I will mention this stuff also in the next part of this video and also share my tax return. When do you have to pay tax in Germany? If your taxable income (more to this later) exceeds 9000€ single and 18000€ married in a calendar year. You pay tax For 2019 the tax-free allowance has increased to 9168€ single and 18336€ married per annum. Do students earn tax-free or get everything back? No, students also have to pay tax if their income is above tax-free allowance. When is the deadline to file a return? - May 31 of the following year for compulsory filers (people who had more than 1 source of income, who changed job, where the spouse is also working) - Four years for non-compulsory filers Why is tax deducted, why to file the return and what is taxable income? Your HR knows how much your monthly payment is and how much you will get paid in one particular year so they deduct tax monthly assuming it will stay the same and this is your actual taxable income and forward it to tax office. They also know if you are married or have kids, etc and consider these factors to have it more accurate. What tax office or your HR doesn't know are your werbungskosten (tax or work related expenses) like your monthly travel tickets to work, a laptop and a chair you bought for working from home or money you sent to your parents. So the main goal is to show maximum expenses to reduce your taxable income. E.g.: you earned 24000€ in 1 year and your HR deducted tax from your salary monthly seeing you earn 2000€. So your tax was deducted from 24000€. Now you file return and show that you sent 3000€ to your parents, you moved from one city to another and paid 2000€ for the transportation and renovation of a new place, you bought books, computers and paid for online courses another 2000€. So now you request by filing a return to the tax office to recalculate your return by deducting these expenses. So now if all expenses are accepted, the tax office will calculate the tax on your new taxable income (i.e. 24000-3000-2000-2000-tax free allowance-child free allowance, etc.) and give you back the difference. Can students claim their study costs of past years after they finish the study and start working (as the guy is suggesting in the video)? Not directly. They have to carry losses of every year forward to the next year (Verlustvortrag). That means if a student had study-related expenses and didn't earn in that year, he/she can file a Verlustvortrag and carry these expenses to next year and then to next year and then to another one for seven years (not four) and as soon as you earn good money you can take these expenses to that year. Keep in mind if you are a bachelor student, the chances are very low to carry your losses forward. You can carry only study-related costs to another year and not e.g. money you sent to parents. To carry forward your losses you have to file a tax return for each year like a normal tax filer with the same forms. How about sites like germantax.de? I know of many people who actually had no expense at all and did try to calculate return through online sites and it showed them back payment although they were suppose to get a return. I would never recommend someone to use these sites. You can always go to Lohnsteuerhilfeverein in your city to get it done cheaper. What costs can you add to lower your taxable income? Basic principle: Everything which has a connection to your work can be added as werbungskosten. If you buy a tie and suit to attend your friend's wedding, it is not accepted but if you buy a tie and a suit because you work in sales, bingo. The costs related to your studies (because studies are also connected to career), the money you sent home, charity, double household (if your spouse is living in another country), cost of family reunion, etc. are Sonderausgaben/Außergewöhnliche Belastung. Which can be added to tax declaration as well.

My German friend told me that if we apply for tax returns for the mobile phone and laptop which we bought during student life, we would get only 40 % of the money. Because as a single person normally we pay 40 % tax. Also if we buy anything from ebay kleinanzeigen, there we pay the money by-hand or by paypal to private individuals. How can we claim tax return for the mobile phone and laptop bought from individuals. As they do not give any valid receipt.? Thanks.

Have you seen the third part of the video.. ? There I have showed how much I have recieved for my electronics...For electronics there is no 40% rule ... in 2017 and 2018, the maximum you can file for tax returns is between 600.to 700.euro... if your electromic gadget is below this range then you can claim.that in the same year but if it is more than that then they distribute the amount and the rest you can file next year with some.depreciation

Mostly for used things its very hard to claim.because first you might not get a reciept and second even if you get a reciept then the seller might have already filed tax return for that product

One question: The maximum amount of EUR6000 which we can claim is a lump sum amount for our whole study period OR is it the maximum academic amount we can claim per year? For example if my master fee was EUR12000, can I only claim EUR6000 as a lump sum or I can claim the whole amount in two years? Thanks!!

In 2019 this amount is 952 Euro. Es gilt als geringwertiges Wirtschaftsgut. here is the source www.finanztip.de/arbeitsmittel/#:~:text=100%20Euro%20Abschreibung%20k%C3%B6nnen%20Sie,in%20voller%20H%C3%B6he%20steuerlich%20absetzen.

Thanks a lot for the great video man! I have a small but important question. I came to Germany in 2017 for a Master's degree and passed out in 2020. Now started a full-time job in 2021. I have never earned more than 9000 EUR gross till 2020. However, I have many study-related expenses and huge tuition fees. With a full-time job (started in 2021), I am planning to file taxes in 2022 for previous all years and carry forward the losses. But I have a deadline to file tax return for 2017 and that is 31st October 2021. What shall I do in this case? File tax return for 2017 so that I won't miss the deadline and carry forward the losses and add it in 2018-2021 tax returns which I will file next year?

Hi, Your video is really informative. I have a question that I studied in Germany from 2016 till mid-2019 and started my full-time work from Jan 2020. During my studies, I did some part-time work but the income was not more than a threshold value of 9000 Euros to be eligible for paying taxes. But now as a full-time employee, I am paying taxes. can I still file tax returns for my previous studying years and get some money out of my study period?

