Never mind all this,prevent rust from the beginning. My father purchased a new Land rover for the farm in 1967, the first week of purchase he sprayed the under body/chassis with engine oil and also inside the box sections ,he repeated this exercise every autumn after power washing .We still own that vehicle,it is it still in excellent rust free Condition chassis wise, having had only one outrigger replaced from accident damage not rust. Regards.

Another rust preventative tip to pass on is for the 85-88 SR5 trucks that have the black/metal trim that clips on over the drip rails. You need to take those off periodically and clean under them as they can gather dirt/mud, especially if you wheel your truck. That mud holds moisture against the sheetmetal and will eventually rust out your A pillars. I found that out the hard way, I have two nickel sized rust through spots (one on each A pillar) on my otherwise 100% rust free (even the bed), original paint 87 Toyota 4x4.

On my cars here in Finland, where we live with the salt scourge, I use Dinitrol ML which is an oil based penetrating rust protection, spray it on the underside and inside cavities. Then I follow it up after it has had a few days to cure with thick bitumen based underbody sealer. That's worked very well for me.

Great video. Believe it or not, had 1994 extended cab, identical to yours. Same color, with suspension lift, body lift, n bed liner, mint shape in n out. (I built for show n go ) Eventually sold to my sister, n bought a tundra. (Needed more space / room ) I do alot of camping, jet skiing, n now pull n enclosed trailer, with my maverick x3, in it, along with camping gear. Anyway, good luck with ur build, looking amazing. Thanks for the tip on rust prevention. 😉 I have usually just resprayed frame, 2 to 3 times a year. Am in N.J. / N.Y. area.

Thanks for this video. I have a 92 ex-cab v6 4x4 and I'm having to pull out the windshield this week due to rust from the original trim. Mine is a chromed metal trim which has / had a fine rubber seal around it which dries out, cracks, and lets A LOT of moisture accumulate and stay behind it. I started seeing a little rust bubbles a few years ago and neglected to fix them immediately. Now I have a serious welding project to replace a lot of the metal, mainly at the base on the two sides. When I removed the trim and started scraping paint it was a whole lot worse than I ever imagined, including some holes. After some forum hunting I found that a lot of other people have had the same issues with the 89-95's. Im going to get it all back to bare metal and use POR-15. For the new glass I'm also not going to use a rubber seal molding like some have for the windshield, I will glue it in back in, then just use a non UV type of sealant in the remaining "U" channel around it. No more trim for me. After this I'll be sanding the entire truck down and plan to spray on Raptor Liner.
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Mine started to do this in the lower passenger corner of the windshield, behind the trim. Lucky I caught it early enough to where the metal was pitting but had no holes.

@@VinylToVideo Different strokes for different folks. These trucks have a huge cult following which went mainstream after Top Gear's "Kill a Toyota" episode (The Toyota wouldn't die - try it in a Chevy/Ford.) Spray with a pump up sprayer mixed with roughly 50/50 canola oil and water . Treat 2 to 4 times a year That's what i've done in Michigan for years. I had an 03 that looked brand new and I have a 13 that looks brand new. Original frame paint after 14 years in Michigan on a Toyota truck is unheard of. I don't even wash them during the winter. Rinse maybe... my seasoned cast-iron pan gave me the idea :(

One of my colleagues put an electronic rust inhibitor on his 3rd gen. 4Runner and claims that he hasn't had any rust issues for over 5 years. I'm not completely sold on it since it costs a little over $200, but just wondering if you heard of it. Somehow it doesn't interfere with the vehicles electrical system and uses anodes that rust out instead of the truck...I guess? Like you, I have to keep up on the rust prevention cause I live in Missouri, but my '87 4Runner has it worse since it has no choice to sit outside in the elements year round. Love your truck by the way

I an original owner of 1986 Toyota pickup mfg. and assembled in Japan. vin. JT4RN50RXG0198942 99,500miles.. cost $5850 4 on the floor. Carb. rwd. two clips on tailgate, I remove the cat. and the damned little mini truck runs and handles more like a 1955 MG Midget than a pickup. It shifts into third at 56mph comfortably. The engine really started to be FAST around 60,000 miles(break in?) Lays wheels all thru first, all thru second and 'chirps' banging into third(at which point the V-8's catch it and pass it..really) Never had any engine work what so ever. Trans did not like going into Reverse around 88,000 and had that repaired, but nothing else all else is stock, except battery, plugs, and tires and calipers and brake pads and filters. Never replace antifrezze it is from factory 1986. All else is stock. Runs like new. Burns no oil. The body is rusted out but no holes like you show in frame. Frame looks fine. In fact, the continuous welds look well done, shinny and new. I look at brand new Toyota Pu's and they have poor quality spot welds and are rusting out as they sit on the Dealership lots. send photo if you like. , Let It Rust, Baby. Let It Rust!!!! The rusted body gives it patina, and when other drivers see it they laugh until you wheel out like a 440 , smoke the tires but blow no smoke from exhaust. , then their jaws drop. Really pisses off people with $55,000 shinny new V-8's pickups , with computers controlling what the engine/trans can or cannot do(hahahahha) when they can't keep up off the line.

I see in the video a rust hole in the frame at 6:37. Do you plan to repair the frame? It looks like some kind of undercoating on the frame that is known to trap salt and moisture.
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 4 жыл бұрын
That was a factory rectangle hole on the side of the frame that originally had one of the plastic plugs over it. The plug tabs became brittle and broke long ago. Over time, the edges of the hole opening have had some rust eat away at the edge. The section of the frame under the cab is all original and I'm probably going to have to repair it eventually, starting with the inside of the frame rail. I need to do a video of the hammer claw test and I'm pretty sure it's going to show a soft/weak spot. The frame has never been sprayed with undercoating because of the problem you described, only POR-15, which is not UV-resistant so it fades and deteriorated over time. When I fix the frame, I'm using a UV Resistant rust inhibitor for sure.

There's an aftermarket one out there, but IMO it doesn't look good. It's really wide and looks out of place, compared to the factory trim. It might be a universal rubber trim that installers are using on these trucks, because the corners don't look quite right either.
