Can You Use Brushes With Edrums?
• Can You Use Brushes On...
1. Buy a ROCK SOLID drumset. This can’t be overlooked. The harsh truth is that if you want a drumset to last 10+ years, stay away from MOST Kat/Alesis/Simmons drumsets. Roland and Yamaha are the way to go.
2. If you’re going with a mesh drumset, you WILL have to replace the mesh heads over time. BUT you can cut down on how many mesh heads you have to buy, by using CLEAN CUT drumsticks. A shredded drumset can shred a mesh drumhead. It can snag a head and slowly slice a hole right through it. I’ve done this. Check the tip too!
3. KEEP THE RUBBER RIMS ON!! I’ve gone without the rims on. The sticks will get damaged, and begin to hurt the mesh heads and the cymbals. The cymbals visibly wear faster, I’ve seen it.
4. The kickdrum is susceptible to extreme damage if you aren't careful. I’ve sliced through a mesh kickdrum head when using a Iron cobra beater that turned sideways. Same with trick beaters. Also, stick to plastic beaters with mesh heads. The felt ones will damage mesh heads if given enough time. A quick work around is to just use a regular kickdrum patch. It will protect your mesh, and a patch is alot cheaper to replace than a $35 mesh head.
5. Use padding when moving gear
6. Certain rubber cleaners claim to increase the lifespan of any rubber you use it on. Meaning it won’t crack and turn a weird gray color as fast. So that could definitely be a part of a cleaning regime. DR Kenndo or 303 aerospace cleaner
7. If you use brushes, go with nylon ones. Stay away from metal.
It all comes down to how many hours of play you’re doing. Honestly, if you hit a cymbal with a stick for 10 years, some day it’s going to break. You kinda just gotta accept that, and replace it when it happens. But it all comes down to tip 1. If you buy the good stuff the first time, it won’t fall apart year 2.

solid tips Justin. I bought a used Roland TD-10x mesh kit myself. It's been well maintained, easilly 10-12 years of use on it when I bought it, and I beat the he'll out of it every day. It really comes down to initial quality and then maintaining that.

I bought a td10 used with extras for $3000 in 2000. I’m a heavy hitter and a daily player. I still have original heads for the toms and snare but had to buy a new base drum head, I also replaced all the foam coned a couple years back. 23 years later and this kit still kicks ass.

This is great Justin.Thanks for the videos! I have a pair of "Ahead" plastic drum sticks that I have been using since 1995! Actually, they have metal handles and replaceable plastic top halves. They have no splinters and are hollow so they are not too hard on drums. I love them! They have a nice weight balance.

Great helpful tips here. Thanks man. I’m 15 and I bought an Alexis surge mesh kit because it was all I could afford and the best in my budget. I’ve had it for about 3 months now and, as I’m a musician playing in churches and Christmas carols events and sometimes public youth events, my drum kit is used on a regular basis, if not every day. I’ve noticed that the cymbals, as they are those cheaper, lesser quality Madeli cymbals that you showed in the video, are starting to wear a bit on the ends of the rubber, the hihat especially. I would much appreciate it if you have any tips on increasing the life of those, as I would prefer the kit to last as long as it can.

it went surprisingly well, I've only been playing 6 mos although I've spent a LOT of time behind the kit inn those 6 mos. I was petty calm until I say down and then my hands started shaking but I was able to channel my anxiety into playing and got a lot of compliments so I think it went well I absolutely loved it. I bought this kit after a lot of research but side I really couldn't afford the 30 I went with the 25 and I'm really happy with how ut plays although I wish I would've got the KV, but I'm just going to buy am extra crash and Tom.

I’ve had my DTX 9750K for over 10 years. Played almost every weekend, 3-4 45-50 min sets (clubs, corporate, casinos, festivals) and for me the cymbals/hats go out first. I put an extended warranty on my kit and pay it every year through the store I bought them. It’s about $100+ and if something craps out they send it out for repairs and give me a loner. If it’s unfixable they give me a new one. That’s it. It’s covered under the extended warranty. Develop a good relationship w/ your dealer. To also extend the life of my pads I put them on a rotation schedule. I number them and then record on the set list which order from that gig. Then I rotate them for the next gig and record that set up. Example is my main crash on my left gets the most action or upper rack/lower floor you then rotate them for next gig so that pad doesn’t get the same abuse. I find it really helps.

