We constantly get requests to do 6G pipe welds to many different specifications. Today, we are going to go over one that is fairly common; 6" 6G 6010 Root with a 7018 three bead fill and cap.

I really like your videos. I have learned a lot. I'm a retired diesel mechanic and welding was part of my trade. People say you can't teach an old dog new tricks but this old dog has learned a lot thanks to you. Keep up the good work.

Your videos are extremely informational and show more of the real work situations us welders could face. I'm a welder for a large mechanical contractor and I've been in some spots so tight I've actually taken my hood off, jammed it between two pipes and looked through it. Anyways in regards to your 2hand vs one topic. The answer is simple in my opinion. Get comfortable. If you have to weld opposite hand, get comfortable and have a clear range of movement. The last test I took for a job I used a 15in crescent, a file, a jack stand, and my own knee as a support for my lag arm( I'm right handed). What I'm getting at for anyone new to pipe welding or getting ready to test, weld however is comfortable for you. As long as you follow the wps, how you weld it is on you. Great videos bob!

Cut down an old mask. To about 2 inches from the glass holder on each side. Then put a handle on it. You can most times get it in. Tight places. Or a monkey mask... I've used both lots on ships..

SirPlease accept my compliments. You are a natural instructor and communicator and I learn a lot just listening to you instruct while you weld. As a 72 yr old retired fighter pilot, who was told to get a hobby which would be humbling and challenging, I considered golf, fly fishing, chess or welding. Welding won out, and have been humiliated and challenged ever since. Again thanks for your focused instructional approach to this skill. Welding reminds me of air to air combat with the other guy keeping the advantage most of the time........................................Respectfully RJB

Talk about the shimmy's. I'm 54 and I've got them. And I have to take my glasses of to get a better view of the puddle. Here's another cry out for a 7018 root, fill and cap. I am practicing this at the moment. Getting better at it, but would love to see You do one. Keep those great videos coming Bob. I learn a lot from You. You and Jody Collier are the best at getting Your knowledge and experience across to the viewers. Thank You for that.

Another great video.Comfort is the key to putting down a good weld even though sometimes you need to weld in an uncomfortable position and hold on to something with one hand to do your welding.

Hey I don't care what anyone says, that was a great video Bob, great tutorial for guys tryna break out and get their 6g. The welds look real good too man, aside from what u pointed out, but anyhow I have yet to see a perfect "machine weld" from anybody, there's always gonna be some little defect or flaw - and anyways u already know a welder is his own worst critic! I weld steam pipe all day, (carbon steel) and them welds u threw down look sweet! Keep up the excellent vids man..

Bob, I really appreciate your honesty! I also really enjoy your videos. I too am 58 years old and only started welding about 5 or 6 years ago. It ain't easy at our age. You have had the advantage of learning to do it a young age and as you said, the muscles in your body were trained and still remember for the most part. Mine just won't take a hint! lol I struggle, but love doing it and strive to be better every chance I get! Keep up the great video series!

Rattletrap2 I took welding through a local college and attained a 2yr welding associates degree, unfortunately, I was unable to garner any certifications in any position or for any process. I studied and welded in "Stick", FCAW, MIG, & TIG. I have bend test passing coupons in FCAW(2positions, flat bevel plate), and MIG(1position, flat bevel plate). I know I need more, hood down, burning rod time to become a proficient welder. I have tried three times to get into union apprenticeship programs, but I feel like my age is a large factor in why I'm being turned down for apprenticeship programs. I am a Veteran of the Global War on Terrorisim and had hoped that being a Veteran would give a union a big list of benefits to hire me like the boost from Helmets to Hardhats program as well as any veteran based incentives for hiring vets and giving us a place to learn and earn. Obviously, I have been mistaken. I forgot to mention that I am 50 years old now and I was 48 years old when I graduated from welding school. I have been trying since then to get into a union due to the fact that I don't believe a fab shop will be interested in hiring someone who is still not proficient enough to weld consistently well. I do enjoy these videos, so keep them coming!

Bob you do an excellent job getting your point across and explain why you do what you do. As far as the one handed two handed comments its easy to make a comment from your arm chair when you have never burnt a rod in your life, us guys and gals who do it every day know what works and what is acceptable. Some times you have to do what you have to due to get the job done this is where experience and craftsmanship come in. If you want to be negative and rude there are plenty of other channels out there and you are free to do that there.

Great video and thanks for sharing. I'm a pipe welder from Louisiana working in the nuclear industry. I totally agree with you on being as comfortable as possible to take the test if the Inspector allows it. What ever it takes to make a good, sound weld.

hey bob im in college for applied welding and im at the end of the course and ive been practicing my 6010 roots in the 6g position with pipe ranging from 2"-6" schedule 40-120 for the pipefitters union. one thing i have figured out is once you get to 3 and 6 o'clock if you give the rod a 10-15 dagree push it helps alot with keeping the key hole consistent

Daniel push in what direction? I find I’m always fighting the keyhole once I get past 3-6 o clock unless I go with a really tight gap. Do you push it up away from the puddle or down towards the puddle?

