62 Wasted
1
In 1972 I was washing dishes,
At the local Elk’s Club,
The plates and such went into a machine,
And I washed the pans in a tub.
2
The working hours were terrible,
And the pay sure wasn’t cool,
I was getting the GI Bill,
And working my way through school.
3
Now for the embarrassment,
And this might make you cringe,
I saw half a lobster tail on a plate,
Heading for the garbage bin.
4
Have you ever noticed that while alone,
In a story sad but true,
Your behavior is quite different,
From when others are watching you.
5
I had never tasted lobster,
So I put the plate aside,
I needed some time to think,
And a clever place to hide.
6
I pretended I didn’t notice it,
And looked around so I could see,
If anyone was suspicious,
And was watching me.
7
Okay, I admit it and I gave in,
Waiting until everyone was gone,
I ate that hunk of lobster meat,
And it didn’t take me long.