Thanks for the videos man! I just got my first e drum kit, a Roland td17kvx. I had a question about hitting the sensor beneath the mesh heads. I sometimes come close to hitting the circular sensor that sits under the mesh head near the rim on 2 of my drums. Is this a serious issue? Are these sensors built to be whacked on or is it something I have to be conciously avoiding as I'm playing? Id love for these to last as looong ad possible, especially because I emptied out my wallet on them. Thanks man

Great video man! A few things I would have added would be to one, use the thinnest sticks possible. That way the sticks themselves lessen the damage per hit. I believe it is a big problem especially with drummers that are just moving over to electronic drums and just assume they are as durable as the acoustic ones that you can use 2B sticks on. Also another point would be to lower the cymbals as much as you can stand so that the angle of hit is much less sharp which reduces the attack on the edge, which is what also usually caused the choke sensor and edge sensor to go more quickly. Lastly with mesh heads to not loosen the tension tooooo much because then the stick will actual dig much deeper into the head and can put the cone or cones inside at greater risk to be damaged over prolonged use.
@65Drums
@65Drums 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah you could prolong the life of the pad if you use really light sticks.. But I use whatever sticks I feel like ;)

I'm not sure if this would be in the same category of this video but you can use different manufacturer pads on an e-kit right? I have a kat kt3 and I was going to replace certain pads with either Yamaha or Roland pads. And also in using those silent tennis ball beaters that KAT has for their ekits and I was wondering if there's anything better to use. I use PDP pedals but I use the silent beaters instead of the beaters it came with. My kick pad still works great but some of the rubber on the pad is wearing out.

Funny, the two cymbals that came with my Roland TD-6V were the first (and only things) to go--the bow doesn't play the programmed sound on one (although it triggers the correct MIDI note, for some reason) and and the bow doesn't trigger occasionally on the other (although, again, the MIDI triggers correctly). And I am in no way a heavy hitter.

@@RapidVidsProductions True! You can always replace or trying to repair a broken pad or cymbal instead of getting a whole new kit. It doesnt even have to be from the same brand, since most electronic kits doesnt look too pretty to begin with. Also if your rack breaks, you can use acoustic stands.

I quit using wood tips with the vdrums pretty early.The mesh pads wear off the tip varnish, and then they mark up the cymbal pads.

65 Drums you have the black rubber cymbals. The Metallic Grey ones really get marks easily, though not permanent in my case.

My brothers td50 had those stick marks. When I pointed out to him that I never got marks like that from my nylon tips he switched.

I play using 7A anti vibe sticks with hand-sanded nylon tips (to remove the mold seams). Nice and easy on the equipment. There's just no sense in using a pair of baseball bats.

I wonder if it's better to use drum sticks with nylon tips than wood tips. Maybe there is no difference. Has anyone experienced some differences in pad wear or something?

In the past 7 years, I have cycled through almost every pad on my Roland Td-4kx. I've worn though: - 4 CY-8 cymbal pads - 1 PDX-8 Snare/Tom pad - 1 KD-8 Kick Drum (I mistakenly used a felt beater) Over the years, I've upgraded to: - 1 CY-12 R/C for my ride - KD-120 for my kick drum (and I use the plastic Roland-beater for safe-keeping) - TD-12 module - CY-5 for my crash So yeah, I suppose that I have a hybrid between a Td-4 and a Td-12 now. Those cymbal pads really eat away at your wallet over time though :/

Enough to wake the neighbors at night, and to break a pair of sticks on a rubber rim. I also apparently triggered a pack of coyotes beginning their assault with a single rim-shot. In all seriousness though, it got bashed by a bunch of my inexperienced friends a lot, along with at one point a bunch of high-schoolers thrashing on it while I wasn't supervising it (high-school battle of the bands). I've learned from my careless ways though, because my wallet has experienced some very repressive memories over the years.

I know this question may be completely out of contact to what you're talking about in this video. But, I am looking for the Roland td1kpx all mesh kit Kama with a portable design. Is there anyone in the United States selling this kid? If so, could you pass that information on to me. The only ones I see selling it is either Germany, or , England. Thanks!

Mine came with the TD-3, at the time I got a sick deal on the TD-20 module for $500 (it was the flagship at the time) but all I had was triggers so I picked up the td-3 for $500. The real problem I always had with that was misstriggering or double triggering.

One thing I can say is that he is right about alesis drum sets, They are not very durable. I bought a DM10 mkii pro from Amazon and I had to return it within a couple of weeks. But because they look so good and they are affordable When you compare Yamaha and Roland drums I decided to repurchase the Alesis DM10 mkii pro kit Again but this time I bought it with a 4 year protection plan.

I had an Alesis Crimson for 3 months and then a cymbal broke and then my snare went and then the hihat cymbal stopped triggering properly. Nothing but issues for me personally. I had to upgrade to a TD25 and I'm so much happier.

Hey Justin, nice videos! I learned everything I needed to make my decision on getting a td11k on your videos, its been a while since then and I found this on web studioscrapnsound.com/creating-a-drum-splitter-cable-for-the-roland-td-11/ what do you think about expanding the td11k the way that guy did? I think it may be risky but it will probably worth it