Yes... Did you watch all the parts of this video ? just one info for you .. As you started working in 2020 so it is better to apply for tax returns in 2021.... So with your 2020 tax you can file the tax returns for all your study period... but keep that in mind that you will apply for each year separetely and then you will get everything back with 2020 tax statement... Please read the pinned comment as well..

Can someone who just came to study in Germany and returning back to the home country, having done some part-time jobs and internship but with yearly income of less than 9000 Euros get all these benefits on tuition fees, stationary fees etc.? Hello, Thanks a lot for the video, it was very informative. I do have a few questions here, My Masters course began in 2019 and I started working Minijobs until beginning of 2021 (never crossed 9000 euros) August 2021 I started to work as a working student along with a Hiwi job and ended up getting class 6 for my working student job. I ended my hiwi contract in Nov 2021 (after three months) due to the tax class issue. Does that mean I have to file my taxes by May 2022 since you mentioned about compulsory filers? Also, when I tried adding my 2019 expenses on Wundertax (Free trial version) I received 0 refund in the end. Is that since I added only for the year 2019?

A tax refund is the difference between taxes paid and taxes owed. Each year (or each quarter, in some cases) a taxpayer submits a tax return that calculates his or her federal income taxes owed. ... Adjusting these withholding amounts can ensure that the taxpayer pays just enough taxes during the year. This is the definition of tax claim... so they will consider the whole amount of the phone or computer and then adjust the tax accordingly

Thanks for the information. I have few doubts about this. 1) Let's say I earned 30k per year and my tax is 10k (flat 33.33% tax). If I have 10k from my college expenses like laptop, tablet, mobile phone, internet, semester fee, etc. In this case, do I get back the entire 10k I paid as a tax that year, or Is this 10k subtracted from 30k and I will be charged 33.33% from the remaining 20k? 2) The official duration for my master's course is 2 years (4 semesters). Can I submit expenses from my 5th semester if it took me longer to complete? 3) The rule for computers seems to have changed from 2021, As far as I understand, there is no more € 952 cap on computer expenses. Is it so or did I understand it wrong? It is stated here Arbeitsmittel - Aufwendungen von der Steuer pauschal absetzen - Steuererklärung ohne Belege, Büroausstattung als Werbungskosten - Finanztip
@DesiInWonderland
@DesiInWonderland 2 жыл бұрын
1.) They will charge tax on 20k and then return the remaining which they charged for 30k. you wil not get 10k back. you get only the difference of tax that you have submitted and one more thing. you only get back Lohnsteuer. the rest of the taxes remains the same 2.) It doesn't matter. You can go to 6th semester as well and add those expenses as well 3.) I haven't checked the 2021 Werbungkosten but If you have checked it then it might be right because they increase this threshold every year.

Bro just make sure that do we need to apply by post or online? Rest of the process is comprehensively understood. Love your work.

Even if you earn zero euros, you can still declare all the your expenses (e.g Tuition fee). How much you will get back it depends on finanzamt

Hi, Thank you for the video. I have certain doubts which need clarification. It would be great if you could answer them. I started my studies in winter 2018 and have worked in 2019(part time jobs), but my earning was below 9000 euros. I'm still a student and currently I'm doing a HiWi job. I was planning to do my tax returns this year for 2018 and 2019. So am I entitled to receive tax returns for semester fees, stationery, electronics, etc. or is it like I'll receive only the Lohnsteuer I paid and will be eligible for the rest of the returns when I have an amount greater than 9000 per year or a permanent job? Also, what all tax returns am I eligible to obtain when being a student and earning less than 9000euros per year? Thank you :)

@@DesiInWonderland hi, Thanks for the info. So, is it a different procedure then with the Verlustvortrag? I couldn't actually find the pinned one though.

@Brother, as you had explained in the video that if someone had gross salary of 9000 euros in a year he would be eligible for the tax returns. It does not matter if you are student or not. I want to file tax returns for 2018 2019. In 2018, I did not do any work. But in 2019 I was able to earn 9k euros annually as a student. Will I also get the internship payment, university fee, transport fee for 2018 as well as I have not earned money in that year. ? I also want to mention that I do not want to wait till I get a full time job. I want to file tax returns on student status.

2019 is not finished yet..... You can only apply for taxes once the year is finished and get your annual payment summary... I would suggest read the pin post and watch all the parts as well... You can apply for taxes during your studies but keep that in mind that you can get back what you have paid as taxes (only lohnsteuer). Suppose in total you have paid 1000 euros but the tax return that you have claimed is 1500 euros then this 500€ you can carry to the next year...

Hi, Thank you for the video. Its a great work man!! My question is, I had taken a student loan to do my masters from my home country and recently completed filling it in. But I have paid a good amount of interest to the base amount I took. Can I file this in my tax return? If so, I started my master's in Feb 2017 and finished in September 2019. So in which year can I file this? Thank you and stay safe:)

As far as I know .. No you can't claim that.... you can claim you study expenses as I mentioned in my video but this loan also covers your private life expenses. So I don't think it is possible. But I will look into it and get back to you... If I don't reply to this comment in next few weeks then this means it is not possible....
