My brother served in Vietnam in 1969-70. He trained and qualified with the M14, but just before shipping out he was required to qualify with the M16. When he got to Nam he learned for the first time that as an intelligence officer, he got a 1911, and no rifle. To this day he says if he could have only one gun to protect his family, it would be an M14.

Beautiful gun, but too heavy and expensive compared to modern alternatives. I’d honesty take a Garand over an M14 if we’re talking about historical value.

Thats a pretty interesting take considering the lack of reliability from the m14
@bjs301
@bjs301 4 ай бұрын
@@nuffinpersonal Like I said, he didn't get to carry a rifle while in Nam, but I've talked to other veterans who feel the same. And it was the M16 we used to hear the horror stories about, not the M14. They did fine until they'd been in the field a few days, then they got a little dirty and stopped firing. Both rifles have good reputations for reliability today.
@nuffinpersonal
@nuffinpersonal 4 ай бұрын
@bjs301 yea, at the start the m16 suffered from a lot of politics and sabotage getting in the way, things like improper ammunition causing carbon to excessively build up in the action. But the all of those problems have been fixed not too long after its debut, and Eugene Stoners platform has had decades of use since. I've never heard of anyone choosing the m14 as a home defense over the m16, so I'm just a bit surprised.
@bjs301
@bjs301 4 ай бұрын
@@nuffinpersonal And I'm a bit bewildered. You apparently haven't spent much time around guns. If you had, you'd know people choose a wide range of guns for home defense. I met a guy at the range who still uses his M1 for home defense, and plenty of old timers still use revolvers.

I was issued a M-14 in bootcamp back in 71. I fell in love with it at the rifle range (qualified Expert). I retired back in 2012 and bought a M1A as my retirement gift to myself. I have used it deer hunting, but it's more of a battle/home protection rifle. I have another .308 for hunting. It's not on any "best" list I know of, but my Ruger Gunsite Scout has served me well.

My dad was in the marines in ‘71, but never got to Vietnam. He spoke nothing but praise for the M14. I purchased a Fulton Armory M14 a decade ago, and it is one of my favorite, most reliable rifles to this day. With an 18” barrel and slim stock, it’s super handy and fun to shoot!

I think the PSA 10 is the best choice because they are reliable and just as important they use a lot of AR-15 parts and many aftermarket parts also. This is where the M1A and fal come up short parts have all but dried up and are priced like gold bullion. And I like my M1A.

The biggest problem with the palmetto state armory ar10 is the same problem as all the other ar10’s on the market! They’re all proprietary! Every company makes something on their ar10’s differently from every other companies so that you can’t just interchange parts. That’s why the ar15 is so much more successful than the ar10 on the market! If the companies made all ar10’s to the same standard and design then they would sell a whole lot more as it is at its core a larger ar15 and millions of people already love and own an ar15!

Very ergonomic and easier to field strip for cleaning. The M1A field strip was a PITA pulling out the chanrging handle. The SCAR shoots so much easier and lightet to carry and use, and much shorter so it is not like swinging a flagpole.

Awesome list. Only one I didn’t really agree with & not because of the firearm but really just personal opinion. And that was the Ruger SFAR. And that’s because I personally feel like the Sig 716i is a better rifle if buying an AR-10 style firearm. Yeah the Sig is more expensive. But I feel like Sig built a more robust & readymade AR-10. I’ve heard people say that they had to upgrade the SFAR make it run better. From heavier buffers, adjusting the gas system, & finding the right loads. Not that that’s a bad thing. Personally I don’t mind due diligence. Makes you have a more personal appreciation for a firearm. Kinda like a proud father type feeling. lol 😂. Oh yeah, that B&T APC308 was gorgeous! Maybe one day I’ll own one. Cool video. You should keep these going. Would like to see a PDW, maybe an SBR, or maybe even a handgun video.

Others on the list of course would need to be the H&K MR308 and the IWI Tavor 7. Amazing standard AR-10 configuration and Bullpup configurations, respectively. Piston rod blowback for the MR308 which makes it much better than let's say an AR-10. The best thing about the Tavor 7 is as the 7.62's are heavier, to have the weight on your shoulder instead of on your left arm, makes the Tavor feel much lighter and allows for better shooting from a standing position, short length makes it a great firearm to shoot from vehicles with. The MR308 is best used with a bipod as a DMR. The Tavor uses regular SR25 mags by magpul, where the MR308 has its own proprietary, yet cool, clear mags.

