My good friend Andrew Cardin and I were making a 3g and 4g dual shield flux core video, and finished early so we also filmed this video on welding a 6g weld test with 3/32" 6010 root pass and 7018 cover pass.
Its a common test...and it was the very first real welding test that I took....and failed.
A big thanks to Andrew Cardin, Lincoln Electric, and Triangle Engineering (trieng.com) for help in making this video.

“The boilermaker slide” really hits home. I graduated from my local tech school as a pipe welder, and am now currently practicing for the bootcamp training for the boilermakers. This video is a lifesaver! I’ve watched almost all your videos throughout schooling (which helped out tremendously, putting me at the top of my class) and now I have about 3 weeks until I go to training, and hopefully test out and get certified as a union Boilermaker. Thank you fellow welders, we are the 0.1%! 👨‍🏭 🍻

Welding at this level requires talent that is rare. When a person watches someone like this make a pass around a pipe that has a near perfect result, it is truly humbling to those of us that realize we could never reach this skill level.

The ending comments hit home! When I first broke out as a welder I started out with a not so great rig or welding machine and had a family had a job as a welder helper and had finally got the chance I was wanting to for so many years to break out as a welder and damn the nerves of driving 2 hours from home with no cell phone or means of communication with the wife back home and the kiddos as well as all our bills depending on me to come back with good news for the entire family that papa was going to be able to get a better position at work and maybe help get the family a bit of a brighter future damn man it was stressful as shit lol but aye thanks to the man up stairs plenty of practice and enough knowledge in this trade that was over 8 years ago and sometimes just sit there and think about where I was at one point in my life not knowing where I was going but right now today I'm doing what I love and have came so so far in this line of work extremely blessed and anyone else reading this looking to become a welder or become a better welder I'll tell you what I love it and I'm so thankful I pursued this line of work cuz not a day goes by that I don't think it's pretty awesome to say and have the title of being a welder baby! Like the saying goes SHUT UP AND WELD!! UGH! 😁👍✌

A small piece of advice for anyone testing; if you're worried about root opening shrinking up, only feather the tacks that you're starting on, and then directly tying in to, instead of feathering all four right away. It's not uncommon for the a tack on the opposite side of the pipe to break, if both sides are feathered.

Great job on this video! I'm positive you helped some people struggling to pass their test. It would've helped me when I took mine. You do a wonderful job at explaining the different techniques and positioning needed to perform. I also like that you used a smaller diameter pipe size to test on. Is there a 6" video coming in the future? I hope so. Thanks for putting this out for the world!

started as a pipe welder helper on pipelines in the early 70s after a few years i was welding pipe. 3/32 6010 root.. heat was adjusted much lower as to not destroy the face (landing). or way have a face at all.. no whipping, a slight push and drag. dam near can be done without a shield. grind. then the (hot pass)would penetrate the root and pipe blending all together. xray quality

Thanks for the tips Jody! First test I took was schedule 80, 4" tube using 1/8" 309 filler (test for that company qualified me for both carbon and stainless). It was also the first time I welded with a purge. I passed it first shot, fresh out of school, but that was the last time I welded carbon for that company. Until the lay off, all I welded was 308, 317, and Hastelloy. Well, I forgot, we did do a few tanks that had Chromoly tubes.

Hey Jody, the what not to do was really helpful. that picture of the grind marks outside of the area that needed to be welded was really helpful. I know there's probably alot of people reading this comment thinking "well what did you expect" but I bet you those people learned the hard way too. Also sometimes as a beginner you don't know what trouble you can get into before you make little mistakes like that. Of course you learn upon mistakes but if I would of known what to avoid in the testing area that would of saved me lots of headaches and disappointment.

Has anyone noticed if you are a welder to a good standard, you are usually good at any other hand eye co-ordination skills, I tried plastering a wall and it turned out good, I tried paint spraying a car and that worked a treat, but the theory ends when I try to hit a golf ball, so I guess that theory just went out the window !! I don't up hill pipe, I'm a pipeline welder. We use 6010 5p+ root passes down hill and as for me, especially on a test (6g or 5g) we take a gap toghter than that. the rod should just lay in between the bevels and the key hole close up behind you. If i were to take it that wide, and have to step the bead in, it would eather cause internal undercut or internal concavity causing failure of the test or if in the field possibly a bad xray.

