01. Appreciate the beauty of everyday life
02. Focus on the present moment
03. Learn something new
04. Cultivate your interests
05. Focus on your health
06. Embrace solitude
I hope you enjoyed watching the video and hope these 6 ways to avoid boredom from the wisdom of Arthur Schopenhauer will add value to your life.
Arthur Schopenhauer was one of the greatest philosophers of all time. He lived from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 19th century in Germany. His most important work was “The World As Will and Representation”. He was one of the most prominent figures of the philosophy of pessimism and the first great Western philosopher who was interested in Buddhism. The best way to understand his teachings is to analyze them through the eyes of the enlightened pessimism prevalent in Buddhist philosophy. Arthur Schopenhauer is known as the ultimate pessimist because he articulates a pessimistic worldview that questions life’s meaning. He believed that the universe was fundamentally irrational and human beings are driven by a force called the Will, a basic force in the Universe, never satisfied, and we, the human beings, don’t have much self-control to fight it. Schopenhauer argues that the best way to be happy is by ceasing to look for happiness and instead try to remove the unhappiness from our life. This idea reflects philosophical pessimism, which is not a psychological disposition, but rather a worldview. Philosophical pessimism suggests that it is always better to expect the worst in order to receive the best. By using the principles of philosophical pessimism, we can eliminate the irrational hopes and expectations we have in life and thus we can live more peacefully and happily.

It was Schopenhauer in 1982 that saved my sanity when I was going through a painful breakup with my girlfriend, as I discovered she was cuckolding me with another friend. I read “Women, Love and Death” a condensation of his essays, it was through these words I mustered the valor to completely break free. I was 23 at the time, young and dumb…life lessons were learned. Arthur Schopenhauer started me In a long quest for knowledge and enlightenment, his legacy ensures his immortality…Cheers 🍻 to Arthur…Salud!

Being bored can unjustly led to more boredom! Filling that space with some sort of pleasure may help. Stay focused on the present moment Learn something new take up a hobby and find resources! Ex….when taking a walk and suddenly you feel bored start looking at nature and other sights! I found that to be hilarious! Not the looking at nature part the idea of getting bored on a walk! Use your resources to find the hobby you would enjoy and go from there!

It's also beneficial to see the good in boredom. Boredom doesn't necessarily mean despair. When I get bored I want to revolt against that negative emotion and when I do, I feel worse. If I feel bored and embrace it, I actually feel a tranquility take over and after 30 minutes the emotion suddenly dies away and I feel good. Of course this is all personal experience so it won't be true for everyone.

Boredom is but a name for a state of mind in which one fails to be present to anything but thought. Which means thought is boring. Experience is fun. Thought can make experiences less fun. But less thought makes experiences more fun.

I never realized the genius of Shopenhauer until I watched this video. I've heard very few people talk about the reality of past and future in the way he's described them here. To most people they seem all too real to abandon, and yet it lies in the abandonment of time that we find our way back. Where we are able to live once again through the eyes of a child. Because we're never really growing up, but distant. The only thing that grows is our involvement with abstract thoughts about abstract concepts such as purpose, happiness and identity. All of which are conceptions of language, not experienced realities.

Remember that pessimists are usually right but it's the optimists that change the world. Optimists focus on the WHY and tend to be the dreamers like Walt Disney but need the people like Schopenhauer to cultivate the HOW. Walt Disney only made it because of his brother who was skilled in the banking industry and ran the finances which kept Walt out of continual and reckless bankruptcy.