After shooting the STG58, this thing was so light and accurate, super fut to run-n-gun with. This might seem like not a big deal, but it is nice not to have to rock the mags in. Both are complete finicky garbage rods. Psa doesn’t even put the right buffer in theirs and let’s not even go down the bca route. The psa at least is somewhat halfway decent. Bca is on the level of radical. I wouldnt touch whether with a 50 foot pole

Agree with the S&W M&P10. I purchased my 16” version 2 years ago for right around $1,000. It’s definitely a great value. I like my Sig 716i better. But I purchased it for closer to $1,500 last year.

Not wanting to sound critical, and I see this a lot, But at 9:16 the shooter was firing the SCAR with the barrel (itself) laying in the forward firing rest, I believe that will effect accuracy. Better to pull the forward firing rest towards the shooter, and rest the hand guard in that forward firing rest. To help mitigate the harmonics and improve accuracy. The shooter is "bench shooting" just my 2 cents

I've wanted a .308 for a while.. not that I have time to shoot what I have. I've got a lovely IWI Zion-15 SPR that has never had a round through it. I just picked up the Ruger Precision .22 that I haven't gotten to fire yet. The number of scopes I have to dial in is getting daunting. But I would not hate a .308. I was looking at the Springfield but I'd really like the Anniversary Edition.. which seems kinda hard to find. I was also looking at the Tavor 7 at the other end of the spectrum. I'd want to suppress it but I saw someone say that wasn't a great idea because of the gas blowback and it spooked me a bit. It's a lot of money to spend on something if you're not gonna love shooting it.

Everyone keeps saying the M14 were gone by the 80s and so on. Reality is that’s not true we had them up till 2003 on my ship USS PORTLAND LSD37. And many other amphibious ships rocked them till the early 2000s. This is hands down the best rifle in shot in the service. And I shit ALOT

Any budget? Let's throw in some collectables: transferable Valmet M78, Sig AMT, SMG FG42 repro, Sig SG 751. More realistic options: POF Revolution or Rogue, Tavor 7, Zastava M77. What I actually think is the best? SCAR 17S with several hundreds of dollars of upgrade parts. I've seen the APC308 described as everything from SCAR killer to Swiss Kel-Tec.

Hey HEGSHOT87, I'm Bruce and I have a question regarding the RUGER SFAR. I bought one. It's chambered in 308. I have run almost 200 rounds through it so far and It has been malfunctioning by not feeding properly and frequently not picking up a round when I run low grain ammunition like 145gr to 150gr. However, if I run 180gr ammunition in it, it ran flawlessly. So my question to you is, have you heard of any of these problems and am I going to have to run high grain ammunition for this rifle to function properly? I really would appreciate any help you can provide me on this matter. Thank you for your time.

My favorite AR 10 type is the S&W M&P 10, I got mine like 10 or 12 years ago, it has the longer barrel, and the ridiculously long flash hider that I had to take off because they (Flash hiders) are illegal now in the People's Socialist Republik of California. But the Ultradyne .308 muzzle brake is the perfect match. It is crazy accurate and fun to shoot. But as I get older, it's not something I want to lug around all day in the field. For that I like my Ruger Gunsite Scout. I put a traditional scope on it after I got an aftermarket Pic rail (from XS Sightsystems) and I can carry it all day on a sling without breaking a sweat.

I had my M&P10 for about 10 years also. I did some mods like free floated hand guard and a magpul butt stock. I like the look of the flash suppressor. I don’t have to lug mine too far, only to my back yard where I have my own range. I am 70 years old and I am really enjoying life!😊

I have 3 308'sand other rifles. The SCAR is the the king. Low recoil, accurate, balanced and lightweight. The charging handle hasn't been a problem ever. It is highly accurate, and suppresses easily, which is how mine lives. We use suppressor all the time. Use an ACOG for immediate target acquisition, and a red dot on the side for less than 25 yds.

Not trying to bust your chops or anything, but try putting the handguard on the rest instead of the barrel. Resting the barrel on an object messes with harmonics and screws up accuracy.

Good video a couple of errors though. The M-14 in Vietnam was rarely IF EVER issued with the select fire switch. That was at the Commanding Officers discretion. Secondly after it was found that the wood stocks swelled Fiberglass stocks were issued. Finally the M-14 was actually Dropped from first line status in 1964. It was the SHORTEST standard issue Rifle in U.S. History next to the .30/.40 Krag.
