He grew up in a trailer, probably never had anything nice so he learned to make do with fixing up whatever was available. Cory on the other hand grew up in a middle class home in the suburbs so his first reaction is naturally to go "we aren't living here" because in his expereance, that's not what a habitable place looks like.

He grew up having no choice but to make things work. Cory could learn a lot from him

Shawn's trailer wasn't as bad as this apartment

There is nothing bad about growing up in a trailer park, and because most people own their own trailers outright they make their own additions (wrap around porches, huge gardens, built on garage or car port, greenhouses, etc.). My grandmother lived in a huge beautiful trailer that was nicer than most people's houses with a vegetable patch, green house and a kennel/run for her yorkie-poos. She even had whirlpool tubs with built in spa showers. You know what is truly awful? The violent, low income, drug infested wreck that Cory and Topanga's building was made out to be. Having lived in Seattle my whole life I've rented a few. Those kind of decrepit slum buildings are disgusting, full of bugs (bed bugs, ants, cockroaches, silver fish, carpet moths, etc.), lead poisoned water, black mold and the worst of humanity as close neighbors (wife beating, dog kicking, horrible people). I'd pick a trailer that I could own any day over having to pay near a thousand dollars over what my apartment is worth just to avoid living in a place like theirs.. The world is a tough place kiddo, and not anything like you would expect it to be.

There was always emphasis placed on how poor Shawn's family was and how difficult things were for him, with many jokes centered around the theme that Shawn's family was "trailer trash" and that he was from the "wrong" side of town. My response to OP wasn't actually about the show. It was about OP emphasizing the word "trailer" ("[Shawn] grew up in a TRAILER") as if living in a trailer is in itself horrible or somehow worse than living in a bug infested, slum full of violence. OP is relying on a stereotype associated with a type of affordable housing to affirm how much worse Shawn's experiences are compared to Topanga's.

I'm not surprised that Cory and Topanga are complaining, it's a complete shock to their system. But it does show their entitlement. Shawn was right about having to work for things if they want a nice place, but to be fair, I don't think Shawn's trailer was as bad as this awful apartment

i agree with you 100% but another thought runs through my mind on why cory probably didnt want to do it at first the school its self provided those homes and there not even livable from what we can see so did the school give cory the money to fix it up or when they left reimburse cory at the very least because now 1 married couple will get the nice room and the rest what ever youd call the apartment before and cory lost his home but also his money from all that

Personally, I think about the rules of the school. People can't live together in the dorms unless they are married; I realize that those rules do not apply in the apartment, but the fact that Shawn and Angela do not have to follow those rules AND it is a really nice apartment must be really frustrating for Cory. Especially considering how much money it must take to clean up that dorm, and the fact that for just about anyone, looking at a super messy or broken down home and trying to figure out how to fix it can be very overwhelming.

Dad wouldn't help. Cory managed to fix the pipes and went to his dad house to show him. He asked him if he would have helped and his dad said no he wouldn't have helped.

To be fair though, Cory did bring up a valid point. Shawn did luck into the apartment. They both bring up valid points: Cory & Topanga do need to have some pride in what they have, and fix it up together. Yes, Shawn's tough upbringing does justify his viewpoint, but he is incredibly fortunate that he was gifted a quality apartment and essentially free tuition, because of Jack's family. Hell, later in the episode this conversation is what sparks Shawn & Angela to decide to live separately. As the series winds down, Angela rooms with Rachel, while Shawn goes back to living with Jack & Eric in the apartment.

Disney doesn't allow reality. Their shows are racially ambigious utopias where the characters' biggest problems are not being popular or getting rejected by the person they like.

Speaking of Cory and Topanga getting married when they did, I always wondered: a) how could they afford a wedding in college?; b) Assuming their parents paid for it, why would they agree to pay for their wedding when they knew they were too young and should have waited until after college? That has always baffled me!! Plus, since they loved each other so much, why wouldn't they be willing to wait and save up some money? I know it's only a show, but it is based off of experiencing real life, is it not? As Iboog081284 said, Boy....Meets....World.

Topanga and Cory actually were going to have sex before they were married. They got blocked at the last minute. So. The whole point of this arc was that Cory was spoiled, entitled, and used to everything being handed to him because of his upbringing. He needed to grow up. Shawn was right.

Shawn and Angela having sex isn't a point...at all. They are grown adults paying their own bills. That has nothing to do with Cory. If he and Topanga waited then cool but that doesn't make them better people and it doesn't entitle them to nicer stuff.
