This is one of the most underrated super sport motorcycles developed by Kawasaki!
They called it... the ZX9R
In response to Honda's introduction of the CBR900RR Fireblade in 1992, the team in green sort to pioneer a malicious machine by combining their class-leading big-bore ZZR1100 and middle weight sports bike ZXR750 into one. The end result... was a big ass motorcycle.
PUMPING OUT 15 more ponies than that of the fireblade, the ZX9R had the advantage in power deliver, but could not make up for its absolute giant size and reduced agility.
Rather than be a direct competitor, the ZX-9R was retained as a more stable and more comfortable alternative to the Honda, with more straight-line speed.
YOU'RE LOOKING AT THE FIRST STOCK PRODUCTION MOTORCYCLE TO HIT THE 9 SECOND 1/4 mile...

@010steveo Funny you should mention that. I came off an '83 Honda VT 250 FII which I rode for around 3 years then went straight to a 94 B1 ZX9R. Rode the Kawaski for 12 years ! I had adapted to the 9R pretty quickly as I have had some previous experiences on my brothers 88 and 91 GSX-R 750s.. Those were the best days !!!

I had an 01 as well, candy apple green. I got it in 2012 bone stock. 3 months later she had Full Yoshi exhaust and had it dyno jetted which woke it up to 163rwhp. My ridding group nicknamed R1 eater. Summer of 2018 I ate it doin +/- 120mph in a wheelie and it tumbled so you could guess she was done. Been trying to find an identical bike ever since. ((( I've also had cbr1000rr, gsxr750, and currently a 2013 zx10,,, my 2001 zx9r was the best overall bike I've ever ridden)))

I had one almost new in 2002 it was the newer one not a 2000 model but my god was it fast! I was clocked at 201.5 mph at a half mile event! Now obviously this wasn’t stock it had been turned way up and had gearing changes we went up instead of down to try and achieve a higher top speed! But like you said we raced R1’s, CBR1000RR’s, GSXR’s 1000’s and who ever got the jump usually won I can’t remember anyone ever running me down per say! Mine looked just like the green one in the Video but had a full Muzzy stainless exhaust, pc, kn air filter, +1 on front and -2 on back plus it was switched to an aluminum light weight one with carbon fiber wheels which made a huge difference! Everything that didn’t make it go faster was stripped the mirrors removed, rear fender, back seat, lower morw stream line windshield! Man she was slick everything was all polished I miss the shiny polished bikes! Now everything is black even the wheels!

Yes. Exactly. No jerky fuel injection. Perfectly smooth with the carbs sorted. Get the geometry right and she’s a right good one! The headlight actually works too. Imagine that in today’s modern bike terms! The electronics on newer bikes I have zero use for. Ride a bike with the right amount of power that you can manage effectively, and then you don’t need traction control. Enter ZX9R. Don’t forget to spring her right front and rear. Preferably add a penske shock with proper spring for your weight. 80/100w headlight bulbs improved already good lighting. fwiw

If you take real good care of it, you will never need another bike. My 2003 9r has 102k and it still runs strong, and makes me giddy when I get some clear open road to hit the throttle. All the modern bikes have these crazy amounts of HP but I literally can’t even use the top third of what the 9r has unless you take it to a track. It’s so well balanced and manoeuvrable it’s just a joy ride.

It’s pretty comical riding with riders on these late model “E” bikes. They’ve got every imaginable advantage, even more power and less weight, traction control too! And yet, they can’t keep up! And they’re always fiddling with their “settings”, searching for that holy grail that must be in those settings somewhere right? Hilarious really.
@xGxPhantomZzz
@xGxPhantomZzz 2 жыл бұрын
@@georgebland9931 Yea the Problem with modern superbikes is just too much power, early 2000 Bikes still have somewhat usable power, but like 200+hp? No wonder they have traction and wheelie control, otherwise you would go flying in every corner if you aren't Valentino Rossi
@georgebland9931
@georgebland9931 Жыл бұрын
@@xGxPhantomZzz I really don’t get the attraction to these newer bikes. They’re entirely impractical. It’s really all about form over function. They’re state of the art looking bikes. And I guess if you’re wanting to be cool, that you have to be on one of them? I’ve been observing riders for years now, as they fiddle with settings constantly and trying to get it to work just right. Yet, it’s just never just right like ever! They absolutely can’t use the machines in full “no rider aids” mode. I see good riders made slower by these bikes. It makes me wonder. Same with the new cars with all the electronics and auto features. They’re really aggravating to drive. Well, live and let live I guess. It’s not my money they’re spending on these bikes. It’s always interesting to watch their reactions when a very good rider on something like a ZX9R (noted.. shall we(?) as a TURD in all performance aspects from weight to power output and handling) just makes them look stupid on their state of the art xyz.

