Hi Jibran, Thank you for this amazin video. I have a quick question. I did my masters from Oct-2018 to oct-2021. Since Nov-2021 I have been working. To add loss carry forward of my university fees and semester fee shoud I file my taxes for 2018 or should I do it for 2019? Also, under the AUSGABE, there seems to no longer be an option for entering the "Semestergebühren" unless I click on the checkbox that either says "Zweitausbildung". Have there been any changes? Thanks in adavance.

Thankyou so much jibran for such useful demo and information. I wanted to ask, if as a student we want to apply for tax returns of 3 past years, shall we use another tax app rather than wundertax or we can still do that with wundertax too? Asking, as i read on google, and also a bit about how tax fix allows you to apply for several years together.

Hello I have 2 questions about this , as I am filling the tax return the refunded amount did not change since the first step which was only the amount of my income tax 530 Euro from my part-time job, so all the expenses I added later like education cost , transportation ... were not added above is that because my income tax is something fixed and the other cost the tax office will have to review and see what costs will be counted or refunded fully for me or there is a problem , my 2nd question is a question I keep getting regarding degrees obtained before 2021 , I did get my bachelor degree before 2021 but it was outside of Germany so do they mean by this question only degrees obtained in Germany or overall , thanks in advance and great work as always this is really helpful

Amazing video, thanks a lot! I still have a curiosity though. After filing in my first tax return (for 2015) it turns out that it is much lower than what you get back, while the values that I filled in are quite similar to yours. Would you have any clue if the website is nowadays charging more for their service? It just somehow doesn't feel right..

Hello Jibran, Thank you so much for such a nice and informative video. I need to file my tax for 2018 when i was student. In 2018 I worked parttime and taxes deducted in year just showing 5 euro in lohnbescheinigung. Since after studies i am searching job rightnow so i dont have 9000 euro income in 2022. Should I file for loss carryforward for 2018 or just normal tax filing? Also can I get student benefits of 2018 or not? Since I will be in 5th year in 2023 when i get job then will i be benefited with this 2018 tax filing rightnow if its losscarryforward? Please let me know as sson as possible as only few days left for tax filing of 2018. Thanks in advance.

I think you are confusing the income tax (Lohn steuer or Einkommensteuer) with the pension insurance (Renteversicherung).. You only reduce your income tax when you apply for tax return but when you leave Germany then you can get back your pension insurance.... but this depends on many factors even I don't know the exact rule... I would suggest if you ever leave Germany then go to the Renterversicherung office and ask them if you can get back your pension money... :) Good luck

Hello Jibran, Thank you for such a nice video and explanation. I better need to understand my case for filling tax returns. I started working as research in August 2018 and living in student apartment with Tax class 1 then in April 2019 i changed my status from single to married and moved out from that place. Now i need to know show i file tax returns separately i.e. (Aug18 to Apr 19) and (Apr 19 to Present) or make it combine i.e (Aug18 to Present). Thank you, I am looking forward for your suggestions.

a person apply for taxes per year so for 2018, you apply in 2018 and for 2019 you apply in 2019 .. but as you got married in 2019, you can apply this year taxes as a married person. They will count the complete year with the married person tax cateogry.. and in wundertax you have this option where you can add the duration of stay at one place and then duration of stay at another place... I think you can add that in your "Fahrten zur arbeit"

Hi Jibran, thanks a lot for the detailed info!! Some questions based on the following background: - I want to claim the tax return for my master studies for the years 2019, 2020 and 2021. - I started working full time from September 2021. - I am planning to apply for tax return in the beginning of 2023 Question 1: While applying for the tax return for the 3 years via WunderTax as a student , in the 'income section' should I choose the option of: option 1= 'I have been identified as having a loss carry forward from the previous year and am able to claim any remaining losses this year' OR option 2= 'I received income as an employee' and fill up the info as per my Lohnsteuerbescheinigung individually for all three academic years (since I have started earning now)! Question 2: Once I apply for the tax return for the year 2021 as a student, would I be able to claim the tax return for 2021 as an employee again (after switching to the employee account)? Question 3: Given my case, when does it makes sense to apply for the tax return to get the most out of it? (My overall academic expenses for 3 years were around EUR 12000). If I apply now, would the tax office consider only the taxes I paid working for last year (only 4 months, Sep 2021 to Dec 2021)? Can you please advice when it would be best to claim such amount? Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Hi Jibran, thanks for your informative video. I still have a confusion. As I started my studies in 2017 and did some student jobs here and there in city X but now I have moved to a different city Y. In between I had different addresses as well. Since my job started only in 2021, I can file taxes for the years 2017-2020. 1) However, when I am filling my personal details, the address should be where I am currently registered to(city Y) right ? 2) Also, which tax office should I select for that year ? Should it be from City X or the one which the website automatically selects depending on my present address(in City Y) ? 3) When you are filing your tax returns through this website, I noticed that it says "Ausgaben (als Student)", wherever for me it is only as an employee, so it kind of doesn't give me an option for semester fee, rather it gives me an option if I had any contribution in associations such as alumni associations or so. Is there any particular setting that is needed to apply as a student ?

