicated as some make it out to be.
@JayJay-gk6cr5 жыл бұрын
Depends what water supply you have, they do 6 water changes because they have spring water but where I live the water out of my tap has so much calcium and magnesium that I need to add chemicals and ph lower etc so it would stress my fish doing it all the time

People with monster South American and Central American cichlids do 75-80% water changes all the time...and have been doing it for years, even decades. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, as long as you know your water parameters of the tank prior to the water change and the parameters of your tap water. Great job!

I do massive water changes often , even 90 per cent sometimes ... So I totally agree with you . Also I've noticed in my experience that with large water changes fry and juvenile fish grow faster and larger . So I am with you man .

Hi AL.. I have no problem with large water changes. I believe it comes down to individual needs, preference, water quality they use... and many other factors. It's great to share knowledge and personal opinions we just have to remember to do all with grace and respect. I do different percentages of water changes on my tanks as each tank is different and has different inhabitants therefore different requirements. This was very interesting and unbelievable doing 6 per day but that's what they require then that's what they should do. =D

I want to be clear, i'm not prescribing that everyone must do substantial water changes. Rather I am giving people the freedom to do what they need to, to keep their aquariums at their best. After that video I got a lot of push-back on the large volume changes which compelled me to do another video. Thanks again for your great comments.
@DebTim7 жыл бұрын
I realize that I felt you made that clear. What I understood is that you were making the point large water changes are safe to do. My biggest concern is a fluctuating PH. I have experienced that before. I feel that is more dangerous to fish as it's often not realized until it's too late. Great video.. I like that you responded with another video to make sure you points were understood and intended. =D

when you keep a fishtank it is like a freezeframe for the entire ecosystem of your tank,ie if you keep live bearers you need to decide what part of there year you want to look at,,,,the end of the dry season?(muddy),,,,the middle of the wet season?(that is when all the plants that got washed away are starting to take hold,breeding coulours are starting and bugs are hatching(this is the time when the water exchange you talk about takes place,)so a 24X12X18 to recreate a pool that size that will acomodate 20 small fish 12 month/yr you would need a small river or your house plummbed into a mountain.so we try to maintain that pool by recycling the water but fish always know sweetwater.if you can maintain quality and quantity stik with the water changes but give them a rest from it every month or so,,,,,even throw stax of live food in on one of there water change holidays,good luck

Yeah Josh is a legend, and I think that some of his success is due in part to his clear understanding of his water chemistry and leveraging it to do great things. Him and I have very similar water chemistry and I cant see myself touching my pH/GH/KH anytime in any of my tanks.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I'll have to wait, they seems to require at least a 55 gallon and a pH above 7.8! Won't fit my current 32 gallon amazon. But I'll keep them in mind.
@AquaticLogic7 жыл бұрын
Yeah they do need alkaline water with a lot of hardness. My water is liquid limestone so it works perfect for these fish. Having said that you will also never see me with an Amazon tank because I could not get my water anywhere close to those parameters without a lot of expensive equipment.
@extarys24167 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my water is 7.8 but the corys don't seem to care. They keep making eggs all the time.

I have been trying to put this same argument to my wife about bigger water changes but when you visit the Aquarium shops it’s always the same advice 25 to 30% which still leaves me with crap looking water although I have an FX 6 and a decent size Oasi and a small Hydra filter ... Thanks for your posting
@AquaticLogic6 жыл бұрын
In the future I would be very VERY skeptical of any so-called "advise" from people working at Aquarium shops. Obviously some do know what they are doing, but in my experience the knowledgeable people are not bagging fish, and doing the grunt work with customers.

I thought water changes were a good thing. I do 50% water change 1-2 times/week on my 5gal (with a betta, 3 neon tetras and a mystery snail) and my water always tests perfect. The only time it causes a problem is if I also change my filter material (the charcoal/wool insert) at the same time. That seems to shock everybody (betta lies down, neons stay at the surface) for a day or two, so when I'm doing a big change I just sort of rinse out the filter. I'm new to aquariums but I have been a bit shocked by how many people are quick to say "THIS is the way you have to do it, and NO OTHER WAY is any good..." when in fact the right way depends entirely on your own setup (fish, water, filtration, temperature, etc.). I know some people think 4 fish and a snail is too much for 5 gal, but the fish are growing, have great colour, and the snail lays eggs every 60 hours. So they're all doing just fine.

I have no doubt that massive water changes are just fine as long as chemistry is kept constant. However, out of curioisty, is it that necessary to do 80% a week? I am just starting a reef tank and I am unfamiliar with african and other fresh water venues. id assume they would be quite similar interms of available intank filtration..ie sump, skimmer, live rock, ect. It would be very expensive for one to do 80% salt water changes weekly. Not that it shouldnt be done, just that it is expensive lol. let me know your thoughts

Salt water is like a trophy wife. Freshwater is the one you settle down with and have a family.

I would think it all depends on the situation. But why would you want zero No3 in a planted tank ? Or am i missing something.

If you have live plants then yes you need some NO3.

+Aquatic Logic. I do 90%+ water change per week and will be automating this soon with self assembled 4 stage filtering system and self made auto siphon system. Hope this supports your reasoning.
@AquaticLogic7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment byankos. Are you gonna be rigging up a float/auto-top off system like The King Of DIY did?
@yankos_7 жыл бұрын
No. In my way of thinking, this is a high energy system. Timers always on, 12v power supply always on standby and a pump required to light water to tank. I always try to find "no-energy" or "low-energy" alternatives. Most aquariarists use powered equipment for their solutions. I will only use powered solutions where I not find free potential and kinetic energy to do the job, e.g. air pump (2W), 1200L/h(questionable) Canistar filter (20W spec, 27w actual), Heater set at lowest possible temperature (Soon to be replaced with a Thermoelectric Heat Pump for heating and cooling), LED lighting with controller set at the lowest possible setting, only timer for light, all mechanical switches. In my case, for the waste water I have made a Siphon Overflow good for about 5L/min that has an additional batching siphon that siphons out about 50mm from the aquarium whenever the water reaches full mark, which all works with gravity. No power, just gravity, and cannot over siphon the aquarium as batch siphon breaks when reached. Filling of the aquarium will be with a mains pressure, remote setup, local control, 5 stage filter (no RO), via pressure regulator, valves, drip monitor, located and plumbed into filter system to minimise appearance of equipment. All parts of the system have been sourced. System is now being tested and I am waiting for the opportunity when my wife is not looking to get out the 25mm hole saw and cut a hole in the European Oak parquetry (expensive stuff in Australia) :-( :-) hahaha..............

Spring water with nearly zero contaminates and probably highly oxygenated!!!! How couldn't it be good for your fish!!! The equivalent of chairing a sealed house 6 x a day with fresh air!! When I used spring well water for my tanks growing up I did water changes every other day nearly (being younger I always loved to tinker with my tanks just for the fun of it) I never once used dechlorinator or water treatments just straight in the tank!! Never lost fish other then when I traded them in for new fish! City water is whats lethal for fish when untreated!!

My city water is beautiful (less the residual Chlorine that is).
