Hard to believe when I went to welding school in 1973 that we learned how to weld pipe by putting a 6010 root pass in and low hydrogen the rest of the way isn't it unreal that things are still done the same way 50 years later. What if your doctor or dentist did things exactly the same way they did 50 years ago

Was the 6010 a 3/32 rod?? I’m doing a pipe welding course rn and we use 3/32 6010 with a 3/32 gap, 3/32 landing but my instructor likes running it at 55amps. I find that that’s too cold for me so I jumpit up to 65-70 depending on how bad the fitment is. Obviously the bigger the landing the more heat you’re gonna need but I might just try the 1/8th landing and 80 Amps if that’s what he’s using

Get that Rod Between the pipe make the gap. Tac one side. Before you weld the other tac Put the spacer back in and hit the pipe together to close the gap because when you tac one side it begins to change shape And bend so you gotta make sure you get out back in the same gap or else half your pipe gonna be wider so make sure you get that gap closed on the Tac and you good to go

He's using a flicking back/forth technique due to the digging arc of the 6010 cellulose electrode. Some people have a more pronounced back/Firth flick while using cellulose electrodes. When welding a clean joint with no gap and a large land, it's not so much needed, but when running a gap and thin land on pipe, the digging arc of the cellulose electrodes can cause the keyhole to blow out.

Quick question. New to stick welding. Why do you leave a gap between the pipes and not first butt them together and then weld. I'm sure with the weld it should fuse them together well. Maybe I could be wrong. Been welding mig for years. I first try to fix the gap then weld
@BulkChomp

The spec requires reinforcement on the inside of the pipe where you're welding it. The filler material is not going to penetrate to the other side if you don't have a gap there.