Hey. This is really a very informative video. I have one question here related to the Finanzamt column (shown at 2:44). I was a student last year and switched jobs in between. From Jan to September my Lohnsteuerbescheinigung has Finanzamt as Munich. And from October to December, I was doing two jobs. For the first job, Finanzamt is Koblenz and for the other one it is Kaiserslautern. While filling the tax return, in the Finanzamt column do I need to fill the one which is closest to me?

@DesiInWonderland
@DesiInWonderland 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Yogi.. You can do your 2017 tax return in 2019. It is not a problem but I would suggest please watch the first part of the video. You might understand a bit more about tax returns... About the address, it depends where you are entering that address because if you are entering it in the field where the software has to calculate the distance between the university and the library then in this case you have to enter the 2017's address... but if you are entering it for the personel data then you enter your current address because finanzamt need it for the correspondence. One more thing, if you are using Wundertax website then I would suggest please use these links . For Students (German version): bit.ly/2p84yun For Employee (German version): bit.ly/2mMmppU For Students & Employee(English version): bit.ly/2osBD3O If you create a new account with the links in the description. You get 5 euro discount on your first tax declaration. P.S. Keep that in mind. You can only get 5 euro account if you are creating a new account using these links. Existing accounts are not eligible for it. :)

Hello, Thank you for the nice video. Please help me in understanding this further. (a)I would like to know (wrt Intro part of your videos): - If I now, (before June this year), file for taxes for example say 2015, 2016, 2017. - Can I come back after this financial year and file taxes for 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021? (b) The costs for 3 years together on the suggested site would be less, compared to cost for filing for one year. Here 3 years implies 3 financial years ? eg. 2015, 2016, 2017 would be 3 years, or these could be combined into 1 tax filing form? Please let me know.

I am not married and never filled this form for any married person but I guess first you have to select your tax class. After that all the forms will change accordingly.... As you said your wife is a house wife then she will not have any earning statement. I am assuming here that when you wrote "Joint statement" you meant to say "Yearly Salary statement or summary" . In your case, only you will only get your salary statement, not your wife....

Thankyou very much for this informative video. Since i am filling my tax returns for first time for year 2020, i have some queries as stated below 1) i have paid 2 times semester fees so i should add sum of both in semester fee contribution for year 2020. and in 2019 i have paid semester fees as well for my first sem when i started my masters , so that i have to claim in financial year 2019 or 2020? 2) you said something about previous year losses upto 110 euros. Can we claim that and if yes than under what category of the form it is to be filled ?
@DesiInWonderland
@DesiInWonderland 3 жыл бұрын
1.) you can sum up two semester fees for 2020 and for 2019 you do it separately for that year. 2.) I think that is the lumsum amount for stationaries.. if you have spent more than that and also have receipts than you can also add that

