@@JasonIrwinTumblehome I'm still in the "what trips this year" phase of the winter (isn't that dreaming/planning part fun?), but I always make it there at least once a year, sometimes twice. It's home, in a way, and I enjoy revisiting old tucked away spots that I haven't been to in a long time, and trying to find new ones in the delta. So, yes, I will for sure this year. I have mixed feelings about going to see the fire area specifically, but I also feel like I need to.

Tumblehome Did you take precautions for that eventuality, such as a quick fire starting kit? I canoe/camp with my wife and kids in remote area’s of Sweden (sometimes in France but there’s always a town or roadnetwork nearby) and can get a bit overzealous with safety issues. This results in doubling up on lighters, clothing, tarps, food, etc, adding to the overall weight... Better safe than sorry I guess...

Thanks Bob. No doubt there was a foolish element to our adventure. Originally we thought we would have 15 footers and that the water was going to be low (more portaging / lining etc) When we realized we had the bigger boats we briefly debated taking just one, but with neither of us knowing much about the skill level of the other we opted for separate. I think it was probably safer to have two boats so the dry warm guy can start the fire for the cold wet guy :-) We came really close to having a swim... both of us... part 3! I need to take a white water course.
@missinipemagic8951
@missinipemagic8951 5 жыл бұрын
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome, as someone who has taken my share of swims on WW I'm certainly not going to judge your decisions. I think a WW course is a really good idea but certainly one that deals with rescues can never be overestimated. What you wear is also important and a dry suit can also give a lot of confidence as it eliminates the fear of hypothermia.

Yeah we had our own paddles. Our outfitter had told us there were 15's available but all they had were 17's when we arrived :-(. We thought about going tandem but decided we might be safer with two boats in case of a dump in those chilly temps.

@@seattleboatguy I use Media Encoder to get my final file for KZfaq upload (1080p). The only thing I change in the preset is to bump up the bitrate to 30mbps (its usually at 15 for YT presets)

Just wondering why you went with 17' boats? It didn't seem like you had a ton of gear. I own a 17 footer and it wouldn't be my first choice for a solo trip. What am I missing?

Hi Terry, our understanding when we talked to the outfitter was that they had 15' boats as well but when we arrived they only had 17's. Boooo! We briefly entertained the idea of going in one boat (which probably would have been fine) but we opted for two boats for a bit more fun and maybe a bit safer in the even of a dump (one cold wet paddler rather than two). Part of me wishes we had done one boat as we probably would have made it all the way. Live and learn.

@@JasonIrwinTumblehome Just watched Song of the Paddle again . Honestly, I know it was 1977 and there weren't a lot of folks out there doing that at that time, but now it's a bit dated. Like watching the first Star Wars film and comparing to the recent releases. Your videos at 4k, the sound and voice overs (combined with graphics) really make it more watchable. If he had the same tools of 2019, sure it would be better... . Keep doing what you do ... its appreciated. At least until April, then I can get outside again! Winter has been pretty long here and I'm ready for it to be over and warm up! Until then, we're having a Tumblehome film festival!