I hate grinding out my steam pipe weld because the X-Ray person sees small spots of slag. I have been told that whipping the rod traps slag. So I use a 3/32 gap and 1/8 6010+ Rod. Once I am moving up the key hole there is no problem keeping the rod burning inside the pipe with no whip. In addition, I grind my tacks very thin and burn through them before I stop. On the lighter side, my eyes are so bad I need to use a 3.00 Meg. Cheater in my hood and 3.00 drug store reading glasses to TIG weld LOL. I am 65… One my year and I’m hanging it up ;-)

I went to welding school in 1973 and we learned to weld pipe with a 6010 root pass and a 7018 the rest of the way 50 years ago and is still being done the same way isn't that crazy imagine if your doctor or Dentist was doing the same procedure 50 years ago as he's doing today lol.

Wish we had KZfaq when I was younger, I needed to get a 3G Cert for a project we were doing, never heard of or knew anything about it, I’m by no means a professional welder so I asked the instructor about the levels with 6G being required for pipe welding so since it only cost me $35 I went for it, he told me I’d only get 3/16 in 4 forward and 4 backward bends and the first piece showed just a hair under 3/16, he looked up at me and said it didn’t look good...the last 7 pieces were perfect. I guess I’m just lucky.

that was a great tip brother. I had never thought about starting up ahead if the keyhole gets too big, then coming back and fixing it later. Great tip. Alot of screwups would have been way easier for me if I had done just this.

A trick I learned when takin a weld test at the test lab is to stick a file in the top open end of the coupon to prop my off hand arm on . Or use a crescent wrench and close it on the open end tight to prop on . Helps keep me steady and not burn your arm on the hot pipe .

I took this test a few years ago. It had to be xrayed. I passed on my 3rd attempt. It was a UA test for the pipefitters. They were extremely critical. The first two were good, but they wouldn’t sent it to shoot it because of a tiny bit of undercut on the cap. Fortunately I passed 3rd attempt

Wonderful video! Up here in Northern Ontario Canada we would do the same pipe test with 2" schedule 40 pipe. Same bevel, same landing using 6011 1/8" and 7018 1/8". To old to do that now.

Tu nos as puesto una trozo de tuberia apax 2 inch. Perfecto sobe todo la colo cacion de electrodo para llevar minima penetrcion. te felicito por este aporte que ofreces. Gracias

I lprefer a big gap and about a 1/16 landing use 1/8 5p but i drag it for the stringer, clean the stringer pass turn it up a lil bit run a hot pass with 5p again , clean it then cap it with lohi 7018 either 3/32 or 1/8 doesnt matter looks like i rolled it when im done Have done about 1000 xray welds and have busted about 5 of em and mostly cause i was lazy and thought it was close but good enough. This is a good video. Good welder

Good video Jody. I'll never do a 6g test or any other either. Total amateur here but your videos have helped me immensely. Question. Why is your welding rod bent in a curly-cue fashion? I've seen welder that wanted a shorter rod just cut them shorter. If it's to rotate the stinger then why not a 90 degree bend instead of 270?
@Inkvine9
@Inkvine9 7 жыл бұрын
Another tip for the root pass if the keyhole gets out of control on ya. If the keyhole is getting too small, temporarily change the rod angle to leading angle so the arc force will open up the keyhole. If it is getting too big, increase the distance of the forward movement (within reason) or temporarily change rod angle to a drag angle until it's under control then return to a 90 degree rod angle. Don't be afraid to bump down the amperage if it is too out of control, but you have to always remember if you lower the juice too far in attempts to control the key hole size, you will loss arc density / arc stiffness, and the soft arc will not follow the movements you make with the rod very responsively - the arc may want to favor one side of the joint or the other.
