In this video we will be talking about how to be a pessimist from the wisdom of Arthur Schopenhauer. He is mostly known for his famous book “The World as Will and Representation”. He is known as the ultimate pessimist and his idea reflects philosophical pessimism.
So here are 7 ways you can follow in order to become a pessimist from the wisdom of Arthur Schopenhauer -
01. Accept your limits
02. Accept that everything changes and decays
03. Learn to see suffering as the best teacher in life
04. Don’t be blinded by love
05. Sacrifice pleasure to avoid pain
06. Limit your expectations
07. Find Happiness within yourself
I hope you enjoyed watching the video and hope these 7 ways you can follow in order to become a pessimist from the wisdom of Arthur Schopenhauer will add value to your life.
Arthur Schopenhauer was one of the greatest philosophers of all time. He lived from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 19th century in Germany. His most important work was “The World As Will and Representation”. He was one of the most prominent figures of the philosophy of pessimism and the first great Western philosopher who was interested in Buddhism. The best way to understand his teachings is to analyze them through the eyes of the enlightened pessimism prevalent in Buddhist philosophy. Arthur Schopenhauer is known as the ultimate pessimist because he articulates a pessimistic worldview that questions life’s meaning. He believed that the universe was fundamentally irrational and human beings are driven by a force called the Will, a basic force in the Universe, never satisfied, and we, the human beings, don’t have much self-control to fight it. Schopenhauer argues that the best way to be happy is by ceasing to look for happiness and instead try to remove the unhappiness from our life. This idea reflects philosophical pessimism, which is not a psychological disposition, but rather a worldview. Philosophical pessimism suggests that it is always better to expect the worst in order to receive the best. By using the principles of philosophical pessimism, we can eliminate the irrational hopes and expectations we have in life and thus we can live more peacefully and happily.

I really enjoyed the video. But I’d like to comment on one aspect: @1:50 ff there is a discussion of free will. My favorite quote about free will is Schopenhauer’s “man can do what he wills, but he cannot will what he wills.” This constitutes free will if by free will you only mean that you can do what you will. But the common sense notion of free will is being able to will what you will. While you can reflect on your limits and your desires, you can only do so if you have the will to reflect on your limits and desires. So while the compatibilist view makes free will technically possible, it only does so by using a definition that I do not think would satisfy most people‘s common sense notion of free will.

There is a difference with philosophical pessimism and what people generally call a pessimist. If you're a philosophical pessimist, in a normal daily life it converts to a realist.

I want to emphasis on the notion that "Romantic love is build upon sexual instinct",which in return another cover or a step towards procreation , is the truest thing I heard in a long time, since no one can form a long lasting relationship without being attracted to that person physically, if the desire is absent or has faded, that relationship will either turn into a platonic one or just end, and also if you remove the element of procreation any romantic relationship can feels that it lacks something indeed.

*Friedrich Nietzsche, The Gay Science* “Indeed people nowadays can hardly endure the thought of pain, and make out of it an affair of conscience, and a reproach to collective existence. The appearance of pessimistic philosophies is not at all the sign of great and dreadful miseries, for these interrogative marks, regarding the worth of life, appear in periods when the refinement and eleviation of difficulty already deem the unavoidable gnat-stings of soul and body to be altogether too bloody and wicked. And in the poverty of actual experience of pain, would now like to make painful general ideas appear as suffering of the worst kind. There may indeed be a remedy for pessimism, and its excessive sensibility, which seems to me to be its real distress. . . The remedy for the distress is: distress.”

Sorry homie, your interpretation of Shoepanhauer's type of pessimism is just epicureanism. Should've started with a summation of 'pessimism' and its origins then going through the various points of his philosophy, then how it all comes together into his overall thesis on the universe/nature, which you don't nail. He's a great philosopher, whose ideas revolve around wanting people to overcome the weaknesses of human nature, the limitations of our world and for humanity to find a secular path to ascension. Have to thumbs down ya for being wrong in a few fundamental ways

I think it’s a bunch of illogical BS coming from a deep place of mental instability or lack of understanding of human nature/personality. There are many flaws in his pessimistic concepts: e.g. if all life has to offer is meaninglessness/there is no true meaning to life why bother meditating on life and death, spending more time living life to its fullest and removing unhappiness from your life? If you limit your expectations how will you ever get the motive to improve your abilities? At what point do you stop to reflect and limit expectations (at the age of 12 so you drop out of school as there’s no point dreaming of becoming an engineer for example as you know nothing about physics then?!) Who is responsible for establishing and maintaining “The Will” (the Matrix?!)? This is very selective pessimism he’s opted for to be able to craft a theory and a name.

why must the non existent come into existence only for it to go back into non existence? Schopenhauer puts light on many things but every man is limited in his thoughts, i am therefore a believer in afterlife for matter cannot create itself and neither can it be destroyed, the whole universe is energy whether in thoughts or concrete.i am a muslim. i greatly advise everyone to read the quran, you will find your answers in this book and there is no doubt

I am Muslim myself but I have many questions that I do not have answers to, and no one in my community or of people I know want to answer and they even dread to hear the question.

@@gottod6895 and i bet they're philosophical questions from your own experiences and they're the ones that are very hard to be understood. how can you arrive safe to your destination without your tires getting punctured when there are are pot holes in the road? its the same with your iman as a Muslim, if you have questions unanswered then they're pot holes in the road and you'll struggle on the journey and so they have to be filled up and then on your way you go. but whats the questions if i may ask?

@@khalidhakimi93 OK then, for Now here are one question: If God knows the future, he knows what humans will do and decide and hence their fate, because he has already written everything, doesn't that collide with the concept of free will? If humans are free how can their actions and the path they follow be already decided ? And can we blame those who sin if they are just living as God destined them to live ?
