I've got the same car, same issues, around the same mileage. Only problem is, rather than be my backup project, it's my first car and my lifeline. Murphy's Law is strong with the Eclipse GTS, that's for sure. To boot it's a bit too rare to have enough guides and how-to videos. Your videos are a life saver.

I just bought an '03 GTS last weekend. Your video series has really taught me a lot about these 6G72. I'm a lot more confident about future work I might need to do after watching you go through it.

I recently acquired one of these cars, timing belt was replaced 300 miles ago and there is a belt flapping noise from this area, I wasn't aware of the pretension requirement for this motor. Thank you. I'll have to make sure to do so when I get into double checking or redoing the shops work, out of labor warranty, unfortunately...

I would highly advise not driving it until you check. Mine didn't even make a slapping noise, yet still slipped multiple times before I discovered this tensioner. Also, I had the same car in your thumbnail... there is one single video of it on this channel- all the rest are on my other channel.

@92kbuilds-mn2lk Oh yeah, she's parked. I'll just drive one of my other cars until I can get in and assess. Worst case is that is not the issue and Ive got much furth diag. to find any other issues. she only has 78k miles on it she was a garage princess barely driven 1k miles a year.

Wow, that's almost an impossible find. Almost all of them were ran into the ground, including mine. I don't even see nice ones for sale anymore, they are always trashed.

Torques: Crankshaft bolt: 180-190Nm Tensioner pulley: 42-55Nm Timing idler pulley: 50-60Nm Hydraulic tensioner pin should protrude 3.8-4.5 mm. Cam locking tool and tensioner pulley wrench make this job easier. And double check your work by rotating crank by hand you should perfectly land the timing marks every two revolutions.

Man, JDM cars are more complicated than I thought they’d be 😮. So many moving part but you’re pretty knowledgeable on just about every car you’ve worked on/ owned.

I do a lot of research- if I don't know the answer, I find it. Sometimes that takes days of googling and reading and video watching, just to find someone who showed or discussed that one thing for 10 seconds that the other 99 people didn't. It's even more difficult to find when 99% of people don't know either, and it's even further exacerbated when it's an old vehicle like this before people discussed them extensively online. There's only a handful of timing belt videos for this car- hundreds if not thousands on a newer Honda V6. And none of the videos showed this that I'm aware of- they didn't know. I found one single comment after many hours on a thread from over a decade ago, that finally mentioned this dual tensioner...

Thank you for this video 92KBuilds very helpful .... i dont even see other examples of this belt replace job on u tube....... There are likely many 3.0s scraped because there is a lack of good repair videos like this one. EVERYONE REMEMBER------ DONT TURN CAM SPROCKETS OR THE CRANK IF TIMING BELT IS NOT FULLY INSTALLED CORRECTLY. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Only potential problem with that is they have been using the 6g72 engine code since the 80's, and there have been many different versions and variants along the way with different components and torque specs and such and different internals as well like SOHC vs DOHC. They have also been mounted in a ton of different orientations- same way in the Galant I think as in the Eclipse, but backwards in the 3000GT & Stealth, and longitudinally mounted in the SUV's. The different mounting position puts some of the accessories in different spots, and I think different years and applications even had different firing orders and distributors. They may have added tensioners, moved tensioners, and removed tensioners. Many other parts along the way changed as well I'm sure. Easy to get confused and mix things up if you don't know what you're doing. So great tip, but you have to be careful unless the manual shows and clearly states the differences along the way for all models.

Very good question, I never thought of that. Not having the tension set correctly/having a loose belt slapping around in there would certainly overwork the hydraulic tensioner...

How do you torque your crank pulley bolt? Or do you just zip it down with a impact gun like most people?

Yeah I tried to reply to you last night on the other video but it looked like you deleted your comment. I think they may have discontinued the impact that I'm using because I can't find it now either. I put up a link of a Dewalt on both videos that has the same amount of power that I would now recommend since mine is no longer available. Problem with the cheaper ones is they are not as powerful (mine was over $300 5 years ago).

No not really, just posted the short pull of it but I see you watched that. Everything is holding up and I have been daily driving it. I'm trying to get a video of the Challenger up before I post the Eclipse again. I'll have a longer pull video of the Eclipse comming up and a video about the new tires. Not sure what's next for it. Maybe a cold air intake but I know I need to replace the shocks and struts too. I'm just very budget limited at the moment. Thanks for checking in.

So a few questions if you don't mind me asking. If my belt is loose how would I know if it hasn't already skipped a tooth and the markings I put down are correct BEFORE I take it off? How can I know the teeth count assuming it isn't marked? Second, that's a long list of things to take off. Could I have a list of what you took out to get to the belt like you just did on the video? Third, I see that you've got the engine on jack support. What's the right way to do that, and is there a way to screw it up that I should avoid (You mentioned crushing the oil pan)?
@92kbuilds-mn2lk
@92kbuilds-mn2lk 9 ай бұрын
You need to watch the timing belt video from beginning to end without skipping- pretty much everything you just asked me is covered in the video. The way you know whether or not it skipped is by lining up all 3 timing marks and checking, which was covered in the video. As far as a list of everything to take off, I couldn't possibly remember everything now months later. There are a few more things to remove if you are replacing the belt compared to just replacing the tensioner, but again everything is covered in the video. As for lifting the engine, just use a wooden board between the jack and the oil pan. If you let it drop too far, it can bust off tiny plastic couplers on the side. If you raise it too far, it gets caught again (on what I'm not sure), and this is where you would run into crushing the oil pan if you try to force it once you reach this point. Again, this is all covered in the video...

Nope. All 3 times I did it without a lock. Use clamps to hold it onto the cam gears if necessary until you get it around the bottom drive gear and get the tensioner installed.
