Bought my son his first set of e-drums this week, took a fair amount of research to find what you just explained in 5 minutes, got a bundle deal in the end which came with everything needed, but the 'extras' are not of the highest quality and will probably need replacing sooner rather than later.

Great points! I was actually surprised when I was initially looking at the TD-07DMK, because it looked like it came with the double kick pedal, and it wasn't grayed out at all. Then reading the fine print, down below ALL of the pictures with it in them, I learned it wasn't included. I knew most of the other stuff wasn't included, but the kit pictures made it seem like it came with it. While I was watching some of your other videos, I realized the TD-17 kit didn't come with a USB cable. I haven't had a "printer style" USB cable in so long, so I actually had to buy one.

Very good information. Thank you. Here in the uk there is a drum set available called the Fame DD one XT Simon Phillips professional E drum set. Would roughly cost about $900 whereby you get all mesh drums which consist of a 12” snare, 4 x 10” toms , plus 12” mesh kick drum, including pedal. Last but not least, high hat with a proper mechanical stand plus 2 crash cymbals and a ride. Admittedly the module is not in the class of Roland but the 8 available drum kits were sampled by Philips himself plus room to input more sounds and create user kits. I’ve only been playing about a year and you can call me naive but that sounds a hell of a lot bang for your buck!. So I’m very very tempted to purchase this as my first upgrade from my finger killing rubber padded Carlsboro! I have looked at the Roland KV27 but at over $3000 without high hat stand and kick pedal etc seems rather excessive for a mere grade 3 player like me.... However perhaps the author of this video or anyone else in the drumming world know would like to comment on this kit because we have a saying in the UK that if something seems too good to be true then it probably is. Over to you guys.

I went to a new(er) Guitar Center in Seattle and got to try out a Roc 'n' Soc throne. To be honest, I thought the rave reviews were a lot of hype...until I sat my fat butt down on that drum throne. OMG!!!! Yeah, it's not overinflated hype. Roc 'n' Soc thrones RULE. Worth every penny.

Possibly a drum key. I've never bought a new edrum set, so don't know for sure. I think Rolands usually come with them. Possibly cases if you're gonna do gigs. Maybe a floor mat if you don't have carpet at your home and/or venue.

totally agree with the drum throne. i used to sit on a shitty small kitchen stool which felt like it would cave in any second and since i got my quite decent (100 bucks) drum throne i don't just have a better posture, i also feel way more comfortable with actually using my whole body to play the drums.

6:00 im using sennheiser momentum on ear with my td17. I started using them because i once bought them for cheap money, pluged them into my drumset with the mindset "that will do for now i hope, i will upgrade when i will have the money" and they sound really good with the drumset and i stayed with them.

I play yamaha dd75. You can record great covers. The pads are on the elevations, so they reflect the real drums much more than the alesis pads. Especially if you tilt the set properly on a good snare drum stand. Foot controllers are good for home use. You can play nice things on them, but I don't think they are comfortable at a longer concert. then it is worth buying KU100 and H440. I record drum covers for home use and the set really has a lot of possibilities in my opinion - it takes up little space, which is very nice when playing in events. There is no need to carry heavy boxes. However, I would prefer them to throw in the Ku100 and Hh40 pedals and increase the price. The kit itself is great.

It started with a deal on a vintage Simmons SDS9 module and pads. I figured I'd play it with my drum machine and stash the pads under my bed or something. But the allure of the iconic hexagonal pads was too much. I spent more just on the stands and am still buying pieces for it, so I can learn to play it live.

I personally am considering a Roland TD25KV sometime next year(with a few extras like an electronic china cymbal, the roland bar to be used as a cowbell and surprise surprise nylon drumsticks), but life is unpredictable so for all i know that plan could get pushed back.

My kit hasn't arrived yet so I cannot say if it's the value I hope it is. But for all the gear that's MIA mentioned in this great posting, I hope it's as good as I'm hoping. Thomann Musichaus in Germany has house lines made in China that are good. I love my Harley Benton guitar. My drum kit bundle, in USD, is about $1100 landed to me in NZ. On it's way is my new Millenium MPS- 750x. It has bluetooth (possibly just to phone and not to headphones...I'll find out). I ordered an upgraded throne. Studio phones are SuperLux HD0681B which seem to be rated pretty well for budget studio phones and good for big ears like mine...I'll soon see. House brand maple sticks with nylon heads x3 sets. House brand 200watt amp/combo PA. I threw in their pocket mixer and a cable for a bass guitar I was given so the amp can do double duty. The kit is all mesh heads and multiple triggers on each drum or cymbal. Comes with bass drum kick pedal. I am sure it's by far the best value kit bundle going, but I shall see how the quality is. I will repost if I remember after it's set up. BTW, I am not a drummer. Perhaps my son will be. Meanwhile I hope learning basics on drums will improve my guitar playing. My chronic tennis elbow problem in both arms will likely be a dealbreaker for me as a drummer.

I use shure se215 with my Yamaha dtx 502 module and it sounds sick. It handles the punch and the low end of the drums incredibly.

