I have a Varmint 26" .308 in an MDT XRS chassis and an APW Warbird braked suppressor - 1200 ish rounds through it and it shoots absolutely amazingly. Factory ammo is usually about 1-1.25" groups, but handloads have been super easy to get just right. Nosler 165gr AccuBonds on Vihtavuori N140 on all the powder charges I tested group under .45" at 100m, eventually ended up with a .165" 3 shot group and .44" 9 shot group... Now I'm using 178gr ELD-X, consistently .75", but it's absolutely hauling ass at almost 2800fps and little to no pressure signs... I'm loving it lol. I'm looking to get a 6 Creed and 7 or .300 PRC, both Howas.

I’ve got a Howa that in that old caliber no one invites anymore, 308. When it isn’t in the corner pouting thinking about how in high school it could throw a 168 a 1/4 mile, it shoots between 3/4 and 1 moa out to 600

I have a Varmint 26" .308, MDT XRS Chassis, Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25 and an APW Warbird braked suppressor... Factory ammo is nothing to brag about, usually 1-1.25 MOA at 100m, however with reloaded ammo I've gotten exceptional results - down to a .165 3 shot group and that load consistently ran .45" at 100m, now firing 178gr ELD-X at 2776fps and crushing Gemsbok, Kudu and Eland out past 600m with it. I'm going to get another 2 Howas, 6mm Creed and 7 or .300 PRC for PRS and ELR as well as some hunting occasionally.

I built a couple rifles years back with howa barreled actions and they were amazing guns. One was a 204 ruger that was stainless heavy barrel and it was killer. It would drive nails all day long and was worth every penny spent. Thinking about buying and building a couple more cause you just can't go wrong with howa.

I've got an older 1500 243 with a vortex z Brite scope. This gun doesn't care one bit if it's Remington core lok or a winchester power points in 100 gr. as it will poke all three into a single jagged hole at 100 yards. I've only found 2 guns that can do this with factory ammunition and the other is a Ruger American in 308 winchester. This gun has the exact same scope and it absolutely loves the 180 grain winchester power points. It proves that the newer guns have tighter chambers and better barrels than the older ones. I have learned that when I'm shooting with a bipod, to c clamp a 1x4 to the front of the table and load the legs against the 1x4 for optimum accuracy. I always do this, and when I'm hunting, I will always load the bipod in little holes in the dirt made with my knife. This is what I have learned from the scout sniper platoon in San Diego back in the day. I always let them barrels cool off for 15 minutes between shots because the barrels will retract from the previous shot heating up these slimmer barrels. The m- 40 a 5s that we trained with are custom built rifles for precision shooting and these rifles are extremely accurate and expensive. The scopes are the 8541 Schmidt and Benders, and these are top of the line 3x12 x56 mil rad scopes that you can see into the promise land with. It's good to know that the newer rifles have been very successful in gaining great strides of producing quality products for use in the hunting rifles at a fraction of the price of a custom built rifle costs. Thanks for the Video! You’d be surprised at how a bag out front can tighten up groups! Bipods are good on grass, dirt, etc. I know a bag doesn’t look all tactical and stuff but a bipod on a wood bench isn’t your most average real world scenario anyway.

I’ve had mag problems with my Howa mini Grendel also. Had a barreled action pillar bedded in a Boyd’s One stock with a Dip Inc trigger guard and box plate. There’s a little play and it doesn’t lock up real tight leading me to have to press up on the mag so they’ll feed. I have it at my gunsmith for adjustment. I’ll only use my mag to hunt with since I load my own long range rounds by hand and their long than factory ammo. Other than that, I can shoot 1/2” groups with Nosler RDF 130’s with Lapua brass and Alliant power pro varmint.

Interesting what you say about the 124gr; I always shot 115gr, but the ammo I was shooting at the time was out of stock, so I decided to try their 124gr since it was in stock. In really enjoyed the 124gr, seemed to be more accurate with it. I decided to try the 147gr of the same ammo; I'm glad I only bought to boxes of it to test, I realized that 124gr, for me, seemed to be my sweet spot. The brand ammo I am shooting now, I continue to shoot the 124 and love it. I am not a reloader, I am a fan of factory fresh ammo. I was looking into it just for the cost savings, but realized that was the wrong reason to get into reloading.

@@Timothy-NH I started reloading to save money and found I saved some but the real advantage was I could tune my loads to my particular gun. Also, at my range the wind tends to swirl so heavier bullets don't get blown around as much on windy days.

My Remington 700 SPS AAC Tactical in 308 shoots half MOA with my handloads and an SWFA scope mounted with $20 rings. Everything is stock. I never did any break-in procedures. I just use isopropyl alcohol on a Bore Snake to clean it when needed. I use a $40 Caldwell swivel bipod with a $10 bubble level. I use a dress sock stuffed with airsoft BB's for the rear bag. I don't feel the need for a $5000 gun setup but would sure like one.

just got an AB Arms with a Howa 308...the barrel break in procedure was tedious (but I did follow Howa's recommendations) but so far have only shot cheap .308 ammo (Fiocchi 150 gr). The groups were not impressive (me or the barrel?) but I have some match ammo and will test again as I only have 60 rounds through the gun (including the barrel conditioning). Have high hopes for this gun.

I took my howa 20inch heavy 308 in a crappy hogue stock and "broke in" my barrel half assed with only a bore snake. Didn't even do it properly. Used federal 150gr hunting soft point and hit sub MOA all day long out 200 yards. It liked 165 and 150 hornady white tail as well. Next time I'm out I'll toss some Match Kings through it just for shits, but I'm sure it will do fine as long as I do my part.