I have tucked away my 2001 E2 ZX9R, fire cracker red with only 4000 kays on the clock. I purchased it from the original owner. Have all the books and original purchase papers. It's had one official service and the following have been done off the book to keep it mantained with fresh fluids. It is literally still a brand new bike and I absolutely love it. I will never sell it. The metal bits are also like new. No tarnishing. It's absolutely 100% original, never dropped and doesn't even have a single stone chip anywhere, especially the lower front cowl section that's known for getting smashed. I purchased a brand new Akrapovic titanium exhaust system with a carbon fibre muffler, oval. Still in the packaging. I'll fit it someday... I love these old school bikes. Should be a nice collector bike someday. I had a B1 back in 95 and owned that for 12 years before selling that. I wish I'd kept it. Thanks for the video. Nice to see this bike being appreciated.

What they never understood was that this machine was the real world best in its class. Combined with a fantastic engine, an induction roar that marks Kawasaki's out from the rest, greats looks and great reliability. A superbike for those who dont need electronics keeping them safe and who dont need the latest gimmics. ZX9R riders are the ones sat in the corner with a knowing smile on their face. my favourite bike. A friend who always prided himself for never making a mistake was fitting an alarm to one of these 9r's for someone he knew well. Meticulously he integrated the system into the machines wiring over an hour, filled the warranty forms, handed them over then went to start it. He had ten years experience, and never messed up which we were reminded on a regular basis. Needless to say embarrassingly it only worked on three cylinders. As support the workshop gave guidance through the medium of pointing and laughing, as did sales, and the fit bit he was after on reception. It strange how word spread (it was me) and the icing on the cake......he mis-soldered the wiring loom to the bike he bought as a treat to himself. My best sacking ever, and just in time for a 9 hour flight to America.

I have a mint 2000 with a number of extras, it is a very solid bike and once you do a few mods you can get a final weight just under 400lbs. Change out the factory clip ons for a set of Apex 3" adjustable risers and add a Corbin seat and it is full send with a aftermarket shock, jet kit, ignition advancer and slip on and wow, its fast. People do not realize how good these are and one in top shape will hang with anything today because it is all about the rider!

I've had 4 of these so far ( C1, C2, E1 & F1) and they are without doubt the most underrated machines. That carb roar and fizzing snarl on the over run is addictive. Pulling the pin on these is demon grin inducing! Love em and am looking for a low miles F2P now. Great vid on a fabulous bike 😁

@@stanza77 i have test ridden a couple of the Zx10's..... Great bikes but, for me, they are too track focused and frankly all the nanny gizmos are seriously off-putting. If you need traction control and a bunch of other " rider aids" then you are, imo, no longer fully in control ( i admit i am no fan of all these safety electronics.... )

@@sjd7810 Gotcha, just after this they made the 03-04 ZX10r called. The Widowmaker because it had no nannies. But as you say because of MotoGP and stuff ir was very track focused. Older sport bikes like this and the Yamaha Thunder Ace could be toured in. Less aggressive.

Heard that 2000 and 2001 has a stronger midrange power then F 2003? I look for F model as it looks better and have with all the uppgrades but stronger motor speaks alot Is it much diffrence in riding this old versus new? Thanks
@sjd7810
@sjd7810 Жыл бұрын
@@69VAJRA to be honest, unless you do a lot of track days ( or push the front hard ) you wont notice much difference. The F has a stronger front end with better feedback so you can corner in haste with confidence. Like all Zx9's they do not like crawling through traffic and the mid range roll on can be a bit slow ( its a sport bike so thats what shifting is for lol) Having said that, the F is by far, IMO, the best of the bunch in terms of motor, suspension and looks but as i said the E is not hugely different and you will have immense fun on either ... Good luck finding what you like 😬👍

I have a 98 C1 model with 60K miles and it still pulls like a train. Except for failing voltage regulators I have not had any issues. I picked up another, 2000 D1 model recently to use as a track bike. I absolutely love these as I can ride all day without feeling beat up. Great video, glad to see someone giving them the love they deserve.