I’m not a drummer (I’m guitar/vocals) but I’d like to buy an electronic set to have of my own that can be used to gig with(for a consistent electronic live sound)- I’m already interested in something like an Alesis strike pad to add to a kit, etc but wondered about your over all thoughts on gigging with an electronic set. I understand not including hihat stand, kick drum pedal and throne on the a bit more expensive drum sets. They arent targeted towards rookie players who dont care what hardware they using but for a bit more experienced players and hardware choices are really subiective and its better for people to chose what they like and not overpay for something they wont want to use.

I recently started using a little bluetooth receiver plugged into the “aux in” socket on my kit so I can play along to music on my pc without the pain of cables. 25 bucks well spent.

I bought an alesis command over the weekend. Wasn't sure if I made the right choice compared to a Roland kit. Didn't realize Roland cheaps out on literally essential components. That's downright embarrassing. I was annoyed enough when I didn't get a drum throne!

The reason why Roland and others do not include pedals and hihat stands with kits is because pedals and hihat stands are a personal preference item. I don't want to pay $200 more for an e-kit for a pedal I don't want to play. Virtually everything on your list are personal preference items. All of your points are good for newbies to know though.

I’ve been looking at a 300.00 electronic drum set not planning on taking it on the road. I want to learn well enough to accompany myself on other instruments. I got the impression that the 300.00 drum kit is a waste of my money. I’d like him to explain the cons of buying a 300. 00 kit. My first guitar was an acoustic held together by glue that didn’t work. On my Alexis DM6, my kick drum has been acting weird lately. When I play my kick drum, it has not made a sound unless I move the cable almost at the end then it works but sometimes it makes a sound but most of the time it does multiple triggers from one hit. Do you know why this is happening?

If you want GOOD drum sounds, you'll need software like Steven Slate Drums, Superior Drummer, etc. That's probably a minimum of $150. But WAIT, there's more! In order to hear those sounds, you'll need a way to get the midi data from your drum module into your PC, so you'll want to get an Audio Interface (to minimize latency). Maybe you can get a used one for $50, but it's easy to drop $200. And also, you'll want a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) so you can run your software and record. Fortunately, we have Reaper, which can basically be used for free, but also has a $60 price tag. Very cheap compared to the alternatives. In my opinion, these are worth every penny, as stock module sounds mostly suck, and software samples sound incredible and make playing SO much more fun! One more thing to consider, is that if/when you decide to upgrade your kit with additional pads or cymbals, they usually don't come with any mounting hardware or cables. That can run an extra $10-$50 depending on your needs. A few other accessories- Stick bag, Drink holder :) Rug or super strong velco/adhesive to keep your pedals in place, Cable ties.....

I have two comments on sound for your drum kit. First, if you're on a budget it's pretty common to see powered PA speakers in the 10", 12", & 15" range on sale online at places like Musician's Friend or Guitar Center (and sometimes even Amazon) for a reasonable price. And if you catch them on MF's Stupid Deal of the Day, the savings can be incredible enough that you can fit a pair into your budget (50% off or more). I've put together several dirt cheap live sound and karaoke systems for a couple of smaller local clubs this way, to good effect (they were fraternal organizations that feature live bands and karaoke weekly, BTW, the VFW and the Eagles). Secondly, I think it's misleading to advise people to avoid these amps for their electronic drum kits, particularly if they are on a budget as it's worth trying out before spending the cash. If they have an older amp then yeah, they may want to get a powered PA speaker or a drum amp rather than trying to make it work. But a more recent combo amp with a MP3 input (and designed for music playback) might work out just fine for them in terms of the range the amp is capable of handling, they just need to make sure to use the clean channel and turn off any other effects in the chain. But the simple fact is these days most bass and guitar combo amps intended for practice have jacks for a MP3 player so that you can jam with your own backing tracks or other music, and so actually have a much wider frequency response to accommodate the MP3 playback and are more PA systems than instrument amps! I know that older equipment tended to be purpose built to service the type of instrument it was designed for, and suspect that pro level equipment is still that way somewhat to. But since the late '80s, a lot of the equipment is better designed with new innovations in speaker technology and components, now you can hear not just the base frequency of notes being played but several harmonics, making for a richer and fuller sound. Even some of the crappiest equipment of today would have been 'to die for' 30 or 40 years ago, rivaling that time period's studio grade (same with photography technology, BTW)!

It's surprising that the EDrum market or websites don't allow you to build exactly what you want, piece by piece. Like building a PC. I guess that has something to do with the manufacturer supply chain in terms of availability, but adding thew exact stick, bass pedal, hi hat and snare stands doesn't seem to be rocket science in terms of website design. Baffling and frustrating.

I think actually a lot of these things are fore-gone because most people that are going to spend even S1,500 on an e-kit have been playing for quite a while and the already have a pedal, hihat stand and throne they already like. And as far as an amp... I would assume at least 80% of people buying an e-kit want it to practice more quietly than an acoustic. And EVERYONE has some kind of headphones. My $10 skull candy headphones sound ok. Obviously my AKG Studio phones are far superior. But any headphones will work. Plus NO other electric instruments come with an amp.

Something very significant you didn't mention is that every V-Drum kit comes AS-IS, and if you want more triggers, you have to buy that PLUS the mounting hardware. The Roland TD-50 is a pathetic drum set out of the box.