Hi Jibran, Thanks for the useful video. I have read pinned comment. But had a concrete question regarding wundertax. I was a student in Germany from 2015-2019. I started working fulltime from 2020. Question 1: Considerung 4 year rule you mentioned, Can i claim tax return from 2017-2019 as a student? Or can I claim also from 2015 (7 year rule for students) If yes, is it ~30 euros all together or ~30 euros per year? Question 2: For claiming tax returns as an employee in 2020, do i have to create a new wundertax account or can i use my student wundertax account only to file tax return? PS. I clicked on the link of your with student and employee option. But it is showing only as employee and no student. So i am a bit confused. Thank you very much in advance for your time.
@DesiInWonderland
@DesiInWonderland 3 жыл бұрын
1.) That 7 year rule applies only when you have done your devalaration every year even if it is a verlusvortrag. if you didn't do that then you can only claim last 4 year. And 30euros is for one year but you can buy a package of 4 years in Wundertax when you go to payment and then you can use that 4 year package for your all four years. 2.) I think for this it is best to contact wundertax support because I think they should implement a feature where you can seclect whether you are doing it as a student or as an employee.. Actually you can use the same form for student or employee as well but it might be difficult if you are doing it for the first time. It would be great if you do it with just one account just ask wundertax support for it.. Good luck

Hi Jibran, Thank you very much for sharing such an informative video. Glad to know that you also studied renewable energies. I have a few questions. Here is my general background for your info: - My masters study period: September 2019 to March 2021 - Started my full time job this year in September 2021 - I want to claim taxes for my academic period from September 2019 until now. Question a) Should I create an account as an employee or as an student on the wundertax website to claim my academic expenses? b) Can I claim the taxes for the year 2021 at the end of this year in December 2021 or should I apply in early January 2022 to claim taxes for all the previous years? Please share your valuable suggestions on how to move forward... :) Thank you very much in advance.

I will mention this stuff also in the next part of this video and also share my tax return. When do you have to pay tax in Germany? If your taxable income (more to this later) exceeds 9000€ single and 18000€ married in a calendar year. You pay tax For 2019 the tax-free allowance has increased to 9168€ single and 18336€ married per annum. Do students earn tax-free or get everything back? No, students also have to pay tax if their income is above tax-free allowance. When is the deadline to file a return? - May 31 of the following year for compulsory filers (people who had more than 1 source of income, who changed job, where the spouse is also working) - Four years for non-compulsory filers Why is tax deducted, why to file the return and what is taxable income? Your HR knows how much your monthly payment is and how much you will get paid in one particular year so they deduct tax monthly assuming it will stay the same and this is your actual taxable income and forward it to tax office. They also know if you are married or have kids, etc and consider these factors to have it more accurate. What tax office or your HR doesn't know are your werbungskosten (tax or work related expenses) like your monthly travel tickets to work, a laptop and a chair you bought for working from home or money you sent to your parents. So the main goal is to show maximum expenses to reduce your taxable income. E.g.: you earned 24000€ in 1 year and your HR deducted tax from your salary monthly seeing you earn 2000€. So your tax was deducted from 24000€. Now you file return and show that you sent 3000€ to your parents, you moved from one city to another and paid 2000€ for the transportation and renovation of a new place, you bought books, computers and paid for online courses another 2000€. So now you request by filing a return to the tax office to recalculate your return by deducting these expenses. So now if all expenses are accepted, the tax office will calculate the tax on your new taxable income (i.e. 24000-3000-2000-2000-tax free allowance-child free allowance, etc.) and give you back the difference. Can students claim their study costs of past years after they finish the study and start working (as the guy is suggesting in the video)? Not directly. They have to carry losses of every year forward to the next year (Verlustvortrag). That means if a student had study-related expenses and didn't earn in that year, he/she can file a Verlustvortrag and carry these expenses to next year and then to next year and then to another one for seven years (not four) and as soon as you earn good money you can take these expenses to that year. Keep in mind if you are a bachelor student, the chances are very low to carry your losses forward. You can carry only study-related costs to another year and not e.g. money you sent to parents. To carry forward your losses you have to file a tax return for each year like a normal tax filer with the same forms. How about sites like germantax.de? I know of many people who actually had no expense at all and did try to calculate return through online sites and it showed them back payment although they were suppose to get a return. I would never recommend someone to use these sites. You can always go to Lohnsteuerhilfeverein in your city to get it done cheaper. What costs can you add to lower your taxable income? Basic principle: Everything which has a connection to your work can be added as werbungskosten. If you buy a tie and suit to attend your friend's wedding, it is not accepted but if you buy a tie and a suit because you work in sales, bingo. The costs related to your studies (because studies are also connected to career), the money you sent home, charity, double household (if your spouse is living in another country), cost of family reunion, etc. are Sonderausgaben/Außergewöhnliche Belastung. Which can be added to tax declaration as well.
