A late October solo in Algonquin that felt more like August!
Sights and sounds that we all love from deep into the season.
Definitely one of the best times to visit this beautiful park.

You are a great photographer, but even a better canoeist. On your knees, you are the power and the steering and the brakes. You even pan a few shots with your paddle to combine your two arts. Wonderful. I am so glad to have found your channel.

I just want to extend a sincere 'thank you' for sharing these experiences with myself and others. Even as someone who works in high-tech, I often feel i'm my own enemy by helping to cleave the divide even further between us and the natural world (something I hold to high value). Its people like yourself, Shawn, Attenborough, and the many others who remind us that we share this planet and its ecosystems - its not ours. 4 billion years of history, hardships, and the perseverance of life has given us a true gem, and we should be utmost careful to not cock it up. Thanks Jason.

Thanks and yes, the situation seems dire at times. I find it hard to think about. We are all guilty of complicity to some degree. High tech will have to be part of the answer invariably.

Lovely. First week of October is when we usually get our first snow. Often stays until breakup in the spring. When we were canoeing on the shield in the late 50's and early 60's we never boiled the water except for tea. We all had a cup and reached over the side when we were thirsty. A different experience then. Love your videos.

I just subscribed to your channel from a link from Joe Robinet. I learned to paddle a canoe many years ago and am glad to see that you follow the older gold standard. Kneeling for better stability, and steering the lovely canoe without changing sides every few strokes. You know the strokes for the job. It's a joy to watch. I look forward to seeing many more of your trips. What a beautiful boat and thanks for sharing your family stories.

I put off watching this until I had a day where I needed it. Your videos and editing always deliver. The early morning gravel roads and access points mixed with anticipation - the "it's good to be here/back" sense of arriving after travelling a bit on the first lake on the first day - the serendipity of arriving at places slightly forgotten: all familiar feelings. I lost it at the chili macaroni bit! I enjoyed the personal reflections while portaging. What a gorgeous trip. RIP Gord.

This one felt a little more raw, a little more personal. No less magical so thanks for the work. It was -23 here last week so we may have to wait a little for the ice to go off some of our northern lakes but I can smell it in the air. Spring! Sounds like you had a tough few months back there so I'm hoping things are good now. Thanks for re-fueling my soul.

Yeah, my 2015 trip videos. We did Cedar-Catfish-Burntroot-Hogan-Philip-Radiant-Cedar over 8 days. It was one of my favorite trips that we've done. We hardly saw or heard anyone else, and we definitely had a few lakes to ourselves. You could shorten that loop a few different ways too and have more down time.

My favorite place is Rock lake and the Galeairy Lake dam. There used to be a railway that followed north of Galeairy Lake. You can actually see where the railway went on google maps. My father was on that train when he was a young boy. The train was steam powered. My fathers ashes are spread in Canoe Lake in the park.

Hey.... awesome vid! Really enjoyed it. Did the extract same trip just a couple of months before you shot yours. We were having breakfast there and a mink literally jumped over our feet with a mouse in his mouth! Told my wife you have a new video out ... and she got positively giddy. Love the camera work you do .... but I gotta say it’s hard hearing your wife say every 5 minutes..”he’s a really good looking guy .... isn’t he?” I just nod my head yes ...in the hopes that I can actually hear your audio!! signed The Ugly Camper

Ha Ha. Are you sure your wife is watching Tumblehome vids? Must be Shawn James vids she's talking about! Yeah that mink was a curious little fellow. I figured that the spot I stopped at was possibly where folks would clean fish away from their site, and maybe the mink thought he was going to get.a free meal.

@JasonIrwinTumblehome
@JasonIrwinTumblehome 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I bring a 5ft narrow piece of aluminum with me and mount it a few different ways on the boat. (also a selfie stick!) I have holes in the bow and stern to mount the pole vertically, and I also mount put the pole across the gunnels to get the cam out to the side. Thats the short version ;-) I plan on doing a little vid about it at some point.

Jason, checked in to see what you have been up to and realized I hadn’t seen this video yet. Well done! Also did you build the Carolyn Jane (spelling) and what are her specifications. Making preps to build a canoe and I really like the lines on yours! Happy Holidays!
@JasonIrwinTumblehome
@JasonIrwinTumblehome 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks!. The Carolyn Jane was built by an uncle of mine when he was a lot younger... his first of many kayaks and canoes. He sold it to an American cottager who became ill not long after. It was used two or three times over a 30 yr period... sat under a cottage for all those years. My Uncle bought it back for cheap when the man sold his cottage and he then let me have it for a song!

Hi there. Thanks! Yes the footage on the GP is crisp / sharp (its the H6) I do find that KZfaq compression does horrible things to all my vids! I guess you have to have a certain amount of subs before they let you have higher quality vids :-(

Thank you Sam! I didn't build the boat but it was the first build done by my Uncle. He actually sold it not long after building it and went on to build many more canoes and some kayaks too. As luck had it, I was visiting him at the same time he was re-aquiring the boat from the man he sold it to 35 yrs previous... he didn't need it really but wanted to keep it in the fam so he sold it to me for the same low fee he paid to get it back. The man who bought it all those yrs ago had gotten sick not long after buying it so the boat basically stayed in storage for all those years... the thing looked like it had just been built when I got it!

Where do you buy all your maps for algonquin. Is there somewhere online I can purchase the enlarged versions of booth, Shirley,crotch ect.. I have park maps but would love some enlarged ones of specific areas. Love your videos, has definitely inspired me to get out camping more!

THanks Josh. You can buy topo maps from Ontario Govt. that are a bit more detailed. I sometimes just scan the park maps and zoom in to them and print out sections. Google "Don’t Get Lost: A Guide To Algonquin Park Maps"... good article in Paddling Magazine that talks about options including Jeffs Map / Unlostify etc.

Thanks Richard. Thanks for subbing! I didn't build my cedar strip. It was built by my uncle, his first. He purchased it back from someone he'd sold it to and then he passed it to me. I would like to build one some day though! I just purchased a lightweight solo boat that I'm very happy with... I should have a vid out soon about its maiden adventure.
