I recently discovered your channel. I spent all day watching your video`s and I`m a huge fan. Your one hell of a mechanic. I was a mechanic for a few years before joining the Florida Highway Patrol when I was 25, I`m now retired and looking for a decent old VW beetle that`s all there to restore and drive. I love the old VW`s.
@jamesshanks26147 жыл бұрын
John Wingrider Best place to find restorable rust free bugs is the southwest Arizona, New Mexico Texas. I watch a VW shop in New York State that only works on air cooled bugs and he recently found a rust free 57 bug interior stripped ready for paint. Best of luck in your search. Retired in New Hampshire

The more I watch these restorations I think the best thing to do is disassemble totally, Layout with all pieces together. The floor on these VW s is very important. Trying to work on a unibody together is a pain. This man needs a better shop he is very good at what he does. He loves making the past come alive original and I really appreciate that. Takes time for perfection. Any garage would love to have him in it. Thank you for inspiring young men to do it right and guiding them through the hornet nests. They are not junk to a true car lover. I have always loved Bugs. Best economical car ever produced. They are disappearing in chop shops and that is very sad. I had an old VW body once all was missing but I put it in the yard on the ground and just sat inside looking out gave me much pleasure just sitting and dreaming of the many VWs I once had and the stories of the rides. Beer and a stereo and memories with a friend. Dogs cats a few possums hang out in it also in the winter months. An excellent dog house. Ha Ha. I repaired many cars and sold them not much profit but much enjoyed meeting friends who loved old cars. Expensive to restore but some are worth it. VWs and Mustangs were my favorites. I could have easily just lived in a gas station all I loved was there.

@guruoo4 жыл бұрын
A '65 Beetle was my first car as well. Can't forget that smell, which I understand comes from the material they used to cushion the seats. My next two cars, '73 and '74 VW model 181's (The Thing) had it, too. Wish I had kept them all.

Bruce, you are SO right! Back in '73, I had a '69, my brother in law had a '71, and my step grampa had a '65. They ALL had that distinctive aroma! A few years later, I had a '66, and then a '67. I believe it was probably the adhesive.

I dont think the engine is a loss really, as you said its worth the parts, strip it and dump the dead bits :-). Well done on the differential :-D, i bet the slip part can be plopped in without much trouble :-D. Nice grey beetle, its got a few bits wrong, but it looks like it will be a dream to work on, being so clean and nothing should be seized. My mate has an old car, the window is sticky on that too, ive messed around for hours trying to make it easyer to close, its more of a pain than i thought it would be, silicone spray helped.

Well, it is a Volkswagen engine, it would not surprise me at all if it was running on 2 cylinders, broken camshaft or not. It wouldn't have been running WELL, but it could have been running. That's a great score on the diff. Sometimes even if you're looking for a rare part, if you just keep looking you can be lucky and score the part for a give-away price...
@pontiacgrandprix7336 жыл бұрын
Extremely interesting and calming, watch at my night job while I'm doing paperwork, informative and not obnoxious
@queenofyeay7 жыл бұрын
Hell, you can't fool me, that was a win on that VW motor for $60 D-man! That air cooled thermostat is worth every bit of what you paid for the engine and even the tin is worth what you paid. Your price point was dead on, though in fairness to the guy that sold it to you, it may have still been running... just on three cylinders! Great score on the rear diff for the Tundra... sometimes things just fall into your lap!

Brings back some great memories. I owned a white 66 Bug with a red interior and a sun roof. Think I replaced every single part that was replaceable. Put 1600 cc bus engine in it. It would do 85 MPH. Unfortunately it was stolen and never recovered.
@jeffabney76297 жыл бұрын
That diff was a steal! Good job!
@jebsails28375 жыл бұрын
Too many memories. When installing the original VW tail pipes (exhaust tips) urban legend of the time (mid- 60's) instructed you to use a 3/4 in socket on a suitable extension to knock out the sound deadening material in the tail pipes. Supposedly increased the HP by 2% which on a 40hp engine was big! Carb jets were upgraded enlarged to those from a M-B Solex.

I messed around with VW,s back in the 70,s, I used to remove the flaps in the air shroud , remove the choke, use a paper air filter, and change jets, plus add an after market exhaust, and a oil filter kit, never had a problem until you mix lifters and cam shafts
@scottbrady74996 жыл бұрын
Back in the day, I drove a 67 in SF. For exterior locks and stuff- I would let WD-40 fight it out with the salt fog. On window felts, I used one of those little toothpaste tubes with graphite powder that locksmiths sometimes use on this and that.. with a modicum of success. And less smears on the glass that you get with oils and silicon gels. When the clutch exploded, I went to someone like yourself, who knew about such things!

I turned down a 1987 blazer today the guy said the clutch was dragging but on closer examination the throw out bearing was shot the clutch plates were worn down to nothing and it just had way too much body damage but the interior was clean lol So I said thanks but no thanks too much work for me. That body looks great on that VW and the interior so the linkage is messed up on the wipers and it needs flex in the brake lines no real bad fixes. Thanks for sharing.

I would check the hardware store for bronze bushing that would fit into the replacement lever arm. find a press fit or turn them on the lathe down for press fit, then drill and ream inside diameters for slip fit onto the shaft. Win some and lose some. Good rear end parts find. VW motor well you got so parts and that is what you priced it at instead of taking someonew word about condition. You just need to do the research before paying the price they ask. Keep up the good work on the very informative videos.

60 bucks for an engine is not a win but not a loss either. At least you scored on the rear end for you Tundra. Now I remember that when my VW beetle clutch would do what yours is doing it is a bad sign and was about to go out.

I was able to improve the window operation greatly on my 2000 CRV by lubing the window track felt with dow corning silicone oil, 1000 centistokes viscosity applied with cue tips running over all the glass touch points. This freed up alot of friction and allowed the power windows to operate normally.