The proving ground videos are getting better each time. One recommendation I would make is to be more consistent with your targets. I understand not wanting to look rehearsed, but having defined divisions between ammo and shooter would make it easier to follow. Also, if in post production editing you could add the range buddy results it would be cool, but not required. Love the channel, keep up the good work!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's dead in the water. It's trying to ride the coattails of the 6.5, but #1 it doesn't have all the gun rags ranting and raving about its magical ballistic properties, and #2 it lacks the versatility of the 6.5 for medium game hunting. It's probably a fantastic round, but it's too specialized and doesn't do anything a .243 Winchester doesn't already do and it already has decades of aftermarket support.

Curious - what barrel break-in did you perform, if any? If you did, how many rounds since then? You mentioned barrel heating up at one point. Would it have helped to have a longer cool-down between each shot? The groups seemed to expand as the barrel warmed, but it was impossible to tell since it was not in real time for most of it (speeding up the real time was good, tho). Was there any cleaning during the firing day, and if not, do you think it would have made a difference?

Try dry firing on your bipod /bag set up and see how much movement of the crosshairs you're getting. I'm tipping you are getting heaps judging by the consistency of the groups. I dry fire on my bags until the movement ceases before I fire a shot. All my heavy barrel Howa's (7 of) shoot .75-.8 moa without any type of load development. With basic load development they all shoot .5 moa.

It would be nice if you used a chronoghraph , that way we could see velosity, es and sd. That may tell you if a bad group is the gun or the ammo.

These aren't custom high end hand lapped barrels... Mass production barrels need to be "seasoned" first with copper fouling to tighten up the bore before you'll really see what the barrel is capable of. Usually that takes shooting at LEAST 40-100 rounds down the bore without cleaning before a barrel starts shooting it's best. I'd put a minimum of 2 boxes of ammo down a new barrel before trying to compare groups to be fair to the rifle and see what its true accuracy potential is. I know, that costs more money. You'll notice the groups get better as the rifle gets more copper fouling... Use the cheapest ammo you can find first to season the barrel!

Damnit. I seriously didn't want to hear you say it was a test action. I want an off the shelf gun that I would end up with were I to buy one. And I guess I would assume there is always a possibility these t&e guns might get a little more attention than the others

I honestly think some of your weird issues are not the ammo. That Harris bipod needs to go, the one I have creates similar weird issues with groups. That rifle seems like it is fine. I literally saw three bullets with 87 grain bullets go in the same hole then magically two shots go high but into the same hole. To me that’s not the ammo that’s either the shooter(unlikely from your video)or a unknown support equipment issue. The Harris issues are well documented as well. Tons of constant options for bipods. The mag issue I expected most of the budget guns have issues with mags until the shooter figures it out. Most times shooters don’t figure that out till it starts failing at a match. Fortunately lots of experience at those matches gets them on the right track to figuring it out. Definitely a possible option for a budget match rifle!

I have a Harris on my 300 win mag, 6.5 creedmoor and 338 Lapua and I don't have any issues. It may be a bit light for my Lapua because it weighs 18 lbs. The bench may have something to do with it causing strange harmonics. Get sandbags or get on the ground prone and it may solve some issues.
@roady7420
@roady7420 5 жыл бұрын
I will only say the springs on the Harris is where the inconsistency is in my particular case. It’s often over looked with Harris but its definitely a real thing with the design. I agree there could be other support issues as well. Clearly they have access to concrete benches don’t really understand them using the wood.

roady7420 they just need a sand bag! It’s that easy. A wooden bench with a bipod is asking for harmonic issues.

I think you should go back a watch it again you can actually see them flinch on several of the shots that are flyers & the fact that they blame themselves is also telling . As a shooter you know when you flinch or change how your addressing the rifle . If it were the bipod it would have happened at different intervals and the fact that each of them seemed to get through 3rds then have a change on point of impact says to me it's more likely heat in the barrel as the last 2rds are maintaining the same POI . Or they're getting nervous & missing the 4rd then trying to keep the 5th with it so it doesn't look like a flyer .

Kyle Kyle If you intended to imply that a factory built 243 Win is the same as a 6mm Creedmoor then you are overlooking the importance of twist rate in factory barrels. Commercial offerings of 243 Win generally have 1:10 twist rates favoring lighter projectiles where a 6mm Creedmoor generally has a 1:8 twist to favor higher BC projectiles more suitable for longer ranges.

Conan Mills That is true. I wasn’t going to mention the minor cartridge differences because it’s hard to qualify or quantify the effect without more in depth data. Twist rate is pretty understood. And the industry standard for 243 is a slower twist rate, which severely limits off the shelf options for long range.
@txdocprich_8404
@txdocprich_8404 5 жыл бұрын
Wasn’t implying anything, not sure why you people are commenting here. I know the differences in cartridges, twist rate on barrels, so on and so on. I’ve been an avid shooter since I was 4. Competed in competitions from 8-17yrs old. Spent 4 years in the military applying my skills to frontal lobes. My 243 has a special made barrel, and I built it off of the Win 70, 1-8 twist. It tends to favor 107 ELD or SMK. I try to stay away from 2,900fps or more as it will severely shorten the life of the barrel, so I’m rocking around in the 2,650-2,700 zone depending on my load. Even then, I don’t shoot a ton of rounds through it. I always take a 22LR with me and shoot it when I’m not engaged on the 243. Typical application for the 243 is 500-800 yards. Farthest I’ve shot was 1,473. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I think most rifles shoot better with heavier bullets. However I think it has more to do with the length of the bullets. Heavy bullets are generally longer, better rifling engagement.