Great video. I liked the 2 hand vs 1 hand topic at the end. I think a lot of it stems from the "golden arm" syndrome in industry. If you need to use 2 hands so be it. As long as you produce a quality weld it really doesn't matter how you do it. I think people get hung up on thinking you are less skilled if you have to use 2 hands.

Excellent, per usual. Who cares if you use something to brace yourself. All that matters is achieving an acceptable weld. I'd like to see some different weaved caps or maybe 6G FCAW.

As a prop , a " chain vise grip" can't be beat, fast , secure and you can position it in any position. Chain extensions can be purchased , makes welding pipe of any size , in position much easier.

I always do mine facing me and I always stick a old file in the pipe and rested my arm on and Jack stands either one facing either way don't matter to me any long as I get comfortable long as I do that my welds look good and run good and I pretty much do exactly how this guy did on any weld test is how I was taught on jobs to do it over fifteen or so years ago took me about 5 years to work up to fitter and a year and a half to really be a decent welder I still learn new things everyday all senarios are different more are the same Tig Welding was always my strongest process but I mostly worked in the chemical plants so Stainless was mostly what I weld it's a fun trade I enjoyed it still do but I got tired of chasing the work around the country so I started driving a semi truck about 10 years ago and I like it even more plus no more looking for a room or place to stay every trip outta town I live in my truck is comfy and alot better on your eyes and back to lol but I encourage anyone interested in this field to do it just like trucking I encourage that to both are great ways to earn a living

Hi Bob, plumbing apprentice here. Just had a quick question for you. What were you running at on your cap. My root and fill pass are almost perfect just when I go to cap I think mess up bead placement and start to undercut each side. Is the edge of your rod on the edge of your bevel and letting it flow on top or is your rod even with the edge of the bevel if that makes sense.

I keep seeing this particular welding machine on a lot of these videos. I have a lincoln 250 ranger, got a matco mig/tig welder, learned off my dads old Panasonic gun slinger, and now in the shop we have two top of line Miller mig welders. I know some machines work better then others. What machine is he using?

Bob a video on API 1104 test; both parts - 5g or 6g , 12" pipe using 5/32" rod for both the 6010 root and hot pass and 7018 fill and cap. Second part - 12" branch tee lay out, cut and weld.This is the test give to qualify for employment in North East Contractors

My dad was a welder for decades. He over the years did a lot of pipe welding from small to large up to 40 inch pipe. One place he worked they gave the guys the opportunity to take the 6g pipe certification test. 20 guys took the test. My dad was the only one who passed. Why how could that be? 7010 root pass 7018 cover. That’s a rod hardly heard of. It works great

The tests I did where smaller diameter pipes that was standard in the early 70 to late 80s.

Hi Bob, you've mentioned it before but here, in the UK; 6010 is really rare, I knew one chap that done a job with 6010/ 7010 vertical down but it's normally 7018 all the way here, vertical up obviously. Just different processes in different places I guess, anyway keep up the videos, they're brilliant. Cheers Andy.

Okay after watching a second time Iv concluded your root pass and 3,32 low hy amp settings seem normal. However your 1,8 and 5,32 amp settings seems VERY low. Are you compensating with the dig function? And if so please explain up or down. Lincoln has arc controle, Miller has a stiff soft controle and your machine has a dig function? I asume all these are the same. Could you please do a video explaining these settings and the appropriate times to use them? Thank you for your time.

Hello from Indiana. I’m a union BOIKERMAKER local 374 and we do tubes I’m doing a tube test soon and I noticed you’re using 3/32 at 80 Amps I’ve been told to run at 92 amps for a tube is there a difference I mean it’s basically a large tube right . Should I be turning my machine down or is it just that machine you’re running and for 1/8 inch 7018 we run at 120 amps

Can you please do a 2” SCH 160 6010 root 7018 fill/cap. I’m having trouble with the fill passes on the bottom, and tie ins on the bottom. Trying to pass my ua-21 test.

It is for me. I like to run a "hot pass" with Exx10 electrodes, after the root., 10 - 20 amps higher depending on the situation and position / direction of travel.

I’m trying to weave a 7018 cap on 6g and continue to get undercut on the top pipe at around 4 to 8 o’clock keep trying different things but it still happens I’m not a pro by any means just a pipe-fitter practicing is it useless to weave on 6g 6” should I just be running two or three stringers for a cap im good with root and fill but the dang cap is so frustrating

why on the root sometimes you whip it and run just straight? can you whip the whole way and or run it just straight. and why do you run it cold specifically 7018 1/8? and what can you do if you blow a hole while running 3\32 7018 on a test? can just go back over with 6010?