I never rode the zx9r, but it sounds alot like my 01 gsxr 750. Once in a while ill jump off my ducati and get on the 750 and it feels like a really comfortable, planted bike in comparison. Thanks for the great review of a sweet bike.

Completely different bikes. The GSXR750 needs revs to make its power, and midrange feels anemic. ZX9R has good midrange power, and much easier to live with on the street.

Back in 1998, I traded in my 96 ZX11 for new "all new" 1998 ZX-9. It was a completely different bike from the last year model. It had tons of power and would wheelie like crazy. It felt so light compared to the ZX-11. I really enjoyed it until I traded it for the new 2000 ZX-12R. Those were some great times!

I had a 2001 ZX 9 a few years ago with 63.000km on it,but boy, that thing was a blast of a ride. But unfortunately I had a '96 fireblade before that,and I find the ZX a little heavier on the cornering side compared to how it was with the blade, so I traded it and return to Honda. But speaking of the power delivery and feel, that bike was a top dog. Very good bike. ❤️ From Roumania!✌️✌️

If you raise the rear, or lower the front, she’ll turn and feel a LOT lighter. The ZX7R’s were known to have one of the best front ends ever. I wish that I’d known how to set up a bike properly back when I owned mine. It also (mine) pulled like a freight train, and had the most salivatory roar with the throttle on the stop, which, was basically where I rode the thing most of the time. Set into a corner, it was like pushing against a wall, it was so solid, stable and confidence inspiring… just rock solid. Mine could have benefited from a good jet kit and an aftermarket shock. Very uncomfortable and very physically demanding bike to ride aggressively. At the tender age of 22 years, fit as a fiddle, I’d get off that thing after a day of riding, and I’d be in pain! But it was worth it. Great headlight for fast night riding. High beams would light up most curves. I really miss mine.

I own a 2002 E1 model. After some TLC she runs like a dream. Absolutely lively machine that feels happiest when on the boil. My only issue; I keep whacking my kernarckers on that wide tank coz I like to sit close up front. That can mess with your brake mark at times. But all is forgiven and i love it.

I had a 2001 in the stable until last summer. What an excellent bike for sport touring! Day after day of 550-650km rides at lock-you-up speeds. The thing really came to life above 6500RPM and once I figured out the suspension for my riding style, I've never felt more "on rails through the corners" on any other bike. I went back and looked at model shootout articles for that year and the journos always said it wasn't evolving as fast as the other bikes but then when you looked at the lap times it was very often first or second against the field.

I had a 99 ZX-6R, physically similar dimensions, It was a divorce present to myself. My GF can vouch for the all day pillion comfort, a 10 day tour in France, no problems. 2 solo tours of the Pyrenees mountains, easily kept up with Litre bikes over the high passes, long straights, not so much. Mates on a R1 & ZX-9R really had the "legs" no question.

I owned a 99 model zx9r and it was loads of fun, one of my mates now owns it and he loves it. I now own a 2004 zx10r widowmaker and it's so much smoother throttle and way quicker in saying that the 900 seems to give me more adrenalin rush. I like riding it when I see my mate. I like the colour scheme on your zx9r, my old zx9r was blue. My zx10r is green. Both great bikes. Ride safe dudes and have fun.

Had a 98 model from new, a lot faster than a blade and only a tiny bit slower than an R1, until it rained, then nothing could keep up with it. Such a perfectly balanced and predictably handling bike. It could only be beaten on a smooth race track, on the road it was untouchable. I think back in the day a standard super stock version came something like 1st in class and 6th overall in the Bol d’Or endurance race ridden by the French police team and beat most factory teams. Absolutely awesome. Will never forget that bike. Had a 2000 ZX6r after that which was every bit as good as the 9R but even better handling and only slower from A to B on a long straight. Cannot sing the praises of these two bikes enough

Have my own green-black 2002 (F1P model) bein' rebuilt. It is almost finishing and I am waiting to ride it. You got the real essence in the video. The bike is all about comfort, great controls angle, big wind screen, very comfy for passengers, rather edgy and sporty character, lots of torque and lots of power for a 899cc. I have the original ad brochure that states 152hp!!! with Ram Air. And believe me, it is there and it works. It has the same rwhp power as the yamaha r1 of those years. The present Z1000SX has about the same numbers, both in engine and geometry.
