I used to have really bad panic attacks. Part of the problem when they start is that you don't know what's going on and the fear of them becomes a trigger in itself. I haven't had one for so long now, even though I often feel anxious. The key for me was when I stopped trying to be the big man, stopped trying to soldier on and took time to understand why I felt that way. Talking to a counsellor was important - ironically, the people closest to you are the last people you can really open up to, both because you don't want to seem vulnerable and because often you want to protect them. Another key thing is this tactic: when you feel anxious, stop everything. Don't try to power through, just stop and take all pressure off yourself. You can always go again when you're feeling better. Hope this helps anybody out there who's struggling.

You sir is what i miss most about my Dad, genuinely down to earth with real person problems. No fake pretence or click bate. True gentleman through and through 🍻 i’ve learnt so much from your energy. I have been beaten up by panic attacks and i thought is was low sugars every time very similar feeling. The angry i got from not understanding was horrific. Your honesty has enabled me to see it’s not always black and white an whilst my health is very bad my mind is much more at piece. I don’t wanna go angry i wanna go free. Thank you as always 🙏

The months I've spent watching your output and information has spurned me into the care system. A long process of acceptance given my criminal record but its historical with no blips since 1998. I feel a new beginning for me after years of alcohol and drug use. No crack or heroin.... I always scared away from these things. Keep up the good work sir x

Did your panic attacks start during your time in the Ways? I have anxiety disorder - which often develops into severe panic - and that all started during a stay in B Wing DFU, HMP Manchester, 25 yrs ago. Never been in trouble before or since, and to be honest, were it not for half a dozen lying, corrupt NCS cops, should never have been there at all. But... I know the feeling well: fearful that something terrible is going to happen - to the point at which you're actually convinced it's going to happen, and the adreniline starts flowing. Then come the shaking/trembling and cold sweats. It's bloody awful. 25 yrs on and I've finally admitted to myself that I have a problem. I downloaded your book on Kindle and to be honest, it took me back there so completely that I had to stop reading it.

There's probably a Buddhist Chaplain in your prison. He or She can teach you meditation. It'll probably be Samatha (Calm Abiding, Serenity) Vipassana (Insight) or Zen (Silent Illumination). Meditation helps many people in the Services to let go of Anxiety, PTSD, Combat Stress and other Mental Health issues.

Thanks for talking about this, you're doing a great job with the channel all round. A couple of questions coming from what you have said here... You mentioned sexual favours for protection and the impression I took from this was that the inmate giving the favours was doing this voluntarily to get something he wanted/needed. Do you know of incidents where the guy was pressured into giving these favours instead of getting a kicking? I have heard on other podcasts about these guys being pimped out in American prisons for the benefit of the tougher guy. Or on a different tangent do relationships occour within the prison, be that sexual or otherwise and how does this pan out both in terms of other inmates and if one of them gets released or moved can this cause problems ?

Hi mate did you watch the strangeways riot documentary last week? If so what's your thought's? Did you know anyone who was on the programme? I wasn't an offer then when it happened but I remember it on TV I was an officer in a very well known victorian prison in London so probably wouldn't have been drafted in anyway even if I was in service then Stay safe pal love your Vlogs

Unless you have experienced panic attacks people will never understand the sheer terror you feel when having one, they come out of the blue and theres is absolutely nothing you can do about it, but once you learn to deal with them it becomes easier. Try to breathe through it.

Yeah me too. I remember the exact moment it started. Major chances were happening in my life. Lost job, lost girlfriend, lost car. I suppose you could say it was a bad year, but I was only young still, 23 -24, so decided to use the money I saved and go travelling around the world for laughs. Prepping for this event, I remember going to a surfer shop in the Mander Center, Wolverhampton. The shop assistant guy in there immediately made me feel uncomfortable, like I wasn't the sort of customer they were looking for. It was an expensive shop, maybe he thought I was shoplifting. Not sure if it was how I was dressed or what but it was obvious, always dressed in suit and tie normally. I had never had this feeling before, like I was despised, it was palpable. And then it happened. I continued to look at things but it was obvious to me that something serious was going on. I left the shop and went to sit on a bench. Stayed there for 15 mins or so and then it went. I was absolutely shocked and devastated. After that time happened on a regular basis. I'm over fifty now and don't get them anymore but had them for years and years. Got used to them in the end. I knew exactly what to do. Just sit and deep breath and eventually it would subside. Funny things, just sharing.

Another good video. Why don’t you go back to try and help out, advisory type role?. I’ve done plenty jail in and around Glasgow, barlinnie etc and the system needs screws and cons who have plenty of experience of how things work so they can make a difference and make things far. It’s all only what both make it but I believe you could probably make a difference for the better 🙏 . Godbless 🙏

If the officer on G wing refused to do anything with regards to your suspicions about the murderer being a bully, why did you and your other colleague not report the him to his superior? After all, part of your job is making sure that the health and well-being of all of the prisoners is in tact. Julie Gill, Glasgow, Scotland.

Evening Sam 👍 Quick question... Do people in prison these days grass each other up ? Like if someone had been battered, would they tell a prison officer who did it, or keep quiet ?

Nobody can have any idea what a panic attack is like or about unless they have one. They will f know then. They will spend the rest of their life in fear waiting for the next one. It's not about weakness or being feart of anything It's just THERE.
