64 Year-Old Convair 340 Startup, Taxi & Takeoff From Victoria Int'l Airport (YYJ)

Kelowna Flightcraft operates a cargo flight between Victoria and Vancouver with a Convair 340. The pilot very kindly allowed me to take a look around the plane and even go inside. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to take any footage inside. This particular 340 was built in 1955 and was used by the U.S Navy. After eventually being sold to KF Aerospace, the plane was stretched 18 feet and the cockpit was updated as well.

I worked on converting a couple of these. A few perhaps interesting insights: These were all ex-US Navy C-131 Samaritans that were taken out of storage in Arizona for conversions. While similar to the Convair 340 and 440 in many ways, there are a few differences. Most notably is the door to the lower cargo hold is much further forward on the C-131 (which isn’t a cargo hold). These aircraft were converted straight from their original configuration. They were never Convair 580s or any other variant of turboprop conversion. The tail surfaces are the original size, rather than the enlarged surfaces of the 580. The reason the 580 had enlarged surfaces was because of the higher powered engines, but the longer fuselage arm of the 5800 made the smaller surfaces more effective so it was unnecessary to make them larger. The engines are Allison 501D-22Hs with Hamilton Standard propellers. While approved for use on the Convair 580 as an optional power plant vs the standard 501D-13s with the square-tipped Aeroproducts propellers, the 5800 requires the D-22Hs. The Goodyear brakes are identical to those on most Convairs... however, due to a fire as a result of RTO testing during certification, all AN hydraulic fittings were changed from aluminum to stainless steel. The cockpit is equipped with a four tube EFIS system which seems very rudimentary by today’s standards but was absolutely space age for what is normally in a Convair cockpit.

Calvin Nickel Thanks for the info! I knew it was an ex-US Navy aircraft, but not much besides that. Do you happen to know why the different engines use the rounded props and/or what effect they have?

Excellent view of the old plane!!! Great takeoff view the camera shakes are understandable it was probably very exciting to see the old plane!! :)

That's not a Convair 340, but instead a Model 5800 - a stretched version of the Convair 580. The 340 was a piston-powered aircraft.

@@nybotor1 How about changing the video's title to what this aircraft is, though, huh? I'm telling you, this is a Convair 5800 freighter, NOT a Convair 340. The only model 340's I know that are still in existence are the ones known as SAAB 340's, a now mostly-retired (and out-of-production) but fairly modern turboprop airliner and utility transport. And that modern passenger turboprop airliner that arrived ahead of the 5800's takeoff is a de Havilland DHC-8 'Dash-8' Q400!
